the next team to challenge The Lights is...Latino Gang š (MoD & Leo ā)Overall Score: 61.9 | Detour Rank: #5 | Roadblock Rank: #4 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.4Detour Results:(Local Music)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a great song! the guitars are really complex and also quite strong and catchy. I like how low key the vocals are in the chorus, and then how the singer lets loose a little more in the chorus. the build up into the chorus is also great! (9.3)Samo: Yes! I was hoping someone would send Stereophonics, and Dakota might be my favourite song from them. The guitars are beautiful, but the electronic sound that runs through the song helps it still feel energetic and danceable. (9.5)Sean: To paraphrase the eternal words of a certain yellow sponge,āthe best time to listen to a U2 throwback is all the time,ā and thus, here we are. Dakota, the only #1 hit from Welsh alt rock band Stereophonics, isnāt a particularly deep song. Itās a straightforward love song about a woman, presumably named Dakota, who made the narrator feel special and loved during the days of their youth when they were both growing up and every experience in love was new and magical. Itās a premise as old as time, and the Stereophonics do a pretty good take on it, with the signature U2-esque style of electric guitars that both chug and soar to make this childhood romance feel like the most important experience in the world. As far as breaking new ground goes, it didnāt go far, but it didnāt need to go far. (7)bigfan: Really liked the production, but the vocals were so rough to me. What were they even saying in the chorus? Idk. Probably my least favorite in this batch. (5)Overall Score: 61.9Roadblock Results:(Sent by Leo)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a gorgeous little song. the lyrics are fantastic, and the piano playing is incredibly skillful and quite wonderful. I also just love the vocals on all Simon & Garfunkel songs haha, which certainly holds true here (9.6)Samo: Sometimes I have a hard time deciding on my favourite song in a set, but that is not the case this time. I'd never actually heard this one one in full before, but it's absolutely beautiful. The lyrics aren't amazingly complex, but they don't need to be, and fit the song perfectly. (9.8)Ty: (falls asleep) Next! (3.5)aerodynamite: Everything flows like a stream well enough that I have no trouble giving this a good score. (7.8)Overall Score: 30.7Head to Head Results:The Lights:Judge's Thoughts:Samo: A lot of BROCKHAMPTONās music falls under āI want to like this more than I doā and this is no exception. The guitar line is pretty nice, but I donāt think it meshes particularly well with the rest of the beat. I like the lyrics a lot as well, and the vocal performances are good across the board. (7.6)Nick: I love this song! Iām not totally sure why but everything about it just works kinda perfectly to create a super strong song. not sure how thisāll fair with the other judges but I love it! (9.8)jamesflame: I liked this song a lot more around the time it came out. It has kinda grown off me over time, but still a solid enough song (7.4)Overall Score: 24.8Latino Gang š:Judge's Thoughts:Samo: The narratorās perspective here is really interesting, especially for a song that hit the Hot 100. The chorus is really catchy, and the guitar riff is pretty good too. Iām not a big fan of the vocals, but I like the rest of the song a lot. (7.7)
Nick: I love this production. the best has such wonderful energy to it. the vocals fit the song really well Iād say. the chorus isnāt as strong as the verses but I still really like the song! (8.8)
jamesflame: Such an upbeat song even with slightly downbeat lyrics. Another song that kinda grew off me over time but still great. (7.7)
Overall Score: 24.2
Result: The Lights finally manage to pull out a win, claiming 6th place and a +0.4 bonus. Latino Gang š, meanwhile, must face a second challenger soon

