Leg 8: Glasgow & LiverpoolChallenge #1: Detour (Glasgow)What is a detour? In these challenges, two themes will be available, and teams will choose to send a song for the one they feel more confident in. Be sure to specify which theme you are sending forDetour Theme: Local Music or Vocal MusicLocal Music: Glasgow Music Festival is one of the UK’s longest-running festivals, celebrating its 108th anniversary earlier this year. Unlike many major music festivals, it focuses on lesser-known artists from all parts of the UK, so for this detour you’ll need to send a song by an artist from a part of the UK other than England (so Wales, Scotland or Northern Island).ORVocal Music: The UK is home to many a cappella groups and competitions, with several of the most successful groups coming from Glasgow. For this detour, you must send a song that’s performed a cappella - without any backing instrumentation.Challenge #2: Roadblock (Liverpool)What is a roadblock? In these challenges, only one member of the team can come up with a song to send. No consulting. You'll be on the honor system here. Send in your group pm who will do this road block. They will then without consulting their teammate see the theme and send the song in individual pms. tl;dr only one person sends a song, pick who that is in the group pms, then and only then they see the theme
Challenge #3: Head to Head (Liverpool)What is a Head to Head? A Head to Head is a brand new twist challenge for season two of the Pulse Amazing Race. The way it works is quite simple: teams compete in head to head matchups to determine the final results. Essentially, teams are first scored based on their performances in the detour and roadblock, and initial placements are made based off of that. Then, teams go head to head with the song they sent for the Head to Head to determine final placements. So team 1 would face team 2, and the winning team would get first, the losing team would face team 3, and so on and so forth. In terms of how the judging works for it, all rotating judges will submit scores, and 3 will be randomly chosen for each match-up. Behind the spoiler is an example of what a Head to Head match-up could look like:
{Spoiler}Team #1 sends Song A, Team #2 sends Song B. Me, Samo & Hamed are randomly chosen as judges. Team #2 gets better scores from the judges, they win the leg. Team #1 then faces Team #3, and Juan Carlos, Geometrical & jamesflame are randomly chosen as judges. Team #1 scores better, and Team #3 goes on to face Team #4, and so on and so forth. Head to Head Theme: Low Lying Most of Liverpool and its surrounding area lie less than 50 metres above sea level, so for this head to head you need to send a song that lies below 50; more specifically, a song that reached the Hot 100, but didn’t peak in the top 50.
Additionally, Web/lyhom & will/Zedd will be getting a Speed Bump (where they can lose up to 6 points) due to being saved by a non-elimination leg last time
Consult with your teammate and get your songs in within 36 hours or else your team will NOT have a song in that category and will get an automatic 0/10. Feel free to ask myself and Nick any and all questions you may have. The world is waiting for you. Travel safe. Go!

Well it's been a lot of fun fighting through the race with willapted33 so far! If this game was based on predictions The Golden Ducks would have surely fought on past this leg. Unfortunately those predictions proved wildly misguided and the ducks quacked under the pressure.
but when some teams must fall.......others rise to take their place...
...on to leg 8! (i'm sorry everyone)

some clarification for the "UK but not England" theme: all solo artists on a song must be from Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland, and any bands must have the majority of their members be from one of those countries.

1. You got a fairly major Youtube music critic to participate as a judge. 2. Those Speed Bump tunes are iconic 3. The head to head ones are pretty solid.
But points off for nobody submitting River by Bishop Briggs.

