{I COULD GET USED TO THESE TEN SONG WORD WALLS}#40: I expected this to be a little higher, given that it's 80's Pat. #39: Looking back, yeah, I probably underranked this in the other RD. It would still be bottom 30 or so there, but it's not bottom twenty-worthy. #38: Not that I'm complaining too much about this one going out, but I still kind of think the wrong one went out first. #37: Wrong one out first. The other one's fine, but this was so much better than I was expecting from a Pete solo effort. #36: Glad it did somewhat significantly better here. Given some of the songs still in, though, I can't say I'm too happy to be losing another top 20. #35: Right one out first this time, but in this case, that was to be expected. #34: I think there's a really, REALLY good song here somewhere, but I don't think it quite gets there. #33: Well, I was not expecting that #1. I feel like this one is ever so slightly overrated, if only because Kenny absolutely has better songs than this. "I'm Free" is this song's superior in every way, and I will mildly fight over this. #32: Oh, this really shouldn't have topped "Wanted". You're making me regret not participating in 1987 a bit. #31: Again, right one out first, but that was to be expected. Agree wholeheartedly. I'm Free is Kenny's most overlooked song IMO. Love everything about it. And glad to see the Big Country appreciation. The Seer is one of my favorite front-to-back albums.

#30: Even if it isn't one of my favorite Eurythmics songs, I would figure that "Would I Lie to You?" will do better than this next year...right? #29: "Nights in White Satin" is one of my all time favorite songs. There is a massive gulf in quality between their biggest hit and second biggest hit. This isn't the worst thing I've heard, but compared to what they are capable of, it's just so inferior. #28: Okay, sure. I didn't love this, but I expected worse. #27: I knew this song's days were numbered when Tom joined gates in wanting it out...though he almost ranked it top 25, okay then. This isn't one of their absolute best hits, but I will always have a humungous soft spot for it. #26: I just don't care for mid-80's Heart. I like "There's the Girl", and I can tolerate "Alone", but that's about it.
If I'm not mistaken, that clears my bottom 50 60. I thought I ranked one or two songs a little lower, but I guess not. Really glad that one song, in particular, got this far. I imagine it'll go out tomorrow, but at least it made the top 25.

#40
There's nothing glaringly wrong with this Pat Benatar track - too much keyboard if I had to nitpick - but it was just okay for me in a year where there were plenty of other okay songs. If I reranked this list from scratch, it could easily go up several spots.
#39
I struggled a lot with placing this one. The vocals are only so-so, but there's an appealing earnestness to the songwriting here, and the subdued instrumentation stands out a bit.
#38
Very Poppy '80s Heart. While not on par with their '70s classics, this was still a catchy AOR track that shows off the versatility of Ann Wilson's voice. She sounds just as nice on pop songs or ballads as she does on rockers.
#37
A little slow burning - the fact that it's the opening to the album explains the lengthy intro - but once it gets fired up, things get good. The clever synth usage here gives this song a unique atmosphere, and the track's chorus feels appropriately dramatic. Of course having David Gilmour on guitar duties doesn't hurt either.
#36
While this track isn't one of my personal favorites from the band, I do love Big Country's sound in general. They had a signature blend of folk, alternative, and AOR influences that sounded like nothing else. Nice to see them in the top 40, even if I wasn't particularly helping their cause on this one.
#35
This featured a perfectly fine performance from Stevie Nicks with an okay hook in the chorus, so I get why some ranked this one high. My issue is that the keyboard driven music here sounds like a hundred other '80s ballads.
#34
It certainly has a unique sound to it. I actually rather like the instrumental work on this track, and the groove here is pretty solid. However, the staccato chorus vocals get old fast, and I'm not a fan of that speak-singing bit that Pete Townshend does throughout the song. You know, with all the Pete Townshend making the charts this year, I'm surprised that no AOR stations thought to toss on White City Fighting, the climax from the White City album.
#33
Fun, uptempo synth rock from Kenny Loggins. No big complaints here about the song or the rating.
#32
Bon Jovi may have evolved into an embodiment of genre clichés by the end of the decade, but they were still bringing some over-the-top fun at this point of their career. The riffing during the verses chugs along nicely, the mandatory-for-the-genre flashy guitar solo sounds fine, and, above all, the band absolutely nails the huge stadium rock chorus. It's a fair bit derivative yes, but very enjoyable stuff nonetheless. Probably still torturous for anyone hates the glam metal/'80s stadium rock sound though.
#31
I'm probably one of the few here who enjoy this more than Silent Running. I'll openly say that Silent Running is the more creative song - it's certainly a more nuanced one if nothing else - but the chorus hook on this track definitely had me hooked, and the synth work here is some of my favorite on this top 100.
#30
I couldn't fit it into my top 50, but given the excellent bassline and strong vocal performance by Annie Lennox, I can certainly see how it made top 30.
#29
The actual songwriting here isn't too bad, the band manages to find some pretty good melodies in fact. The production work and instrumentation are absolutely garish though. I get what the band was trying to do - adapt their lush orchestral sound for the synthesizer era - but it doesn't work for me. Everything from the bass to the backing vocals sounds synthetic and processed, and those keyboard tones are pure Velveeta.
#28
Having this as my bottom track feels too harsh, but this song just bores me. I can tolerate it, but when I hear this, I think little more than "yep, that's definitely Ric Ocasek" and feel close to nothing for it. The keyboard work is languid and uncompelling, and Ric Ocasek sounds like he's sleepwalking his way through vocal duties. In a year that had some offensively awful songs, this would have done better, but as things stand, it drew the shortest straw from a batch of mediocre songs. Sorry Ric.
#27
Another fine bit of '80s pop rock from Phil Collins and company. Like most of the Genesis hits this year, this one was a matter of simple concept, solid execution. I've got a bit of a preference for uptempo Genesis (at least during their pop years), so I gave it the edge over Throwing It All Away.
#26
While I feel like having more of a rock edge would have benefited this one, it's a fine pop ballad as is, in large part due to the memorable chorus and strong vocal performance.