facing the Latino Gang š is...Dylo (Mylo13 š & Daryl the Beryl )Overall Score: 59.5 | Detour Rank: #9 | Roadblock Rank: #7 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0Detour Results:(Local Music)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: first of all I really donāt like that band name haha. that said the song itself is pretty good. itās got some nice rock esque energy to it, and I like the instrumental. (8.3)Samo: The instrumental has some great energy, but it gets kind of boring until it reaches the bridge. I also donāt really like the vocals here, but they do fit the beat well. (7.6)Sean: After I take the obligatory moment to congratulate these fine blokes for selecting the single greatest band name in the history of anything ever, I will be forced to admit that I was sincerely hoping for something more interesting from a band with that name. The best way I can describe Quiet Little Voices is an enjoyable indie rock song that Iām not going to remember listening to by tomorrow. Simply put, this is a song with no surprises in it. Once youāve listened to the first thirty seconds of the song, you know exactly what youāre getting, and besides the production slightly intensifying (my which I mean adding more layers of guitars), there really is nothing else added into the mix. Itās a solid foundation, but hardly anything has been built from it, and that is truly disappointing. (5)bigfan: Liked the production on this. The vocals left a little to be desired, but I liked it overall. (8.5)Overall Score: 29.4Roadblock Results:(Sent by Mylo)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I enjoyed this one. I didnāt think the vocals were great but I really dug the production. apparently Eskimo Joeās is also a restaurant, wonder which came first, the band or the restaurant (8.0)Samo: It's an alright song, but not very memorable. The production is nice enough, but not particularly interesting either, at least to me. I don't have much else to say about this; it's not a bad choice, but it doesn't give me a lot to say about it. (6.8)Ty: Cute song. I knew nothing about the band. A radio filler that I won't skip. (7)aerodynamite: That feeling after you dive into a pool when you emerge from the water and you're momentarily disoriented but it's that odd sensation that really makes the experience feel complete (8.3)Overall Score: 30.1Head to Head Results:Latino Gang š:Judge's Thoughts:Hamed: Passion Pit is another band that I really should listen to more. I do know this song and I really like it though I have not heard it in quite a long time so this really is a great moment to re familiarize with it. (8.9)Samo: The narratorās perspective here is really interesting, especially for a song that hit the Hot 100. The chorus is really catchy, and the guitar riff is pretty good too. Iām not a big fan of the vocals, but I like the rest of the song a lot. (7.7)fearlessarrow: First of all, I find the lyrics to be pretty interesting in this one - the first verse talks about the experience of families that immigrated to the US and the second verse onwards is the narratorās life falling apart due to a financial crisis. I donāt think itās a common theme for a Hot 100 hit. And then I really like the guitar riff that appears throughout the song - that makes the song more memorable to me. (8.4)Overall Score: 24.3Dylo:Judge's Thoughts:Hamed: I've actually never listened to a single Depeche Mode song. This is making me now consider fixing that, I really love this. It's a really well written song with personal feelings attached that is brilliantly accompanied by am incredible delivery and production. (9.5)
Samo: So...this is actually quite good, and this is coming from someone who thinks Depeche Mode are extremely overrated. The combination of guitar and synths in the production sounds really good, and while I donāt think Iāll ever fully like John Depecheās vocals, I donāt mind them as much as I normally do. (6.8)
fearlessarrow: I had only listened to my first Depeche Mode song this year (āEnjoy the Silenceā) and I loved it so I was looking forward to this one. Aaaaand this one didnāt disappoint! Iāve used the term āpulsing synthsā to describe songs I enjoy before (Taylor Swiftās āStyleā, Georgiaās āAbout Work the Dancefloorā from MM etc.) and this applies here too and I like the overall dark vibes this song gives out too. (9)
Overall Score: 26.3
Result: Dylo secures their spot in 7th for the third straight leg, and also earns a +0.2 bonus for next leg. Latino Gang š, meanwhile, will face Fire & Desire to determine who is eliminated

