Ranking Aaliyah Back and Forth in bottom half should be punished with something... some kind auditive torture or something like that. ... like tying them up and putting this on repeat

Too polarizing. It's not gonna happen. I'll consider it a win if he makes the top ten. I hope we can carry Warren G and Coolio as high as possible, with the expected resistance to rap. EDIT: And Snoop, too. "Gin N Juice" slaps! wow didn't even help it when i would've ranked it number 1, glad it made it there

Not bad. I'm fine with anything left except maybe my last two. Surprised Crystal Waters made the top 10 (but not complaining)

Overall a pretty good list. I wouldn’t mind any song winning but my last one.

Overall, not a great showing for me, but none of these songs are really bad at all so I'm not complaining. I'm also happy to have finally achieved a perfect ranking in this countdown (though it might end up being my only one).

The Blossoms finished at #11 with Hey Jealousy in the 93 RD. But yes - it's still an odd coincidence.

20. Don't Turn Around (19): This was another big hit back home, and their 4th personal chart-topper. I love the production here, and the ladies do a great job with their vocals. I have to say that 1994 was a great year for covers. This is miles better than Tina's version and much better than the former UK #1 in 1988 by Aswad, too. Good to see AoB with 3 top 20s, although this could've been a tad higher.
19. Back & Forth (88): This had a very nice groove and vocals, and I used to like it quite a bit, but R Kelly's shadow and actual rapping here made me rank it lower than I had if he were not heard in the song.
18. The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (51): This was his last personal top 3. I like the lush, timeless production quite a bit, but the melody is far too repetitive to me, (verses and chorus are almost the same).
17. Stay (40): This reached the top of my personal chart. It was a nice cute little ballad, with heartfelt vocals, simple but effective instrumental, and carefree melody.
16. Because The Night (18): Speaking of strong covers in 1994, this is another great example. Natalie does a great job vocally, and the band as well with a subtle instrumentation in the beginning and a richer one in the end, especially with quite effective strings. I like this more than the original version by Patti Smith Group -and the versions I've heard by co-writer Bruce Springsteen.
15. I'll Remember (28): This was Madonna's return to the top of my personal chart --previous one was Deeper & Deeper. I loved this song since I first heard it in a local pop station. The sophisticated instrumental led by smooth percussion and synths, coupled with M's tender vocals, including her warm lower register, made me quickly like it. In a way, it reminded me of Amy Grant's I Will Remember You. It's not my favorite ballad by her but amongst her 90s ballad, it's just below Frozen, You'll See and Power of Goodbye. 14. All That She Wants (10): Sad that this didn't make the top 10 in either '93 or '94. This is a modern Reggae classic. It was a big hit back home in pop and rock radio stations, and a personal chart-topper that made my yearend top 15.
13. Breathe Again (30): This made the runner-up spot of my personal chart. I really like the lush instrumental, vocals, and especially melody. I was not a big R&B fan but this clicked with me immediately. Further, I appreciated her recording a Spanish version. This helped her get airplay in Spanish stations back home.
12. Because Of Love (44): This made my personal top 20, and it's my highest ranked Janet song in this RD. I based my ranking on the Frankie & David remix version, though. I remember Shadoe playing this once or twice in AT40 and me liking it much more than the original.
11. Found Out About You (31): This was GB's first entry in my personal chart, reaching the top 5. This is a pretty good alternative tune, with pretty good, melodic but attitudinal vocals, and with classic rock instrumental. Great to see it this high.

Pleasantly surprised that Beck made the top ten. EDIT: And "Another Night" did, too? Damn, that's impressive!
Remaining ranks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 29, 36, 49, 55.
I'll be happy with anything in my top 10 winning. Heck, even my #29 was a great discovery, albeit only a discovery. "Fantastic Voyage" and "Gin N Juice" were definitely robbed. I didn't expect them to be in the top 10, but I did think they'd at least make the top 20. "Return To Innocence" also deserved better.