the first team checking into the head to head is...The Canadian Ducks (willapted33 & matteeeb )Overall Score: 65.4 | Detour Rank: #7 | Roadblock Rank: #1 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0Detour Results:(Local Music)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I like this song. it’s catchy and has some good vibes all around. I don’t think it’s as memorable as the other CHVRCHES song here but it’s still solid (8.5)Samo: While it is the weaker CHVRCHES song here, it’s still very good. There’s just something about the vocals in the verses I don’t really like, because this is otherwise great. The lyrics contrast the more positive instrumental well. (8.4)Sean: As the debut single from CHVRCHES, The Mother We Share instantly establishes them as a very unique presence within the world of synth pop and indie rock. The most notable element of this track is Laure Mayberry’s voice, which cuts through the layers of synth to provide a very delicate throughline for the song to build from, delivering the oblique lyrics about a person trying to help their sibling grow up and move on despite their challenges with beautiful dexterity, portraying the fatigue and sadness without letting it drag down the atmosphere of the song. The synth work is notable in how full the mix is, with different tones jumping it at all different angles in a way that can feel overwhelming, but is clearly all moving in the same direction. The song is a bit too busy and odd for it to become a staple in certain playlists, but the positive elements are easily strong enough to merit a recommendation. (6)bigfan: Again, Chvrches fan, but this might one of their lesser titles in my eyes. The production doesn't do anything - it just stay there, thats why the slight downgrade. (7.5)Overall Score: 30.4Roadblock Results:(Sent by Zedd)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a nice little tune. I enjoy the electronic production and the vocal melodies are quite catchy! it’s not my favorite thing in the world but I still find it to be a quite enjoyable track (8.5)Samo: I wasn't sure about how to score this, since it doesn't fit the theme as well as anything else here, but it's still a very good song, one of the best here. I especially like the synth melody that turns up in each chorus. (8.1)Ty: Simply iconic. Still catchy af after all these years. (10)aerodynamite: A warm, soothing shower that leaves you shivering after (8.5)Overall Score: 35.1Speed Bump Results:Judge's Thoughts:Nick: an absolute jam! this is probably my favorite Abba song, it’s peak pop. no points off! (0)Samo: I heard this (and most of ABBA’s hits) all the time growing up, but this has remained one of my favourites the whole time. Everything about the song is catchy, and it’s barely aged over the last 45 years. (-0.1)Overall Penalty: -0.1and their opponent in the first head to head will be...The Lights (walt91 & Lukas )Overall Score: 65.4 | Detour Rank: #3 | Roadblock Rank: #6 | Bonus From Last Leg: +1.5Detour Results:(Local Music)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: an iconic 80s jam! I feel like this has been in so many films but it also holds up on it’s own. the production is peak 80s and the vocals fit it really well. great track! (9.5)Samo: I hadn’t heard this in full until last year, but I could tell from first listen this was a classic. It’s not something I personally seek out often, but it’s a lot of fun when I do hear it. (9)Sean: As someone who has never seen The Breakfast Club before, I’m in an odd position judging this song, since it’s entire existence is linked to a movie I’m not familiar with and yet I still know the two main riffs of the song my heart purely due to cultural osmosis. Like many songs of the 80s, Simple Minds’ Don’t You Forget About Me hardly even exists as a song, but more as an iconic series of rifts drifting lazily through the aether, and while I did try to be objective and judge the song as a whole, the verse went directly in one ear and out the other as soon as the chorus kicked in. As a vapor of nostalgia for an era before I was born, this song is brilliant, but it never ascends to be more than that vapor. (6)bigfan: What a classic. It was a different change of pace after all these dance songs. This brings me to many memories of great movies. (9)Overall Score: 33.5Roadblock Results:(Sent by Lukas)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I love the production and melodies on this song. the pre-chorus vocal melodies are a bit grating but I love the lower register JT drops into for the chorus, which is completed nicely by him going high again at the end of the chorus. (9.1)Samo: Both "Cry Me A River"s were really good, but I prefer this one slightly. Justin's rarely sounded better, but the production is the real star of the song, being some of Timbaland's best ever work. (7.8)Ty: It's okay but