5. On My Own (2): Even though our radio stations in Peru weren't playing much of this type of Soul/R&B stuff, this song did receive some airplay. It made the top 10 of my personal chart, too. I've grown to like it much more with time. I love the melody and how Michael and Patti complement and harmonize well with their strong vocals. Even the doses of melisma is not too much to tun me off. The production and beat are the right type of sexy for me --sexy and not boring. I liked a couple other songs a tad more, but I added some points for being much more "Soul" to me than those ones.
4. Nasty (11): I appreciate the importance of this song for Janet's career, the iconic "Ms Jackson if you're nasty" and all, but as a song I've never been with a big fan (it barely made my personal top 25). In the Pulse JJ RD, it was my #25.
3. What Have You Done For Me Lately (6): This was my #18 in the JJ RD instead, and made the top 15 in my personal chart in 1986 --and I've liked it more with time.
2. How Will I Know (3): This is in my top 5 WH songs ever. A huge hit in Peru in '86, which is easily her song with most recurrent airplay. I love the melody, the happiness that it exudes and transmits to me every time I hear it. It's a pure earworm! The melody is great, too, and the production still sound timeless to me --with the bass and sax sounds, especially. (Btw, I didn't know Cissy sang background vocals or that it was first designed to be for Janet. Wow!)
1. Kiss (1): Another hit back home, also a personal chart-topper, and one of my favorite Prince songs ever. The instrumental, melody, vocals, vibe, all work perfectly to me. Catchy, fun, enticing and not overly complicated. Great winner in this RD.
Great extras by the way, although I'm baffled at how some songs charted in the Soul chart (?!!). A few songs that reached the top of my personal chart and I like as much now:
- Typical Male
- Human (soul?!)
- Dancing On The Ceiling
- When I Think of You
- I Can't Wait (I didn't know the popular version was a remix)
- Rock Me Amadeus (soul??!!!!)
Interesting discoveries:
- A Little Bit Of Love (very nice! much better than Mr. Telephone Man)
- Crazay (cool jam! of course very Prince-like but with its own strengths, including thanks to Sly)
- He'll Never Love You (good to know he also had this dance jam and not only boring ballads
I like this!)
- Once Bitten Twice Shy (another nice jam, with a cool modern timeless beat and great vocals)
- I'm Not Gonna Let (You Get The Best Of Me) (this was a jam! downloaded already, thanks!)
- King Holiday (I didn't know Whitney did this... a bit of a mess, but had some nice melodic parts, including Whitney's and Stephanie's)
Some songs that made my personal top 10:
- The Sweetest Taboo
- When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going
- Living in America
- Greatest Love Of All
Some songs that I wasn't that much into back then, but now I am:
- Crush On You (I slept on it unfortunately)
- Is It A Crime (a bit too slow/jazzy for my child ears then, but I rediscovered and loved it in the late 90s)
- All Cried Out (I had barely heard it, to be fair, but I rediscovered it thanks to Allure and loved it)
- Overjoyed (a bit too slow back then, but
- Victory (I found it a bit underwhelming / generic for K&TG, but I've grown to like it)
- Talk to Me (well, I only discovered it a couple yeas ago, and I really like it)
A couple of familiar songs that I've never been too much into:
- Saturday Love (I like the beat a lot, but the recitation of days of the week in the chorus is cringe!)
- Love Will Conquer All (I just found it a bit too boring)
- Go Home (I kinda like the beat, but melody is very meh)
