The battle for the final spot in the top 10 was very tight with songs #12, #11, and #10 being separated by just a point apiece.
Stats to consider for #12:

Much like "Texarkana" before it, this song misses the top 10 the second time around. My condolences, aerodynamite . 12

{GUESS WE'RE DOING A FULL WORD WALL THIS TIME}#25: I didn't think there was much separating the two INXS songs, they were both good. I guess the right one is higher, though I'm surprised it went out before the top 20. #24: I like "Kyrie", but "Broken Wings" is better. #23: This and "Rain in the Summertime" are the best songs I've heard from The Alarm. I can't imagine this is going to perform similarly in the shark tank that is Modern Rock '85. #22: Til Tuesday have proven to be a big surprise to me over time. I will say this: They have still yet to top the big one, from what I've heard. #21: I assumed this was another song, because I thought Rush had "common" frequency by now. Power Windows is better than people remember it being. #20: Given its status as a previous Hot 100 RD top ten, I thought this would get much closer to making the top ten. I'm also kind of glad it didn't. It's Eddie's best song by a mile, at any rate. #19: GTA good will can take you a looooong way with me, even with a song that isn't really all that great. I'll take it being a new pb for Stevie. #18: Feels weird that I'm in the bottom part of the gap when I'm just six spots away from the top part of the gap. Really surprised this didn't top "Driven Out", given that it did 10 spots better in the other RD. #17: Two bottom twos for a song this inoffensive, that is absolutely hilarious. I mean, I'll take it, that clears my bottom 70 now, but that's still funny. #16: You tried to not give it away by taking out the frequency, Rowell, but I feel like you needed to take out the other parts, because I knew this was Ozzy based on the fact that the only other possibilities have been ranked before or have multiple songs. I'm also a super sleuth, so it's a little unfair. ![:giggle:](//storage.proboards.com/1258812/images/KYziZwTotWGtjvzyvGqr.gif) On one hand, I expected this to do worse, so I'm really glad it made the top 20...but those low rankings worry me for when we get to Ozzy's "best" solo songs. "Shot in the Dark" is a personal favorite, but it's not "better" than "Bark", for example. #15: ...this should not be lower than the other one. What the hell #14: Figured this would miss out on the top ten, though I'm glad this got so far, too. #13: This isn't quite a patch on the better Cars songs, but it's still fun. Crazy to think that they haven't made the top ten yet, though I have to imagine that's changing soon. #12: God dammit, Doc. #11: WOW. Not going to front here, I didn't know the specifics of how "Electric Blue" performed, so I just assumed that this was going to be a favorite to do damage in the top ten based solely on its Modern Rock RD performance. Replace "Sanctify Yourself" with "All the Things She Said", and I wouldn't have a problem with this top ten at all.

#15
Simple Minds deliver some quality pop rock with a memorable hook... and another track that I like more than what my rating would indicate. To be honest, I really didn't dislike anything outside of my bottom 8, so I feel kind of bad for a lot of songs in my 60-80 range.
#14
I'm not nearly as big a fan of this song as many here seem to be, but I can see how this one got so far. It's got a haunting atmosphere and a thematic heaviness that few other tracks this year possess. I feel like the album length version of this could have been trimmed a bit though, and the music just doesn't engage me as much as many of the Genesis alumni hits this year did. Mike Rutherford does find the perfect vocal tone for the track though.
#13
A good, catchy Cars song in my opinion. I certainly don't mind it doing well, but I'm surprised to see it go this high with only 3 top 15 ranks.
#12
It's an alright R.E.M. track, though not a personal favorite of mine. It is a solid showcase of their sound during this era, and it's earthy tones, low key songwriting, and relatively dry production certainly stand out in a year filled with big glossy hooks and maxed out production values.
#11
Sorry. It's listenable, and I kind of like the dense atmosphere, but overall, I just wasn't feeling this one. It falls flat for me.

