40. Sex as a Weapon - Pat BenatarThis song has its good days and bad days. It certainly is not one of her Best Shots, but I also wouldn't dismiss it. It's catchy and fun with the lyrics. Funny enough the weakest link is the chorus. Anyway I didn't ask for Pat Benatar to sound like Animtion, but this is what happens when Rock gets renovated. 39. Welcome to the Boomtown - David & David Seems this RD had the same idea as the official one when it came to this song. It sounded pretty boring on Modern Rock and it sounded even worse between Ric Ocasek and Steve Winwood hits. 38. Nothin' at All - HeartI think Heart fit well into the Glam Rock style of the 80's. They had the right idea of what the young crowd wanted back then and sounded great doing it. 37. Give Blood - Pete TownshendI really don't like Pete Townshend as a vocalist nor did I care for any of his songs from the the list. This one blows that other one away, but it never really went in the direction I hoped it would. The melody was not particularly engaging either. I would have upgraded that "Barefootin'" extra instead. 36. Look Away - Big CountryI still really love this song. Just couldn't fit it on my top 40 this time around. 35. Talk to Me - Stevie NicksNot a bad song. Stevie nicks did pretty good with her poprock songs. I'm just glad this one dropped out first. 34. Face the Face - Pete TownshendForget the vocals for this one, because it was the music that tuned me out. There was some piano jazzy fusion going on that was just too ahead of my time. Way Too artsy for me on any level. 33. Danger Zone - Kenny LogginsAnother great movie soundtrack song. This one has a lot of that eclectic energy of 80's poprock. You had fast melodies tied in with dance elements that stem from the way the bass sounded. It made the song sound faster, and its the type of rock that sounds perfect for Pop and Rock charts alike 32. You Give Love a Bad Name - Bon JoviI give the sole top 10 rank for this rock classic. Is there any doubt that this is my all time favorite rock genre? Anyway I look at it a bunch of great songs are gonna fall tonight. I doubt we will rank any amateur Bon Jovi like "Runaway" from the first album so I went all out with this song. On a different note who thinks that Ava Max song "Kings & Queens" sounds like this song? 31. All I Need Is a Miracle - Mike + the MechanicsI ended up liking this one more than "Silent Running", because of Paul Young's vocals. Back then I didn't know there were two vocalists. I just knew they had different tones which made the songs sound totally different to each other. This song had a bit more of that Hot 100 poprock vibe I was into. Almost taking right into Sophistipop territoy. 30. Missionary Man - Eurythmics This one is ok. I never quite got used to them changing their sound to this blusey style rock. They completely lost that dark mystical tone their New Wave/Synthpop songs had. 29. Your Wildest Dreams - The Moody BluesI'm not the biggest Moody Blues fan, so when one comes along that I really liked ,and charted then I'm giving it a nice push up the list. Its hard to explain the elemet I mostly liked from this song, but I pinpoint a distant sort of Country meets Progressive poprock ,and It really gave the song that aesthetic tone my listening radar picks up on. 28. Emotion in Motion - Ric Ocasekand Speaking of Aesthetic this one hits my soft spot every time. The song's melody is simply gorgeous. Weather or not Ric was going for a fairytale musical tone this one hit the mark. Ric's vocals are filled with some serious triumphant emotion with out even hitting a high note. I didn't think that was possible til I heard this song. The lyrics feel very personal and even the dark shades came off for this song. I can't quite possibly fathom why this song a #100, and yet somehow it did. This one ,and Heart's "These Dreams" are the most beautiful songs of the year. Question? How high will rank "Something To Grab For"? 27. Invisible Touch - Genesiseasily one of my favorite Genesis songs ever. I think if I had not heard this 100 times on pop format I might have thought it fit this rock format better. This is one of Phil Collins Fun time Genesis songs. The vibe he brought over from his solo album. I like it. It's playful. I only wish it would have made the Modern Rock Rd where I could put it in my top 10. 26. These Dreams - HeartThis is a really great showing for a Power ballad of this magnitude. I wasn't expecting any one to rank it higher than me. Even if I would have gone the extra mile and put it in my top 10 I still couldn't top that #1 rank. Not complaining either since I'm pretty sure it helped. This song like many of the 80's Powerballad where simply heavenly. Say what you will but Rock bands always made the best ballads ever. *So at this point I'm thinking amateur R.E.M is gonna make the top 10. ![B-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/notamused.png) I just cannot put that song in the same range as "Losing My Religion" , "What's The Frequency Kennith" or even "Shiny Happy People". *So my #100 makes the top 25. I'm pretty sure everyone but gonecountry has figured it out by now, so can we please get that misfit out before the top 20. The song not gonecountry . Also imagine my #1 song being your #100 and vice a versa. That would be a hoot * I'm kinda surprised Ozzy's most Glamourized song makes the top 25. Not the best style for him and you will be surprised at my rank for that song. it's not that's low its that it a low rank for my list.

