Not that I’m particularly fond of the CMAs at this point, but a few thoughts... -Cool to see 2 women in EOTY. Gross to see how long it’s been since the last time it happened. Miranda Lambert deserves the win in this category (Maren Morris rightfully deserves it altogether, though); Luke Combs will probably get it. Ho hum. -Feel awful for Kelsea Ballerini. She’s gotta get off of Black River if she ever wants a fighting chance at these awards. -I genuinely do not get the global fawning over Luke Combs. -A New Artist category without Mickey Guyton nominated (and winning) carries *zero* weight to me. Eff that. -Maren and “The Bones” deserve to win everything she can, but I fear that Miranda will end up sweeping her, as they’re in direct competition.

This is how you express (valid) disappointment. Dustin Lynch is shaking... She really got snubbed. But I will say I'm not sure where she should've snuck in. She would've been the weak link in Female, Album...

I still do not see why Mickey Guyton would be nominated let alone win for New Artist when she had a pretty ho hum year, as even though she released 3 new songs none of said songs besides "Black Like Me" really had any long lasting impact whatsoever after being released. Meanwhile Morgan Wallen is one of the biggest stars in the genre, all 3 of the ladies that are nominated had singles that hit the Top 30 on the Hot 100 and Jimmie Allen had a radio #1 and released a huge collaboration EP.

As much as I like Kelsea Ballerini, all the women that got nominated except for Kacey Musgraves are more deserving for female vocalist than her. I would’ve even thrown Carly Pearce in the mix over Kelsea. When Kelsea decides to get over her pop music kick she’s gonna get nominated. I fully believe she would be dominant like Taylor Swift if she’d go pop. I agree with raylatch98 everyone in the new artist category is more than deserving than Mickey Guyton. The only person I might have put in the category that wasn’t is Cody Johnson. As I stated in a previous post the CMA’s tend to like the more traditional sounding country singers. Morgan to me is the easy pick to win New Artist but I have a feeling the voters will vote for Ingrid.

Critical acclaim for three of the boldest singles released this year by any country artist, and it would be very nice to see black women appreciated for once. Has a black country female ever been nominated for a CMA? I’m genuinely not sure.

Just a curious question but when was the last time a male won entertainer and male vocalist in the same year? I’m gonna guess it was Blake about 4-5 years ago. If not who was it?

Now I do think the way the country music industry by in large has treated her has been pretty shitty and has made her chance of making an impact handicapped very much apparent but critical acclaim can only take you so far especially when all the nominees sans maybe Jimmie Allen have some level of critical acclaim (not as much as she does but still a solid amount). Also I feel like with the nominations of an Award show you want some level of familiar names and if you ask 100 country music fans if they had heard of anyone of Jimmie Allen, Ingrid Andress, Gabby Barrett, Carly Pearce, and/or Morgan Wallen or if they had heard of Mickey Guyton I feel like more people would say any of those 5. I hope I am making sense here and you understand my point of view on this.

Happy about: The amount of women nominated. Great seeing Carrie AND Miranda for Entertainer! Also love all the female representation in the Song category in particular, though I worry that it being 4 female songs vs 1 male song will cause Luke Combs to win due to vote-splitting, which would be a shame considering how great it is to have so many females nominated and "Even Though I'm Leaving" is the weakest song of the set imo. Love that so many women are nominated tho and I think there's a good chance that several women will walk away with wins (Miranda and Carly being the likeliest). Not as happy about: Kelsea Ballerini being snubbed. Poor girl can't catch a break. She should've definitely been in Female Vocalist over Kacey Musgraves who shouldn't have been nominated this year for anything imo. Also Chris Stapleton for Male Vocalist when he literally did nothing is equally troublesome, especially since the male category has even more viable options than the female does. My picksEntertainer: Carrie Underwood **(should've had it last year so... make it right CMAs!) Female: Maren Morris Male: Luke Combs Duo: Maddie & Tae **(pipe dream, I know...) Group: Little Big Town Album: Wildcard **(wouldn't be upset by an Ashley McBryde win either tho) Single: "I Hope" /or/ "The Bones" Song: "Bluebird" Musical Event: "I Hope You're Happy Now" /or/ "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" **(would be pretty cool to see 6 women get a CMA off one song tbh) Music Video: "Bluebird" Musician: Jenee Fleenor I still do not see why Mickey Guyton would be nominated let alone win for New Artist when she had a pretty ho hum year, as even though she released 3 new songs none of said songs besides "Black Like Me" really had any long lasting impact whatsoever after being released. Meanwhile Morgan Wallen is one of the biggest stars in the genre, all 3 of the ladies that are nominated had singles that hit the Top 30 on the Hot 100 and Jimmie Allen had a radio #1 and released a huge collaboration EP. Commercial success is not the only thing that matters. I agree and I would've loved to see her shown some love as well. That said, the only artist who was nominated whose spot I could've seen being replaced by her is Jimmie Allen's as the other 4 made pretty huge impacts both commercially and critically. Swapping out the only new black male artist with radio success to put Mickey Guyton isn't exactly much better. I think he's rather mediocre and she's anything but, but 4 females in that category would've been a pretty big stretch especially when they already nominated 3, which is 1 or 2 more than we normally get. I wanna see her win too, but I think the label is still slowly building her up and maybe next year will be her moment, who knows.