Here are other rock songs that made my personal top 5 in 1994:
- Life Becoming a Landslide [Manic Street Preachers]: They received some airplay with a couple other songs, but this was their first hit in rock radio back home. This really caught my attention as it had the type of dramatic vocals with progressively richer instrumentals and strong melody that I appreciate. It became their first song to enter and top my personal chart, but not the last one. A few years later MSP would become one of my favorite bands.
- Daughter [Pearl Jam]: This made the runner-up spot in my personal chart. My favorite PJ song, in terms of instrumental, melody and definitely lyrics.
- Boys Will Be Boys [The Hooters feat Cyndi Lauper]: This was a hit in one of our rock stations, and I loved it at first listen, becoming another personal chart-topper for Cyndi, and the first for Hooters. It has a nice 80s pop-rock vibe, it’s catchy, vibrant, and always puts a smile on my face. Plus, they’re both great 80s classics, so it was great to see them joining forces again –considering that Hooters’ member Rob Hyman provided the male vocals to Time After Time.
- Since I Don't Have You [Guns N’ Roses]: This was a hit in our pop and rock stations, and a personal chart-topper. I liked this strong rock cover from GNR, including his vocals.
- Fall Down [Toad The Wet Sprocket]: Their second song to reach my personal top 5. I like the much harder sound (drums/guitars combo) and vocals (including the harmonies) than their previous hits.
- Something’s Always Wrong [Toad The Wet Sprocket]: This has become my favorite Toad song. I LOVE the melody. There’s a nostalgia factor, and melancholy vibe that connects deeply with me and takes me back to several moments in my youth. Vocals are pretty effective (including the background melody line in the chorus). Plus, I find a Sting/Police influence in the final part of the chorus that strikes the right chord to me.
- Round Here [Counting Crows]: Following the success of Mr. Jones, this song made my personal top 3 and had pretty good longevity. I really like the more personal, and emotional vocals, the more subdued instrumental, and the overall melody.
- Kite [Nick Heyward]: I really liked the sophisticated vibe and baroque instrumental. The melody reminded me a bit of Fleetwood Mac. It was a minor hit in rock radio and a personal top 3.
- Backwater [Meat Puppets]: A hit in our rock stations, it also reached my personal top 5. I like the melody and the instrumental quite a bit (especially the guitars)
- Basket Case [Green Day]: Alongside Offspring, a fresh punk tune that reinvigorated the airwaves, managing to cross over to pop radios back home. Although Come Out and Play was the biggest song in my personal chart (BC peaked at #3), Green Day would become the most successful band in the long run.
- Until I Fall Away [Gin Blossoms]: I like the tender, nostalgic melody, instrumental and vocals. This was their second personal top 5 after FOAY.