I definitely did not expect this song to make the top 25. Now if "Broken Wings" could see similar success I'd be overjoyed. 24

This may be their last appearance on the mainstream rock side but, at the very least, we are ranking this song again in the 1985 Modern Rock rankdown 23

I don’t think I’ll ever understand the appeal of Ozzy (musically anyway) - he’s gotta show up soon, right?

1/3 of the remaining songs are by Genesis & Genesis alum
I love Cars & INXS, but I won’t be sad if their songs here don’t make the Top Ten as these aren’t their top tier songs

#25 A perfectly decent sample of INXS that has a nice groove going for it. It's no "What You Need" though.
#24
As far as ultra-synthy AOR goes, this is far from the worst you can do. Richard Page has a nice voice, and the chorus of the song sounds great. The biggest issue here for me is that I'm just kind of burned out on it.
#23
The Alarm cultivated a sort of "U2 goes AOR" sound here that combines alternative tones with some pop energy and radio-friendly hooks. It works remarkably well, and I can definitely see why this was a hit on both mainstream and alternative.
#22
I loved that little keyboard bit during the verses, but the rest of the track was just okay pop rock and nothing more.
#21
Rush lost me for a while after Signals. They still had some great tracks during the late '80s (nice to see Time Stand Still doing great in 1987), but the soft, airy production and AOR influences they brought in during this time don't work much for me. This song is afflicted by those problems, but luckily, the band still came through with some great songwriting. The more buildup based structure here stands out in a year with plenty of straight-forward chorus-verse-chorus material.
#20
Some prime '80s AOR here. Eddie Money got pretty watered down by the end of the decade, but he was capable of dropping the occasional great track earlier in his career. He certainly delivers here, with huge hooks and dramatic vocals. I love the way the song propels into the chorus and the little bursts of saxophone are a great touch. Also essential are the backing vocals provided by Ronnie Spector, who came out of a six year retirement to be on this track.
#19
I much prefer this to the other Stevie Nicks track on our list. It's still very much in the '80s pop rock vein, but it's much harder hitting, with a bigger chorus, a solid guitar solo, a hotter mix, and heavier synths. The issues I had with "Talk To Me" were fully absent here.
#18
The songwriting by itself is pretty straight-forward AOR material, but there's a beautiful ambience to this Fixx track that elevates it into greatness. This one doesn't seem to get any airplay around where I live, so it was nice hearing it.
#17
While the keyboard sound anchors the group firmly in the '80s, Bruce Hornsby has a sort of singer/songwriter sensibility to his writing that seems almost out of place for this era of rock radio. For the longest time, I didn't particularly care for this track - probably due to Hornsby's half-spoken vocal delivery - but the subtle style and solid lyric writing has gradually won me over.
#16
Ozzy Osbourne's album quality was in decline by this point, but this single is one of his many '80s hard rock classics. There's no one thing here I'd really pick as a highlight. The guitars, Ozzy, the songwriting - things are just good across the board. I know Ozzy himself has been very critical of the production work on this album (and not without reason), but the semi-glam late '80s sound suits this track well enough.
