"Love You Down" was their second song to top the soul chart, as well as their second Top 10 on the Hot 100. It deals with the subject of a young man being with an older woman, which was considered taboo at the time (some would argue that it's still taboo today). Singer INOJ covered the song in the '90s.

12. Your Smile - Rene & Angela

"Your Smile" was the second soul charttopper for this duo, and was one of the reasons for their breakup. Rene was upset over the fact that Angela was the sole lead on this song, as well as her her writing and producing for other artists. Angela says that Rene became increasingly abusive over time. Tensions continued to mount until it all came to a head during an incident on their final tour together, where some kind of physical altercation took place. Both would embark on solo careers soon after.

Born in Queens, New York, she got her start in the groups Shades Of Love and High Fashion, the latter of whom scored a Top 40 on the soul chart in 1982 with "Feelin' Lucky Lately". Meli'sa would eventually go solo, starting off with a song that was originally recorded by Prince for his 1981 album Controversy. Born in Oklahoma and raised in Newark, New Jersey, she got her start singing commercial jingles before moving to writing for artists like Ben E. King, Angela Bofill, and Roberta Flack. Her lone Hot 100 entry came with this song, which also topped the dance chart as well as the charts in New Zealand and Zimbabwe. Sadly, Gwen passed away in 1999 from uterine cancer.