I'm never a huge fan of it. Carried mostly by Timbaland's production. (7.5)aerodynamite: I am not moved to tears, let alone enough to cry an entire river. (6)Overall Score: 30.4Head to Head Results:The Canadian Ducks:Judge's Thoughts:Juan Carlos: I guess there was a team who was aware I was coming back to judge because of this pick. "Fix You" is one of my favourite songs by Coldplay. Hands down. Everything about the song is perfect and I still get chills every time I listen to it and this includes the build up. (9.5)jamesflame: Beautiful song. Not my favorite Coldplay song, but excellent nonetheless (8.5)Hamed: Man, the Coldplay classics still hold up amazingly well after all these years. Clocks, The Scientist, Yellow, this, etc they have all stayed gorgeously beautiful songs. Its truly such a hauntingly beautiful song that still tugs on my cold heartstrings. (10)Overall Score: 28The Lights:Judge's Thoughts:Juan Carlos: It's strange to listen to the original version of "Sugar" because I switched it to the remix featuring Dua Lipa when it came out. Either way, the song is good and I don't have anything against it. (8)
jamesflame: I liked this song a lot more around the time it came out. It has kinda grown off me over time, but still a solid enough song (7.4)
Hamed: So I personally am a fan of the Dua Lipa remix of the song (sorry for the basic pop lover in me coming out), so this version of the song always feels off to me. It's not bad but I don't like the vocal effects used all the time and this version is a lot more noisy. It feels like a bit of a clash going on sonically in this version and I don't really like it anywhere as much as the remix, I only really love the last minute and 30 seconds. (7.4)
Overall Score: 22.8
Result: The Canadian Ducks claim the victory, the first place finish this leg and +1.7 bonus for next leg. The Lights, meanwhile, remain to face another competitor

the next challenger of The Lights is...The Mild Dislikers of Justin Bieber (@matthewlam & tanooki)Overall Score: 64.3 | Detour Rank: #4 | Roadblock Rank: #5 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.2Detour Results:(Local Music)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I grew up on lots of U2 so I’ve got a soft spot for this track. I like all the emotion that’s put into this song. the little guitar riff that plays after each line is also really cool. great song! (9.3)Samo: This is one of my favourite U2 songs. Though I personally prefer Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, this is still very good and I particularly like the guitars in this. (8.6)Sean: It’s very rare that a song is considered one of the greatest of all time without good reason, and as both their biggest and most well-remembered song, U2’s With or Without You is no exception. The primary talent of Bono and crew has always been to project a huge volume of sound with true emotional depth to it, even when the lyrics themselves are simplistic, vague or minimalist, and With Or Without You is no exception. The song’s lyrics are entirely frontloaded, as the relationship is described in simple metaphorical terms as a stony glare here, a stormy ocean to weather there, while the guitars play in huge, yet elegant and gentle strokes in the background. It is only once the lyrics cease, and the instruments are allowed to sing unimpeded, that the true nature of this song can come to fruition, as wails of pure emotion dance in between the soaring echoes of the guitar to create a truly iconic sonic landscape that will be remembered for centuries to come. (10)bigfan: Ughhhh, what to do here. This is obviously a classic, but I've held a grudge against U2 since the autodownloaded album we were all forced to get. It's so sleepy, and I just have never been able to get into it. Sorry. (5.5)Overall Score: 33.4Roadblock Results:(Sent by Matt)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this is a nice chill track. I like how chill the production is, and I think Billie’s voice works really well for this type of song. I remember this song have such a sad chart run, where it peaked super low but spent forever on the charts haha. (8.8)Samo: It's not a bad song at all; I just think Billie has far better, even just on don't smile at me. Billie's vocals fit the song well, but I don't find the song very interesting overall. (7.4)Ty: The song was hot for a minute for me and then it hasn't aged very well. (7)aerodynamite: A flavor packet that doesn't actually affect the taste of the water but doesn't ruin it either (7.5)Overall Score: 30.7Head to Head Results:The Lights:Judge's Thoughts:Samo; A lot of BROCKHAMPTON’s music falls under “I want to like this more than I do” and this is no exception. The guitar line is pretty nice, but I don’t think it meshes particularly well with the rest of the beat. I like the lyrics a lot as well, and the vocal