challenging Latino Gang š for the last spot in the final 8 is...Fire & Desire (Fire & ry4n)Overall Score: 55.8 | Detour Rank: #2 | Roadblock Rank: #9 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.8Detour Results:(Local Music)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I donāt know a ton of CHVRCHESā music but Iād say this is the best song Iāve heard from them. itās got some very pleasant melodies and I like the different sorts of instruments used in the production. (8.9)Samo: Idk how unpopular this will be, but this is definitely my favourite CHVRCHES song in this set. The production is beautiful, and the build to Lauren shouting "will you meet me more than halfway thereā is fantastic. The rest of the song isnāt quite as good, which did bring my score down a little. (9.1)Sean: This song is a master class in synth pop. Like much modern dance music, this song builds to an ultimate drop, but rather than using the drop as a substitute for the chorus, the entire piece builds to the drop, slowly adding in new production elements as it builds, all of which are pristinely clear and beautiful. Lauren Mayberryās vocals have a similar pristine clarity to the production, and the entire composition brings to mind a beautiful, clear day of with a perfectly blue sky, as Iām sure was intended by the title. This song is a joyride of pure airy synth pop bliss that I can see being seen as a staple of summer music when inevitable ends up as the breakout highlight of a soundtrack sometime in the near future. (9)bigfan: Okay, I'm a Chvrches fan - so this was a great choice, but I kept waiting for the big drop beat, and when i got there - it was a little disappointing. (8)Overall Score: 35Roadblock Results:(Sent by Fire)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: Iāve never been particularly fond of this song. it just kinda feels like a product and is thoroughly lacking in personality. I remember being so excited when I saw Avril dropped a new song like a year and a half ago...and then it was this. (5.1)Samo: I can see why some people aren't huge fans of this, but I actually really enjoy it. Avril sounds great for the most part, and production is good enough, though the drums are sometimes overpowering. (8.4)Ty: Not a fan of the songwriting nor the vocal performance. You can do better, girl! (3)aerodynamite: It's easy to stay afloat when it's watered down. (3.5)Overall Score: 20Head to Head Results: Latino Gang š: Judge's Thoughts:Juan Carlos: Michael Angelakos! I got into Passion Pit because of Pulse and "Take A Walk" is great. (9.3)fearlessarrow: First of all, I find the lyrics to be pretty interesting in this one - the first verse talks about the experience of families that immigrated to the US and the second verse onwards is the narratorās life falling apart due to a financial crisis. I donāt think itās a common theme for a Hot 100 hit. And then I really like the guitar riff that appears throughout the song - that makes the song more memorable to me. (8.4)Nick: I love this production. the best has such wonderful energy to it. the vocals fit the song really well Iād say. the chorus isnāt as strong as the verses but I still really like the song! (8.8)Overall Score: 26.5Fire & Desire: Judge's Thoughts:Juan Carlos: Contrary to what some people could think, I haven't been a huge fan of "Hideaway". The deep house production is great and the track itself is cool, but there's something I still can't get into it. (7.2)
fearlessarrow: I am so sorry to whoever sent this but I never really cared for this song even when it was on the charts. I donāt know, I guess Iām just not particularly a fan of just vocals on sparse EDM-type production (here itās just a bass and percussion - maybe a more interesting production in the verses wouldāve made me like the song more). The āooh, ahās arenāt really helping the cause here as I just find it to be unnecessary. (6.2)
Nick: this one does nothing for me. it feels very generic and unmemorable to me. itās not the worst thing ever by any means, but I don't really enjoy it much either. (5.5)
Overall Score: 18.9
Result: Latino Gang š claim 8th place, while Fire & Desire unfortunately fall in last, and I regret to tell you two that you have been eliminated from the race. thanks for playing!

Leg 9: Brussels & AmsterdamChallenge #1: Roadblock (Brussels)What is a roadblock? In these challenges, only one member of the team can come up with a song to send. No consulting. You'll be on the honor system here. Send in your group pm who will do this road block. They will then without consulting their teammate see the theme and send the song in individual pms. tl;dr only one person sends a song, pick who that is in the group pms, then and only then they see the theme Challenge #2: Special Roadblock (Brussels)What is a special roadblock? It's like a roadblock but the goal is to send the worst song possible. The scoring is reversed (a 1/10 becomes a 9/10). The team member that doesn't do the regular roadblock has to take the special roadblockChallenge #3: Detour (Amsterdam)What is a detour? In these challenges, two themes will be available, and teams will choose to send a song for the one they feel more confident in. Be sure to specify which theme you are sending for Detour Theme: Cat Show or Van Gogh Cat Show: In Amsterdam, there is a boat full of abandoned or homeless cats that floats around the canals called the Cat Boat. Such a unique sight has logically become a tourist attraction. For this detour, you must send a song named after an animal. OR Van Gogh: Amsterdam is home to the famous Van Gogh Museum - probably the most visited museum in all of the Netherlands. Van Gogh as a painter was famous for his use of colors. For this detour, you must send a song with a color in the title.
Consult with your teammate and get your songs in within 36 hours or else your team will NOT have a song in that category and will get an automatic 0/10. Feel free to ask myself and Samo any and all questions you may have. The world is waiting for you. Travel safe. Go!