- Love Is All Around [Wet Wet Wet]: A minor hit back home, except for our AC radio station. I loved the sophisticated, rich instrumental, strong vocals, that respected but updated the original Troggs song. It stayed atop my personal chart for a couple of weeks. I was surprised at how this flopped i the US despite it being the second longest running UK #1 ever -after Bryan Adam's Everything I Do.
- Happy Nation [Ace of Base]: After the success of All That She Wants, some radio stations played Wheel of Fortune and Happy Nation, the latter being the biggest hit, although not as big as All... Well, considering my love for Enigma, it's no surprise that I LOVE this song. It's actually my second favorite AoB song ever. The Gregorian chant-like part, the rich production (e.g. strong drums, organ), the overall melody and vocals, including the sorta Middle-eastern final seconds. This songs stayed for a couple of weeks atop my personal chart.
- Everybody [DJ Bobo]: An example of Ace of Base's influence was the number of reggae pop songs that became popular in '94-'95. This was a big hit back home, becoming DJ Bobo's signature hit, after a handful of songs were played in the previous couple of years. It is also my favorite of the non-AoB reggae pop songs of that period. It reached the top of my personal chart. The nostalgic instrumental brings back great memories, and that chorus may sound a bit cheesy now but I still find it a strong piece of catchy pop melody. Kudos go to non-credited female vocalist Jennifer Rüesch.
- Sleeping In My Car [Roxette]: I was a fan of Roxette by 1990, so I was looking forward to their new era. I remember some critics slightly mocking the edgier image they tried to show with their sound and video of this song. I liked it, plus it still had the strong vocals and pop sensibility of their previous hits (eg in the bridge). It peaked at #2 in my personal chart.
- Teardrops [Elton John & kd lang]: I discovered this song in one of our rock stations that played it for just a few weeks. I was lucky enough to record it with no interruption for a pop-rock mixtape. It became my favorite song off EJ's Duets album. I liked the retro/disco vibe (percussion, strings, bass), melody, and how well their vocals harmonized. It almost made the top of my personal chart.
- Go West [Pet Shop Boys]: And speaking of disco influences, Pet Shop Boys went there completely with this cover to The Village People's Go West. I loved this at first listen. The production was top notch, as it completely 90fied and PSBied this tune, adding a nostalgic mood, a sophistipop vibe -and even strong female vocals- while maintaining the typical VP chants. It reached the top of my personal chart and my yearend top 25.
- Go Away [Gloria Estefan]: Released in '93 as the 4th and final single off her Greatest Hits album, it took me a bit to learn about it and get into it, but it eventually charted and made my personal top 3. Super fun, classic Latin tune by Gloria.
- Paying The Price Of Love [Bee Gees]: As a long-time Bee Gees fan, I was pretty excited when I learned from a pop radio station back home that they were coming back. I was hoping their new song was as good as -or close to- One, and it was, at least for me. The song received minimal airplay back home, but ended up reaching the top of my personal chart. The production helped them sound current, while maintaining their classical vocals. I like the melody in chorus and pre-chorus, although that oversung bridge by Barry was unnecessary.
- For Whom the Bell Tolls [Bee Gees]: The second single off this album received more airplay back home in couple of pop stations and especially in one of our AC stations where it became a hit. I like the more 80s classic rock ballad sound and vocals. It also reached the top of my personal chart.
- Children [EMF]: I should've posted this one yesterday amongst the rock tunes... This song was a big hit back home thanks to becoming the theme song of a very popular Peruvian miniseries (El Angel Vengador: Caligula). EMF thus managed to be heard once again in rock and pop stations in 1993-94 with another track of their Schubert Dip, ending up more successful than Unbelievable. It also reached the top of my personal chart.
- Shape of My Heart [Sting]: Speaking of the miniseries Caligula, the love theme for the lead couple was this song, which ended up becoming a big hit back home, too, and in the yearend top 10 of a couple of pop stations. It also reached the top of my personal chart, becoming one of my top 5 Sting songs.

JuancaI love many of those songs too. Something's Always Wrong and Love Is All Around Me both take me back to the end of 1994. In particular there was a pre-Christmas snowstorm around that time that for some reason both songs remind me of. Also love Roxette. Sleeping in my Car was their last top 40 pop hit. The only DJ Bobo song I know is There's A Party but it's so upbeat and kind of cheesy, it's great!

Thrilled that 100% Pure Love made it this far! I was OBSESSED with this song when it was climbing the charts, and it drove me crazy that it didn't make the top 10. Back in the day when the info wasn't on-demand, I'd try to catch the MTV News clips where they would show the Billboard top 10 of the week before it was printed in the newspaper, and then would look at the magazine at the record store to see where it was if it wasn't there yet. I was just looking back at it's chart history, and after the first week at #11 Ini Kamoze came out of nowhere and kept Crystal at #11 for a second week. Hotstepper hadn't entered the pop chart yet, and I didn't know the song yet and couldn't comprehend how it could be top 10 :)
Right after I submitted my rankings, I heard Last Dance With Mary Jane a few times passing through stores and on Sirius. I probably would've ranked it 10-15 spots higher a week later.
What Is Love would be right up my alley usually, but I wasn't a big enough fan of the song to begin with and now I associate it more with SNL than the song itself.

Glad that two of my three lowest ranks in the top ten were the first two eliminated, but sad that my #1 and #3 immediately after. :( Sad that "100% Pure Love" never reached the top ten on the Hot 100, but at least it made it here.

Good song, but it's kind of worn off on me, over time. This top 5 is fantastic! I never would have expected "Loser" to be in there.