I hope I am making sense here and you understand my point of view on this. Totally understand your point and yes, you're making perfect sense. I'd like to think both sides of this argument are valid! The issue for me, ultimately, is the system, and it's the square responsibility of the CMAs and their voting body to help change it. I understand Mickey Guyton didn't have a top ten hit or a platinum single or whatever. But her race is something that actively factors into why she isn't achieving any of that, which is bad. (And yes, that's on country radio [along with a million other things lol], streaming services, etc. to better support country artists of color.) So in a year where we saw her surge in the limelight (no, not as much as we saw Gabby Barrett or Ingrid Andress surge, I get that) with three very topical releases -- far bolder and edgier of releases than any of her counterparts put out, A-list or D-list -- and in a year where the international fight for racial equity and justice for Black communities has become the topic of conversation (+ the at-home Lady A/Lady A nightmare), I hoped the CMAs would've taken this opportunity to take a step forward themselves. Making Instagram posts about Juneteenth and black squares on June 2, to show that the association is actively trying to improve themselves and how they want to succeed in longterm fights against systemic racism, is nice; nominating a very deserving black woman (who made the showcase round of voting for this category!) would've been an actual statement.

I agree with a lot of this, except Miranda for EOTY. As you pointed out Maren should be in this category instead. Carrie also had a successful fall tour. Bluebird was a big success for Miranda, but her tour numbers have been falling for several years now. I want women to be nominated and win, but not just to say we had a woman winning. There are other women who were more deserving (and other men). I have my fingers crossed that Carrie finally wins, Eric got totally snubbed last year, but I suspect it will be Luke Combs.