performances are good across the board. (7.6)Nick: I love this song! I’m not totally sure why but everything about it just works kinda perfectly to create a super strong song. not sure how this’ll fair with the other judges but I love it! (9.8)fearlessarrow: So I actually charted this song on my personal chart so I do like it but it didn’t go far which should tell you that I’m not going to give it a super high score. I might’ve liked it at the moment but I never find myself going back to it either - actually the only Brockhampton song that I actively go back to so far is “BOOGIE” (that one slaps HARD). I’m not too big of a fan of the vocals in the chorus either. (7.1)Overall Score: 24.5The Mild Dislikers of Justin Bieber:Judge's Thoughts:Samo: One of Lizzo’s absolute best, and nearly my favourite song here. The production is immaculate, managing to be an excellent throwback while also not sounding remotely dated. Lizzo shows a ton of personality here, and the lyrics are a lot of fun. (9.7)
Nick: a bonafide jam! Lizzo delivers a great vocal performance bursting with personality and the throwback production works super well. superb track! (9.7)
fearlessarrow: Lizzo’s best song for me. I still wish “Truth Hurts” didn’t overlap with this one so “Juice” could’ve been a proper hit. Love the guitars and the funky production here, and it’s just a well-done fun jam! (9.4)
Overall Score: 28.8
Result: Justin Bieber stans everywhere scorn the day as Matt & Tanooki score 2nd place and a +1.2 bonus for next leg. Meanwhile, Ellie Goulding stans are also disappointed as The Lights must face yet another challenger

the next team ready to challenge The Lights is...Sambal Wrap (Sambalada & wrip )Overall Score: 63.9 | Detour Rank: #8 | Roadblock Rank: #2 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.6Detour Results:(Local Music)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: odd lyrics aside this is a cool little track. I like the pop rock esque production and the song is quite catchy as well. pretty cool track! (8.2)Samo: I really like the beat here - it’s high-energy without overpowering Marina. Though, her vocals are probably my least favourite part of the song, so maybe that’s not for the better. The lyrics are alright. (7.8)Sean: This is a rather interesting take on the pop scene of the early 2010s, taking the manic pixie dream girl aesthetic popularized by contemporary offerings from the likes of Katy Perry and Rihanna and giving enough of a twist to them to deliver a darker caricature of the pop princess without losing the sugar-high energy and mass appeal of the image. Marina pains these trappings in a forward, domineering way, which gives the song a sense of confidence and swagger not unique to her, but very well captured by her. The lyrics contain rhyming ideas that I’ve never heard before, and the chorus is supremely catchy. While not a revolution, Bubblegum Bitch is a solid offering that does what it sets out to pretty well. (7)bigfan: WTF are these lyrics? haha I don't know whether to be turned on or terrified. Retro production was ok. (6.5)Overall Score: 29.5Roadblock Results:(Sent by Samb)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I like how tense this track is. you can like feel the anger and bitterness seething out of it, which I think is really cool. I also think the lyrics are quite well written! (8.6)Samo: This is the only song from this set I hadn't even heard of before now, but it was one of my favourite discoveries. Julie sounds good here, and the lyrics are really effective at conveying her strength and independence from this plebeian. (8)Ty: The CMAR that mattered and still matters! (9)aerodynamite: I shed a few tears of joy. Far from a plebeian effort. (8.2)Overall Score: 33.8Head to Head Results:The Lights:Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I love this song! (7.1)Hamed: So I personally am a fan of the Dua Lipa remix of the song (sorry for the basic pop lover in me coming out), so this version of the song always feels off to me. It's not bad but I don't like the vocal effects used all the time and this version is a lot more noisy. It feels like a bit of a clash going on sonically in this version and I don't really like it anywhere as much as the remix, I only really love the last minute and 30 seconds. (7.4)Overall Score: 24.3Sambal Wrap:Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this is a really pretty song. I love the piano playing, and I like the story conveyed in the messages. Lorde is also just a great vocalist. great pick! (9.5)
fearlessarrow: Melodrama is a great album overall so you can’t really go wrong - “Liability” is a piece of really vulnerable songwriting accompanied with a simple but beautiful and almost haunting piano backing. Maybe it’s because I can relate to the feeling of thinking that you’re a “liability” to other people, but the song hits me hard at times and other times I’m just not in the mood for it which isn’t why my score isn’t higher. (8.8)
