Today's extra was one of the earliest and biggest freestyle songs. Topping the dance chart, it also peaked at #2 on the soul chart and #8 on the Hot 100.

Had this hit #1, this would have definitely been a number one contender for the year for me. Love this song. And Give Me Tonight is just as good.

Classic. I didn't mind Jordin Sparks' version either.

14. Hello (6): I know this may be a bit too syrupy, but I still like it especially in terms of vocal and instrumental . It was a big hit back home in radio and TV, and a personal chart-topper. Was hoping it could make the top 10. 13. Cool It Now (13): I do like this --it was a personal top 5 back in the day-- but I like the other 12 songs more. 12. I Just Called To Say I Love You (9): Similar to Hello. Another personal chart topper and a song that I still like. It felt more Pop/AC than Soul for this RD, so that's why I barely ranked it inside my top 10, but it's still a song with great melody and vocals, and one of my favorite from his 80s catalog. 11. Ghostbusters (12): Another fun song that reached the top of my personal chart and, like #14 and #12 was a big hit back home. It's got a stronger production than those, but it sounded more pop than Soul.
10. If Only You Knew (18): This was a discovery that I wanted to like, but I didn't like the melody, and I felt it was pretty boring. She sings well as always, but that wasn't enough to skip the bottom in this list unfortunately. 9. Caribbean Queen (3): Another big hit back home, and one of my favorite songs of the year --top 15-- and still a song that I listen to often. 8. Encore (16): Another discovery. Nice vocals, and cool production, but melody didn't grab me enough. 7. Somebody's Watching Me (11): Another personal chart-topper that still sounds good to me. Pretty good production, that I could've ranked slightly higher --but I ended up giving extra points to songs that I felt sounded a bit more soulful. 6. Solid (4): A minor hit back home and in my personal chart, that I've grown to like much more with time. Plus, this sounded pretty soul to me.

Prince vs. Chaka...the top 2 will be revealed shortly!
But first, an extra. It's by a singer who was starting the greatest run of her career. The song topped the Hot 100, but couldn't quite get there on the soul chart, spending 5 weeks at #2.

Fun fact: I met Shannon while we were both contestants on Beat Shazam Season 1. She was the sweetest! Before I realized who she was, she had the vibe of a star. She was there with Bobby from rap group Stetsasonic and when I saw her name in graffiti on the back of her denim jacket, I was like OMG this is THE Shannon that I grew up listening to. Legend!

And now the top 2...they're separated by just 5 points! Usually the song that has the most #1 rankings ends up on top, but as you'll soon see, that's not quite the case here. 2. When Doves Cry - Prince"When Doves Cry" was the first release from the Purple Rain soundtrack. Also topping the Hot 100 and dance charts, it would be crowned Billboard's top pop and soul song for 1984. The song would re-enter the Top 10 of the Hot 100 and R&B charts after his death. Not bad for a song with no bass. MC Hammer sampled it in 1990 for his song "Pray". Time for the #1...congrats to gonecountry for a perfect top 3! 1. I Feel For You - Chaka KhanFirst recorded by Prince for his 1979 self-titled album, Chaka made the song her own. Featuring Stevie Wonder on harmonica and Grandmaster Melle Mel rapping, "I Feel For You" was her biggest solo hit, topping the dance chart and reaching the Top 5 on the Hot 100. It would win 2 Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. Thanks Soulsista for another great rankdown. Glad to see Chaka win for such a signature song. Looking forward to 1985. I peaked at 1985's #1's. I already know my last place. Nothing can possibly beat WATW for pure schlock...

I'm sooooo glad Chaka won! It's kinda funny how the Top 3 was written and produced by Prince. I'm happy for Chaka and Deniece. I love LHIFTB!

Wow, I was not expecting this at all! I was totally thinking Prince had it in the bag for logical reasons, but I am so pleasantly surprised to see my #1 win it instead. Great song from Chaka!

SHOCKED that When Doves Cry didn't win, as it is one of the best songs ever made from the best album ever made from the best artist to exist. That said, since I Feel For You was his song to begin with, he still wins. Thanks for another fantastic rankdown!!