Roadblock Results:(Sent by Lukas)Samo:Ā Both "Cry Me A River"s were really good, but I prefer this one slightly. Justin's rarely sounded better, but the production is the real star of the song, being some of Timbaland's best ever work. (7.8) Roadblock Results:(Sent by Samb)Judge's Thoughts:Samo: This is the only song from this set I hadn't even heard of before now, but it was one of my favourite discoveries. Julie sounds good here, and the lyrics are really effective at conveying her strength and independence from this plebeian. (8)

Leg 9 Songs:Challenge #1: Roadblock (Brussels)Roadblock Theme: Miniature LivingDespite Brussels being by far the biggest city in Belgium both based on population and area, it is actually quite small when compared to other European cities. For this roadblock, you must send a similarly āsmallā song, namely one that has less than 1 million streams on Spotify. Songs:Boldy James/The Alchemist/Benny the Butcher - Scrape the BowlBottin/Steve Strange - Poison WithinJessie Ware - Soul ControlJPEGMAFIA - CUTIE PIE!Kate Bush - Night of the SwallowLaura Nyro - Eli's Comin'The Pesos - CumdownUrban Cone - Comfort Meand joining us to judge this challenge is Spectrum Pulse & Geometrical
Challenge #2: Special Roadblock (Brussels)Special Roadblock Theme: Imperfect WeatherThe weather in Brussels often goes from sunny and ideal to rainy and cloudy in just a few minutes. For this special roadblock, you must send a song that, despite being at least somewhat well liked and popular when it first came out, is now commonly regarded as being a bad song (remember the goal of a special roadblock is to send the worst song possible, and scoring for it will be reversed [1/10->9/10]).Songs:Custom - Hey Mister*Daniel Powter - Bad DayLimp Bizkit - NookieMeghan Trainor - All About That BassRobin Thicke/T.I./Pharell - Blurred LinesTrain - Play That SongTrapt - HeadstrongYlvis - The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)and joining us to judge this challenge is CagedJuggalo The Third Tanker & woods *not on Spotify, www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOEtZSqUSLoChallenge #3: Detour (Amsterdam)Cat Show:Florence + the Machine - Dog Days Are OverVan Gogh:Amy Winehouse - Back to BlackColdplay - YellowElectric Light Orchestra - Mr. Blue SkyElton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick RoadJorja Smith - Blue LightsMy Chemical Romance - Welcome to the Black ParadeRic Wilson/Jia Lih/Sam Veren - Yellowbrickand joining us to judge this challenge is Rose "Payola" Nylund & ry4n

We may run out of music critics on YouTube to rate these songs soon.
For the special roadblock, um, I still like All About That Bass. Don't at me.
The Detour songs look particularly strong.

here's our exit interview with Fire & ry4n
how do you feel about your time in the race?
Fire: i went further than i thought i did. but i just feel so bad for ry4n, i completely screwed us over, he deserved better. ah well, it was fun being his teammate and i wish the rest of y'all the best of luck!
ry4n: Honestly pretty proud of myself. Some of my picks actually scored pretty highly! I know Fire is blaming himself for this loss, but I could've vetoed Hideaway for being too polarizing. There's no hard feelings. I enjoyed my time playing this!
do you think you could've/should've done anything different?
Fire: should've asked APM for the cheater's playbook, then we would've won lol. but in all seriousness, i should've done a better job at reading the judges, as i sent songs i thought were loved or well-liked by the judges but they weren't.
ry4n: Spend more time researching songs.
any predictions?
Fire: idk tbh. like you could have the best average position like we did but then still get eliminated from one mistake. nonetheless i'm predicting matt and nooks take this home.
ry4n: Not really, but I'm rooting for a select few.