Hamed: My favorite song on the gloryness that was and still is Melodrama. It's such a gorgeous striped down song that focuses on Lorde's delivery and the lyrics. Those lyrics they are relatable, I honestly relate to this song so much and it just melts me. I need some tissues ya'll. (10)
Overall Score: 28.3
Result: Sambal Wrap would've landed where they did last leg, but an excellent head to head choice puts them ahead of The Lights, and gives them a +1 bonus for next leg. The Lights, unfortunately, must face at least one more team before they're safe

trying to make a comeback after last leg we have...Team Pickles (Web & lyhom)Overall Score: 63.9 | Detour Rank: #6 | Roadblock Rank: #3 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0Detour Results:(Local Music)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: ooh I really like this riff! I think the song puts the riff to good use, and the vocals are nice and energetic. the chorus also really sticks in your head (8.7)Samo: This is really catchy, and I quite like the main guitar riff, but the rest of the song doesn’t do a lot for me. I think it’s something about the vocals, because I do like everything else here. (7.6)Sean: While there’s nothing particularly wrong with Undercover Martyn by Two Door Cinema Club, that’s really only because there isn’t much too it in the first place. The song consists of three choruses alternating with two identical verses, and while the vocal delivery is fine and there are a few catchy guitar loops, there just isn’t a tone of meat on this song’s bones. The lyrics are about the singer’s friend, presumably Martyn, who he is trying to convince to head out into the world and experience new things, but while it is possible to make a connection between the rushing guitar riffs and the thrill of discovery, it’s not a particularly strong connection. This song is above average background music, but background music nonetheless. (5)bigfan: This was so fun! Loved the production; could see myself dancing to it! (9.5)Overall Score: 30.8Roadblock Results:(Sent by Web)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a nice alternative tune. I really like the drums and I think the rest of the melody meshes well with them. the vocals are pleasant and I think the lyrics are super well written! (8.7)Samo: The production and atmosphere created here are great, but I'm ready for the song to end a good 3 minutes before it actually does, which does make it drag on a little, though it's still good. The lyrics are also strong, which helped make this one of the set's better songs overall. (8.2)Ty: It's pretty smooth. (7)aerodynamite: A lovely, entrancing atmosphere that you just wanna soak in (9.5)Overall Score: 33.4Speed Bump Results:Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a total 80s jam, despite some here disagreeing with that sentiment haha. definitely not subtracting any points (0)Samo: It’s an absolute classic and one of the best choices for this theme, even though I don’t quite love it the same way a lot of people here do. These are probably the best lyrics of Michael’s career, and the bassline is fantastic. (-0.3)Overall Penalty: -0.3Head to Head Results:The Lights:Judge's Thoughts:jamesflame: I liked this song a lot more around the time it came out. It has kinda grown off me over time, but still a solid enough song (7.4)Samo: A lot of BROCKHAMPTON’s music falls under “I want to like this more than I do” and this is no exception. The guitar line is pretty nice, but I don’t think it meshes particularly well with the rest of the beat. I like the lyrics a lot as well, and the vocal performances are good across the board. (7.6)Juan Carlos: It's strange to listen to the original version of "Sugar" because I switched it to the remix featuring Dua Lipa when it came out. Either way, the song is good and I don't have anything against it. (8)Overall Score: 23Team Pickles:Judge's Thoughts:jamesflame: Ngl this isn't my favorite QoTSA song but it's still amazing. They have always managed to produce some timeless tracks and this is no exception (9.7)
Samo: It’s an excellent choice, just not one I like as much as most of the other judges. The guitar work is really impressive, and the lyrics are interesting, but I don’t really enjoy the vocals. (7.9)
Juan Carlos: I like this. The sound of the guitars throughout the track are pleasant. (7.8)
Overall Score: 25.4
Result: Team Pickles ace their first head to head appearance and receive a +0.8 bonus next leg, leaving The Lights to face yet another team before they're safe