Year-End Rank: 118 | Peak: #12 | Weeks: 13 Album: What a Life!
Share your thoughts on this song below! I was aware the Divinyls got some rock radio airplay in the '80s, but I didn't know they had that big of a hit. It's a good single, although not my favorite from that album.

48. When the Heart Rules the Mind (21): This was a great discovery in a previous RD this year, and I still find it as good as then. Strong, rich instrumentals, vocals and melody. 46. Why Can't This Be Love (4): Huh?!! This has always been my favorite Van Hagar song, and their second biggest hit in my personal chart after Jump, reaching my top 10 back in the day. Love the melody and the slightly unusual mix of strong verse vocals and softer chorus vocals. Too many Hagar haters here ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif) 45. Addicted to Love (7): A song that has gotten better with time for me. It was a minor hit back home and in my personal chart, but in the longer term it's received good recurrent airplay. I find this sexy, with enough rock, pop and even R&B doses to sound interesting and unique enough in the 80s, plus his vocals are great --and that video is iconic ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif) 44. Wild Wild Life (30): I admit I added some extra bonus points to this song, as it sounds a bit more pop or modern rock than mainstream rock. I still like it quite a bit, though. It was a hit back home, reaching the top of one of our pop stations, and the top 5 in my personal chart. It's pure fun, catchy, with nice melody -strong bridge. 43. I Still Believe (86): Yes! My lowest remaining thus far :) I didn't care much for the melody or the vocals, especially in the chorus. Not even the synthpop vibe made me like as I thought it would. It just felt plain to me. 42. Burning Heart (17): Another big hit back home and a personal top 3. Still sounds epic to me, with a great 80s soundtrack vibe, with that anthemic, glorious chorus and darker verses, and pretty strong vocals. Really good representative of classic mainstream rock in my opinion, and I think that anti-Hot-100ism has affected its performance in this RD ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif) 39. Welcome to the Boomtown (76): This was an unmemorable first listen. The instrumental had potential but didn't fully commit to either rock or sophistipop, and the melody and vocals were simply weak to me. 38. Nothin' at All (71): It hurts to rank Heart this low -again- but I didn't find the melody or instrumental that memorable, and I have pretty high expectations for them. I admit I might've been a bit too harsh, tho. 36. Look Away (52): I had this in my 40s most of the time. Pretty good discovery. Nice melody and energetic instrumental. A bit more familiarity would've helped... 35. Talk to Me (10): A hit back home, and a personal top 5 that brings back pretty good memories. One of my top 5 favorite songs by Stevie. I like the mysterious vibe, with the lush instrumentals including brass, drums and synths, and of course her unique vocals. A classic. 34. Face To Face (18): This was a big hit, reaching the top in pop stations back home and in my personal chart. I love the high energy, the instrumentation, the super fun vibe that's helpful for long highway drives, and even the jazzy intro is a nice touch. Btw, Give Blood was a GREAT discovery for me, too, a bit more interesting than FTF, but just not as fun 33. Danger Zone (20): A minor hit back home that made my personal top 10. That intro is a CLASSIC that captures the 80s soundtrack rock vibe perfectly, Another great song to drive to, with the strongest energy in instrumental and vocals from a song by KL -although it's not my favorite by him. 32. You Give Love a Bad Name (14): I didn't have much hope considering the unfairly low performance of LOAP, but I still find this a strong representative of BJ's catalog. It's not in my top 5 -and I like LOAP more- but this is a great representative of its sub-genre, with a super catchy, anthemic chorus, and strong enough rock sound. At least it's a new high --but BJ has long deserved a top 30 hit... 31. All I Need Is a Miracle (11): Oh my, this may be the song with the most personal memories in this RD. From my first trip to the US in '86 to Summer vacation trips in '87. I love the instrumental, vocals, melody, and the full 80s rich sound of this tune. This is their biggest hit back home, with good recurrent airplay, and their second song to reach the top of my personal chart.