bouncing back for their second win of the season we have...1. The Lights (walt91 & Lukas)Overall Score: 98 | Roadblock Rank: #8 | Special Roadblock Rank: #1 | Detour Rank: #1Roadblock Results:(Sent by Lukas)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I donāt like the vocals here, but I think the effects on them are really cool. I also quite enjoy the instrumental. the track itās definitely a mixed bag for me, but I think the good out-ways the bad, though itās still not really something I see myself returning to (7)Samo: The vocals are...not my favourite, but I quite like the relaxed atmosphere of the song in spite of the sadder lyrics. I also really like the production, aside from the background vocals towards the end of the song. (7.1)Geometrical: The vocals were kind of accessory to the great jangly guitar that guided you throughout the song. (7.5)Spectrum Pulse: rickety lo-fi so obviously indebted to the 90s with touches of country and flagrant Mac DeMarco worship that I almost didn't notice the leaden slacker delivery and content. Not impressed. (5)Overall Score: 26.6Special Roadblock Results:(Sent by Walt)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: f**k this song lmao. the YouTube comments are weirdly positive towards it which ??? I was planning to deduct points for people never really liking it but those youtube comments proved me wrong so congrats youāre getting full credit for forcing me to listen to this awful awful f**king song (0.1)Samo: One of my least favourite songs Iāve ever heard, no exaggeration. The lyrics are disgusting, and I canāt believe this was a hit in any capacity. Knowing that there are people who still enjoy this genuinely scares me. (0)Juggalo: Starting off with a doozy here folks. The song itself is nothing too special, dude is an asshole/prankster for no reason (I mean, you're already screwing her, you already won), and there's the "it's all a spoof" final verse which does get on my nerves, but the song itself is par for the course when it comes to "Teenage Rock". (5)woods: (3)Overall Score: 8.1 -> 31.9Detour Results:(Van Gogh)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a wonderful song. the production is really great, I always really dig the melodies and production on Winehouse tracks. I also really love Amy Winehouseās voice, especially on this song! (9.5)
Samo: I remember this being the first song I ever had to judge back in LS1, and itās just as excellent now. Like with Rehab, itās only more powerful hearing it after Amyās passing, but does a fantastic job creating a hopeless, haunting atmosphere nonetheless. (9.6)
Max: Jumping into Back To Black today is particularly bittersweet on the ninth anniversary of Amy's passing (yes, I am late doing the judging). It's hard to choose my favourite song by her but this one is one I'd never not consider. (10)
ry4n: Haunting and beautiful. A true work of art. The orchestral instrumentation perfectly creates the dark depressing mood. The bridge where everything stops and Amy says "baaack" is powerful. BTB is even more poignant after Amy's untimely death. (10)
Overall Score: 39.1
congrats on scoring another leg win, and especially congrats on sending the best scoring song of the whole season so far in "Back to Black". you two will get a +1.5 bonus next leg

continuing their run of top 2 finishes we have...2. The Mild Dislikers of Justin Bieber (@matthewlam & tanooki )Overall Score: 93.4 | Roadblock Rank: #5 | Special Roadblock Rank: #5 | Detour Rank: #2Roadblock Results:(Sent by Matt)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a very tense track, but I think it really works. the flows are very strong and I also dig the lyrics a lot. itās a really good song! (8.4)Samo: The beat stands out here, but I still really like the lyrics, and the vocals arenāt bad either. Itās enjoyable, just not something I see myself returning to often. (7.9)Geometrical: Solid, haunting piano beat, which creates a superb dark atmosphere throughout the track. I kinda wish the track progressed a bit more at one point to give it full marks, but I still very much enjoyed this. (8.6)Spectrum Pulse: ominous twinkles lead to a stalking, haunted cut on a bloody drug-running cut, accentuated by the fractured sample that ends out the song. Routinely solid, if not exceptional. (7)Overall Score: 31.9Special Roadblock Results:(Sent by Tanooki)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a pretty obnoxious track. itās abrasive in all the wrong ways, and it really drags as the track goes on. I donāt get why anyone would actually want to listen to this and make it popular lol (2.1)Samo: I donāt hate this, though itās at least a minute longer than it needs to be, and really wears out its welcome. After a while, it just gives me a headache, making it pretty unpleasant overall. (3.1)Juggalo: Wow. The fact that this song is here just kinda screams "YOOO JUG, YOU OLD AND YOUR TASTE IS OLD" š. Its still a hype song, the chorus is perfection (I don't know anyone who hasn't shouted BACK OFF when it came on), and I still love revisiting it. (9)woods: (3)Overall Score: 17.2 -> 22.8Detour Results:(Van Gogh)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: oops Iāve never loved this song like some people seem to. I like the faster, more guitar driven parts, but the more piano based parts donāt do too much for me. with that said the middle part of the song is pretty fantastic (8.7)
Samo: This has burned on me slightly recently, but itās still a fantastic song thatās really overhated. The key change is fantastic, and fits in the song perfectly. MCR are a band I usually have a hard time liking, but this is fantastic. (9.8)
Max: Welcome to the Black Parade is among my favourite songs of the last decade so aces for that. (10)
ry4n: One of those songs that everyone at my junior high school was obsessed with. I do think it's a well-composed song though. Particularly, the build up in the heavy/distraught intro, which transitions into the more āenergeticā portion. But then it gets a little annoying towards the end. (9)
Overall Score: 37.5
consistency is key at this point in the race, so congratulations on remaining in the top 2! you two will get a +1 bonus next leg
