Today's extra is popular track from their In a Special Way album. It was notably sampled in The Notorious B.I.G.'s remix to "One More Chance", Ashanti's "Foolish", and Mariah's "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time".

Today's extra comes to us from a former member of the group One Way. Her biggest solo hit peaked at #5 on the soul chart.

Today's extra is a duet by a soul legend from Philadelphia and an up-and-coming female artist from New Jersey. Peaking at #5 on the soul chart, it was the first charted single for the up-and-comer.

Is it just me, or is 1984 when R&B began to flex on the pop charts? Black musicians held the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 in 18 out of 19 weeks during the summer and fall of 1984:
July 7: "When Doves Cry" - Prince July 14: "When Doves Cry" - Prince July 21: "When Doves Cry" - Prince July 28: "When Doves Cry" - Prince August 4: "When Doves Cry" - Prince August 11: "Ghostbusters" - Ray Parker Jr. August 18: "Ghostbusters" - Ray Parker Jr. August 25: "Ghostbusters" - Ray Parker Jr. September 1: "What's Love Got To Do With It" - Tina Turner September 8: "What's Love Got To Do With It" - Tina Turner September 15: "What's Love Got To Do With It" - Tina Turner September 22: "Missing You" - John Waite September 29: "Let's Go Crazy" - Prince & The Revolution October 6: "Let's Go Crazy" - Prince & The Revolution October 13: "I Just Called To Say I Love You" - Stevie Wonder October 20: "I Just Called To Say I Love You" - Stevie Wonder October 27: "I Just Called To Say I Love You" - Stevie Wonder November 3: "Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)" - Billy Ocean November 10: "Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)" - Billy Ocean
The streak began when "When Doves Cry" by Prince supplanted "The Reflex" by Duran Duran at #1 on July 7, 1984. The streak ended when "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" by Wham! supplanted "Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)" by Billy Ocean on November 17, 1984. During that 19-week period, "Missing You" by John Waite was the only song not by a black musician to spend any time at #1, and it spent only one week at #1, on September 22, 1984.
For what it's worth, I'm surprised that "What's Love Got To Do With It" by Tina Turner didn't reach #1 on the R&B chart.

"I'm So Excited" also reentered the Hot 100 in 1984, and peaked at #9. Though "Fire," "He's So Shy" and "Slow Hand" were all bigger hits than any of the aforementioned, 1984 was still the Pointer Sisters' most successful year overall, with three Top 10 pop hits (four, if you want to include "Neutron Dance," which debuted in late 1984 but peaked in early 1985). Unfortunately, The Pointer Sisters never had a #1 pop hit, with "Fire" and "Slow Hand" peaking at #2 on the Hot 100 in 1979 and 1981, respectively, and "He's So Shy" peaking at #3 on the Hot 100 in 1980. Interestingly, The Pointer Sisters also have a bit of a country music background. Their 1974 hit "Fairytale" made them the first black group ever to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and the first all-female group ever to win a country Grammy Award. In fact, that was their first of three Grammy Awards.
