5. On My Own - Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald

Written and produced by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager, "On My Own" was the biggest hit for both Patti and Michael, topping the Hot 100 in the US as well as the charts in Canada and The Netherlands. It would go on to become Billboard's top soul song for 1986. Reba McEntire covered the song in 1995, taking her version into the Top 20 of the country chart.

It was first recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1985 and intended for her album Friends, but ultimately wasn't included.

3. What Have You Done For Me Lately - Janet Jackson

After her first 2 albums saw minimal success, Janet knew she needed a change. She would soon find it after meeting with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The result was her breakout album Control. The first single, released 35 years ago this week, would become her first Top 40 and first Top 10 hit on the Hot 100. It also reached the Top 10 in several countries, including topping the chart in The Netherlands and Zimbabwe. The music video features the choreographer Paula Abdul, who at the time was also the head choreographer for the L.A. Lakers.

"Kiss" was Prince's third single to top the Hot 100, and fourth to top the soul chart. It was also a worldwide hit, reaching the Top 10 in 10 other countries. The song nabbed Prince a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Duo Or Group. It was notably covered by The Art of Noise and Tom Jones 2 years later.