30. Missionary Man (80): Annie Lennox is one of my favorite artists ever, and Eurythmics have a lot of songs I love --but MM is one of my least favorite of their singles ever. The instrumental is ok, but the melody is very weak. Even her lower register vocals do not shine as well as they could. I would've ranked any of their other singles off Revenge much higher. Thorn in my Side would've likely been top 10, When Tomorrow Comes likely a top 25, and The Miracle of Love a top half. 29. Your Wildest Dreams (6): The first song I heard off TMB was Sitting at the Wheel, which I didn't like. YWD was love at first listen, even when it wasn't a big hit back home. From the airy synth-based orchestral intro, to the nostalgic melody in the verses with warm lead and backing vocals that hit a right bittersweet emotion, to the more intense chorus, to the musical bridge that many a time has made me drop a tear -even now- thinking about the good times from the past. One of my favorite melodic songs of the '80s. 28. Emotion In Motion (45): This received very little airplay back home, and didn't make my personal chart, but I've grown to like it much more with time. The sorta sophistipop style works well as does his emotional vocals. Were the melody a bit stronger (especially in the chorus), I would've ranked it higher. 27. Invisible Touch (32): A big hit back home, a personal chart-topper, and one of my favorite songs by Genesis. Excellent, effervescent melody and instrumental, with crisp production and strong vocals, although it felt a bit more pop than mainstream or classic rock amongst this bunch, that's why I put it in my 30s instead of my teens, and why I gave the edge to LoC over IT. reat to see it this high as I thought it could be considered too poppy for this RD. 26. These Dreams (24): Another song with great memories of my Summer of 1986. I hadn't heard of them before What About Love, and I liked each single better, with this one reaching the top 3 of my personal chart. I love the mix of sophistipop and classic rock ballad combination here, with a lovely breezy sound and strong vocals. Great to see it this high, too. 25. Listen Like Thieves (80): Like with Missionary Man, I love many INXS songs, but this has always felt underwhelming, especially in terms of its overall melody, with a specially weak chorus for INXS. The production is pretty good, though, and yeah I could've ranked it a bit higher just for that reason, but there were many songs I ended up finding much more interesting in this list. 24. Kyrie (23): A big hit back home and a personal chart topper. Quite a unique type of song, from its vocal intro to the a cappellas to the lyrics. Great vocals and strong enough instrumental. Great to see it this high. 23. Strength (55): A nice discovery. It sounded much rocker than RITS, almost like an early U2 type of song, with a nice doses of synths, too, and great vocals. With a tad stronger melody, I would've put it in my top half, but don't mind it seeing it in the top quarter. 22. What About Love (59): A nice discovery, too, but it took a few listens to 'get it'. I initially had it in my 80s as it was a bit easy to overlook. However, the vocals and instrumental were enticing and with each listen I ranked it higher. Maybe more listens and I would've ranked it in my top half. I don't think I would've put it in my 40s though because of the strength of the other songs in this list. 21. Manhattan Project (19): A song I discovered in the 00s. I love the eclectic musical composition (the bridge especially), instrumental, and especially the lyrics, as well as the main melody. It's not in my top 5 Rush, but pretty good anyway. 20. Take Me Home Tonight (31): One of my favorite EM songs -alongside Walk on Water and Think I'm In Love- and a great representative of the 80s keyboard-infused rock sound. The sax and Be my little baby interpolation elevate it. 19. I Can't Wait (29): I LOVE the production, but I've always had a bit of an issue with the slightly messy melody in the beginning of the verses and after the glorious chorus hook of "I can't wait, I can't wait". Regardless, I'm always happy to see Stevie high in a RD. I just wish either would've made the top 10. 18. Secret Separation (34): another good discovery. And at this point, after a handful of good discoveries by this band, I’ve just downloaded their Greatest Hits ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif) I like the melody, with a hint of nostalgia, the synth-guitar combo, and the clear and emotional vocals. 17. The Way It Is (22): A big hit back home and a personal chart-topper. I love the instrumental (especially in the bridge) and overall melody. Their best song by far. 16. Shot in the Dark (27): A great discovery in this RD. This more sophisticated sound and stadium sound surprisingly worked very well for me, combined with the typical hard vocals and attitude by Ozzy.