next up is...;-; (shruggie & DistrictTwelve )Overall Score: 63.1 | Detour Rank: #1 | Roadblock Rank: #8 | Bonus From Last Leg: +1Detour Results: (Local Music)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a total jam! I love the energy this has, with those infectious drums and a very strong guitar. the vocals are also quite strong. overall this is just a great song! (9.1)Samo: It’s a good song all around, but I do prefer the production in the first minute to the rest of the song. I heard this a lot when I was younger, so I don’t know how much my score will be affected by nostalgia, but it’s a fun song nonetheless. (8.2)Sean: As one of the staples of alt rock radio in the 2000s, this is a song that I am intimately familiar with, but even if I weren’t, I believe it would still likely be ranked extremely favorably. Like similar other songs in this contest, Take Me out has a very simple premise: a man approaches a woman at a bar that he has no chance with. Beyond the titular line of “take me out” being a very clever double-entendre, the rest of the lyrics build on this metaphor by comparing his desire to being caught in the crosshairs. However, while the lyrical sentiment is clever and well-thought out, this song’s true appeal comes from the swichup in tone, from a high-intensity, highpassed vocal intro that, through a masterful transition, seamlessly introduces one of the most iconic and wonderful guitar riffs of the 2000s, as the chanting to take him out begins in earnest. The man’s arc has no conclusion, but it doesn’t really need one, as the whirlwind ride of tone and atmosphere this song takes us on in it’s 4 short minutes are more than enough to leave the listener fully satisfied, even after hundreds of listens. (9)bigfan: Yes. Yes. Yes. This song is perfection. Huge sports fan and this makes me think of big sports memories (I would give this more than 10 if possible.) (10)Overall Score: 36.3Roadblock Results:(Sent by Shruggie)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I really like the energy and melody of this song. the vocals aren’t great per se but they’re not too bad either. my only complaint is that at barely over 2 minutes the song feels like it ends before it ever fully begins, which is a shame (8.1)Samo: This...was an interesting choice. I quite like the production, especially the guitar riff in the middle of the song. It certainly stands out in this set, but it's not something I see myself returning to. (7.3)Ty: Knew it from the memes and it's...difficult for me to take this seriously. (2)aerodynamite: Enhanced water that has a peculiar flavor to it but really packs a certain punch you don't find elsewhere (8.4)Overall Score: 25.8Head to Head Results:The Lights:Judge's Thoughts:Juan Carlos: It's strange to listen to the original version of "Sugar" because I switched it to the remix featuring Dua Lipa when it came out. Either way, the song is good and I don't have anything against it. (8)Hamed: So I personally am a fan of the Dua Lipa remix of the song (sorry for the basic pop lover in me coming out), so this version of the song always feels off to me. It's not bad but I don't like the vocal effects used all the time and this version is a lot more noisy. It feels like a bit of a clash going on sonically in this version and I don't really like it anywhere as much as the remix, I only really love the last minute and 30 seconds. (7.4)fearlessarrow: So I actually charted this song on my personal chart so I do like it but it didn’t go far which should tell you that I’m not going to give it a super high score. I might’ve liked it at the moment but I never find myself going back to it either - actually the only Brockhampton song that I actively go back to so far is “BOOGIE” (that one slaps HARD). I’m not too big of a fan of the vocals in the chorus either. (7.1)Overall Score: 22.5;-;:Judge's Thoughts:Juan Carlos: I guess this one of the songs that grow on you after you're not so into it when you listened to it for the first time. The production is cool and very atmospheric at the same time. (7/5)
Hamed: Honestly even after all these years it has aged really well even though I've heard it plenty a time. Still a killer instrumental and the vocal delivery is great here too, but the instrumental is the true star of the show. (9.2)
fearlessarrow: Being a football/soccer fan (Bayern Munich does happen to be a team where this song gets played) I should be more familiar with the song (the riff is iconic so I had heard it before), but I’m not, probably because I tried listening to this years ago and it didn’t particularly appeal to me. Now that my music taste has expanded, I can appreciate this song more. Outside of the riff this song doesn’t do a whole lot for me (which is the difference between this one and “No One Knows” for me as far as this round goes), but the riff is so iconic that it’s enough to carry the whole song for me. (7.9)
Overall Score: 24.6
Result: ;-; won't by crying today as they get 5th and a +0.6 bonus for next leg. The Lights, meanwhile, must face yet another competitor