the CMA's have nominated artist for critical acclaim and minimal radio success before for New Artist. Doesn't happen often but it has happened so it is not out of the realm of possibility that Mickey Guyton would be considered and she was as she made it to the showcase round of voting. I definitely would have liked to have seen her get the nomination but who would she have knocked out of the nominations? I personally feel like all 5 nominees are deserving.
My thoughts on the nominees and who I'd like to see win:
ENTERTAINER: I want Miranda, Carrie, or Eric to win this. Please don't give it to Luke or Keith. Eric Church DESERVES this award eventually and it would be a shame if he never did. The same can be said for both Miranda and Carrie. So as long as one of those 3 wins I'll be happy
FEMALE VOCALIST: I want Ashley McBryde to win because I just feel like what she brings to the table is a lot more unique than any of the other nominees. That being said I think she is 4th likely, with only Kacey having less of a chance of winning. I think it'll be between Miranda, Maren, and Carrie. I think it SHOULD be Maren that takes it because she has been everywhere lately and deserves that recognition
MALE VOCALIST: Where is Dierks Bentley? and why is Chris Stapleton nominated. Let's take that a step further, why is Keith Urban nominated? I feel like in the past year even Luke Bryan has achieved more than Keith and Chris, nevermind Blake Shelton, Sam Hunt, Jake Owen, Scotty McCreery, or Jon Pardi.
Regardless I think that this is Luke Combs' to lose. I'd like to see Eric Church win it but I doubt that happens.
VOCAL GROUP
I feel like this is Old Dominions once again, unless the CMA's deside to give it to Rascal Flatts for retiring but I think giving them the nomination is as much as they are getting. I'd prefer to see Lady A take it since "What If I Never Get Over You" was such a hit but they've stumbled since so I doubt they get it
VOCAL DUO I want either Brothers Osborne or Maddie & Tae to win this but it'll likely be a snoozefest with Dan + Shay winning
NEW ARTIST Personally rooting for Carly Pearce because she hasn't released anything I haven't enjoyed. That being said she is against Morgan Wallen here and I doubt he loses this
ALBUM Super stoked to see Ashley McBryde be nominated here and I would absolutely LOVE to see her win this. While Wildcard is a great album, Miranda has won this award so many times and I don't agree with the sentiment that this album is as good as most of the albums she has won for in the past. For that reason I don't want her to win. I do think it'll be between Miranda or Luke Combs but I could see Jon Pardi sneaking a win because his album was highly acclaimed. That being said I WANT Ashley to win!
SINGLE Seeing Justin Bieber be nominated for Single of the Year is disgusting, especially with the trash that is "10,000 Hours". Rooting for "I Hope" or "Bluebird" to win but I think it'll be "The Bones" or "Beer Never Broke My Heart"
SONG "Die From A Broken Heart" should have been nominated here. That said I am rooting for either "More Hearts Than Mine", "I Hope You're Happy Now", or "Bluebird" to win. Please don't give this award to "The Bones" as that is my least favorite song here. "Even Though I'm Leaving" would be a good winner too, as that song is incredible. I do ultimately think this is Miranda's this year
MUSICAL EVENT I've never been more upset with a nomination that I am with Maren's duet with Hozier being nominated here. ESPECIALLY when it was never released to the Country format, in fact it was specifically for the Pop format. There were quite a few duets this year that were far more deserving: Blake and Gwen, Garth and Blake, hell I'd even take Danielle Bradbery and Parker McCollum's version of "Shallow" over that. Oh and cannot forget Hot Country Knights featuring Terri Clark. "The Bones" should not have been nominated here
Now that I've finished my rant about that being nominated onto the other four. I want "I Hope You're Happy Now" to win because that is my personal favorite of the nominees. I think it'll end up going to either "10,000 Hours" or "Be A Light" though. Also I could see "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" winning because of it being all female artist and that seems to be a big push in the nominations so maybe that'll translate over to the wins. Still I'm rooting for "I Hope You're Happy Now"
MUSIC VIDEO Why is "Second One To Know" nominated here? That one sticks out like a sore thumb.
Rooting for "Bluebird" or "I Hope You're Happy Now" the most. Would not mind seeing "Homemade" win either though.
Can "10,000 Hours" just go away, that song sucks, Justin Bieber sucks, and frankly I'm starting to dislike Dan + Shay for doing a duet with him to begin with.
MUSICIAN I hope to see Jenee win this cause she is super talented and it would go with the females dominating narrative that seems to be hitting the CMA's this year with the nominations!