25. Listen Like Thieves - INXSGreat song. The one to anchor my favorite songs of this year in Rock. Kinda weird that we didn't get to rank it on Alt. It didn't get as much attention on radio as "What You Need" so it didn't get as etched into my music archives, but it's still a great song. 24. Kyrie - Mr. MisterI wasn't expecting my rank to be the highest, but I was a Hot 100 Rock kid, and this one was all over the place. Found myself crooning Kyrie all the time. Funny thing is that I probably wouldn't go for a similar sounding song if it came out in 2020. Mr. Mister were definitely on the charts in the right music era. 23. Strength - The AlarmI was almost certain I would have the highest rank for this one. Mainly because it's one of those songs that has grown on me throughout the years. Has a bit of that Cult style in the guitars and it's the type of song I would want to hear on the Modern Rock format. It also reminded me a lot of U2's "I Will Follow" guitar power which was a big staple on early 80's KLOS. 22. What About Love - Til Tuesday Now this is the sound I liked for Til Tuesday. A nice mx of Modern Rock with just a pinch top top 40 pop to keep it aesthetic ,and catchy 21. Manhattan Project - RushI get it. It's Rush, but no way I rank this in the same range as the other bigger hits just because they are Rush. This song did nothing for me on a musical level. I didn't even know of its exisitence til I saw it on the list. The anticipation I was brewing inside was a huge dissapointed once I clicked on it. It was way too complicated for Rush. Didn't care for the mellow sound either, and by the time it picks up I was exhausted. There is a reason this Rush song misses the top 20 this time. 20. Take Me Home Tonight - Eddie Money Great song. The NRGy of this song is massive, and it was Eddie's idea to bring in Ronnie Spector for the chorus. Truthfully I like "Think I'm In Love" and "Shaken" even better, but I don't think I'm going to be able to reserve a slot for Eddie in my 1982 top 10 so I gave this song top 5 action instead. Definitely my third favorite maybe tied with "Two Ticket To Paradise". It's great to finally see Eddie Money get the recognition he deserves in these Rock rds. 19. I Can't Wait - Stevie NicksLove this song. The power she propels with her vocals is perfect for the dance vibe of the song. The fast bass line takes the song right to the edge of Hi-Energy music ,and I love that she took that vibe one step further than "Stand Back". This would be my favorite Stevie Nicks song, and It has everything to do with the NRG dance vibe the song has to begin with. There is even a proper extended Dance Mix that really brings to life all the fast NRG aspects of the song, and has a percussion breakdown and everything. I didn't expect PULSE to shoot a Hi NRG song up this list, but great call on everyone's part. 18. Secret Separation - The FixxThis would be one of the few Modern Rock cruise overs that I kept nice and high on my Rock chart as well. I always loved The Fixx, and truthfully I first heard them on KLOS with "Stand Or Fall" so to me they perfect for the rock format. Also this one sounds just as catchy on this list as it does on the other. 17. The Way It Is - Bruce Hornsby & the RangeHaving me wait this long for this travesty to show up is simply torture. I never got the appeal for this guy's music, and I really don't like his vocal delivery on music. If you remove the music it almost sounds like he is talking. Whatever this sounds fine on an easy listening/pop format, but no way I want to listen to this guy between my Van Halen and Boston Album Rock dosages. so yeah good riddance. BTW I think this guy was the last band to bring in vibes I don't go for on Rock formats, so I might have a harder time picking that #100 song from this moment on. maybe? 16. Shot in the Dark - Ozzy OsbourneYup that is not a typo. That is a #28. I didn't like this song for Ozzy. I don't think he fit well with the Poppier Glam MEtal sounds. The bassline and synths feel too pretty for Ozzy. Leave this for Bon Jovi or even Kiss which I would have loved from them, but not Ozzy. You'll get my Metal support for "Bark At The Moon", "Flying High Again", even the ballad "So Tired". I'm also not gonna give Ozzy less than a #30, but also not my full support for this one. I still like tho, and I love seeing all that top 10 support for any Glam Metal song on a Mainstream Rock Rd.. 15. All the Things She Said - Simple MindsThe three singles off this album were really great. I don't think they are par with "Don't You....", but they were certainly what I like to listen to on rock format besides Metal. My favorite part of the song is where he and her take turns at the 2:10 mark, and I just love how that melody progresses into the guitar solo. Weird how we don't get to rank this on Modern Rock. What was up with that format anyway? leaving so many great hits out of the top 100. I still can't wrap my head around that. 14. Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground) - Mike + the MechanicsGenesis, Rush and This band are about as Prog Rock as I can get, but they do put out the goods. This one always has a mystic aura about it. The way the bass was played gave the song a feeling of running and the synths made it seem like someone running after them. I also thought this was Genesis back then. 13. Tonight She Comes - The CarsThis was always going to be my #1 song. It was #1 on my own personal charts for 6 weeks. Yes I love the Cars, and especially Ric's vocals, but I also really love Ric's lyrics about girls. There is always that "she" theme in their music. Weather its the object of desire theme are just girls in general and I love that about cars lyrics. This one gets really playful with the whole " Tonight She Comes" innuendo. All these 80's song's have a story behind it. You can look up on wiwkipadia all the great trivia about this song. For one it almost was gong to be on Ric's solo album instead. I was glad it wasn't ,because we wouldn't have gotten all the amazing contributions from the rest of the band. Particularly that air guitar worthy solo by Elliot Easton. Man he hit that one on the mark. In closing I grabbed this little quote from Wiki "The title of the song is yet another Ric Ocasek double entendre, although as Easton said, "It doesn't actually say that she reaches orgasm. It could mean that tonight she's coming over to make popcorn." I'll take this #13, but I really want to see some Cars top 10 action for the 'Heartbeat City' singles. 12. Fall on Me - R.E.M.So where is the Frequency Michael? ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif) Glad this was not the song that introduced me to R.E.M.. It just sounds too amateur in production to the later perfection of "Losing My Religion" and others. this kind of mellow song writing gets trampled on a list this powerful. In the end I didn't like these R.E.M song on Modern Rock list either. 11 .No Promises - Icehouse Certified Sophistipop classic. One of those songs where the pre chorus is even better than the chorus itself. That will usually make the song even better because the chorus is already good, but a great prechorus ,or bridge to chorus takes it to another level. It dropped a little to make room for my jammed pack top 20, but I still love it. * That top 10 is a PULSE top 10, No doubt about that. My last remaining top 10 song makes the list. Other than that only a few of those made my top 40.