I am so, so elated to see two females nominated in EOTY. Still can’t take my eyes off the announcement picture of the category, it’s amazing.
I can’t believe it’s been 40 years since the last time... I still have a hard time grappling with the fact that a female could win who isn’t Carrie, but it’s clear that the industry is somewhat on board with the idea of Carrie being EOTY, as this is her second consecutive and third overall nomination in the past five years. So I hold out hope that if it isn’t this year, it could possibly happen down the road. If Miranda wins, it’ll be bittersweet as a Carrie fan, but in the end they are complete advocates for each other and I know Carrie would happily support Miranda winning, as I’m sure (and we already know) how Miranda feels about Carrie winning. In the end, I hope their votes don’t cancel each other out, but I can totally see that happening. It’s been decades since two women made it to the final round, so it’s anyone’s guess how that will go.
I think Luke Combs is far an away the actual 2020 EOTY based on the criteria, but clearly criteria means shit when it comes down to selecting the winner, so I really could see it going to literally anyone nominated, aside from Keith (who has seemingly become a perennial nominee). I mean, a case can be made for all five nominees, but I think Keith is the least likely to win of the bunch.
So, I have a hunch Carrie wins... but I felt that way last year, and well... In the end, all the nominees are incredibly deserving of a win, but I still think Carrie and Eric are by far the most “overdue”. Miranda, too, but to a lesser extent since she hasn’t quite performed on the same level as Eric or Carrie, at least consistently.
I will say, if there’s a year to “right a wrong”, it’s 2020; since I don’t think anyone knows what they’re voting on exactly this year, anyway. Luke Combs will likely dominate the category over the course of the decade, so while he deserves it, he’s a male artist who is young and has PLENTY of time to get there. I’d rather see Carrie, Eric, and to a lesser extent Miranda take this for 2020, because at least for Carrie and Miranda, it just feels more urgent - if that makes sense.
Another quick point, I can totally see the ACM winner in a couple weeks impacting how this turns out, too. Not sure if that would mean the same winner or different, but I kinda feel like whoever wins the ACM will probably win the CMA, too, obviously excluding Miranda if she takes the CMA.
Anyway, those are my jumbled thoughts on EOTY now that I’m home from work.
#CU4EOTY!!!
ETA: and you all know Carrie and Miranda have already texted congratulations to each other, and they’re probably just proud, overall, to be nominated - especially together. Together they’ve made history again, and there are no two better women to do that than the two who’ve really kept women relevant in country music these past 15 years. This accomplishment belongs to both of them, and it’s purely a result of their artistry, talent, hard work; and efforts to promote/welcome women into country music as well as leading the charge for women on country radio. I find so much joy in this, because it’s about damn time!
ETAA: Sorry, I’m having a lot of thoughts... but the CMA would be inclined, in all years, to come up with a special one-time; or even annual award in which the fans can participate. It doesn’t compromise the “integrity” of the major categories voted on by the CMA members, but would almost certainly generate higher viewership and greater fan interaction. Something like, “Artist of the Year 2020”; awarded for overall social media outreach, fan interaction, innovative fan outreach/interaction, overall fan support, overall artistry/entertainer, ambassadorship to country music, extracurricular ventures, just pretty much everything. Voted on entirely, or partially by the fans (one vote limit). Any artist nominated is eligible; just make it a popularity contest - only once. I just thought that could be fun, but obviously ain’t happening.

Just checking the nominees now! (completely forgot about it)
How awesome to see this many females nominated! Yay! Excited to see that Kacey got in! I was upset seeing her out of the EotY Top 15 list weeks ago (when she had her entire Oh, What a World Tour II happening within the eligible period) Surprised "Nobody But You" missed even Vocal Event Nice to see Jon Pardi getting a nom in Album. I feel like, even though he won Best New Artist years ago, he's often overlooked by these awards. I would love to see Miranda winning EotY, but I'm not holding my breath... still, exciting to see 2 females nominated at the same time!

Totally missed The Highwomen getting overlooked. Real bummer. Wow @ Blake & Luke getting nothing. From the CMA website - VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR This Award goes to the group. A group is defined as an act, composed of three (3) or more people, all of whom normally perform together and none of whom is known primarily as an individual performing artist. This Award is based on the musical performance of the group as a unit on a Country single or album release.

Okay but are Maren's touring numbers more impressive than Miranda's? Aside from Carrie, Miranda is the only current female act capable of headlining arenas. We're also talking about a year where touring was basically non-existent for at least half of the criteria period, too. I think Maren deserved a nod here for the impact she made with "The Bones," but I'm not sure why Miranda's touring numbers would be a knock against her when they're still better than Maren's. Both artists have headlined shows here in the past few years, and Maren performed at a standing room venue with a capacity of 2,000 that still had tickets available the day of the show, while Miranda performs at the arena that holds about 10,000. I think EOTY should be more than just a touring award, but if touring were to knock Miranda out of contention then Maren would definitely be out of the running too. And then for all that "The Bones" did for Maren to put her on top, her momentum has been completely destroyed by its follow-up. It almost feels like the era came to an end with how terribly "To Hell & Back" has done. Honestly, I think Female Vocalist is more her category for now and I've love to see her win that, and I don't really see her as a strong contender for EOTY without having won that yet.

The Bones should trump Miranda’s middling tour #s and other people’s tour #s should’ve trumped her nomination.

I think the award overly relies on touring. If we take touring out of it Maren had one of the biggest hits of the year, and it's crossover brings and represents country. Miranda, while she had a #1...it didn't have nearly the impact of Bones. If we make it about touring, then no Maren shouldn't be included. The problem is neither should Miranda. While yes she's the only other female arena headliner, her arena numbers just don't stack up with other country artists, many of who performed fall tours, or winter tours pre-covid + summer festivals. I just don't think, the only other woman, is a good reason for a nomination (even as much as I support women in country)
