I don't understand why Billboard is treating this newer version of Oh Santa! (as well as the new mix of AIWFCIY) from the TV special as separate tracks? I listened to both, and they are just remixes in the same vein as Savage, Say So, Dynamite, or countless other remixed songs and last-minute artist tack-ons in order to boost chart placement. The lyrics/melodies/instrumentals aren't significantly different to warrant it as a "separate" song (so in the same fashion, a hypothetical remix of RATCT with Mariah wouldn't chart separately unless it were dramatically altered). It seems like an arbitrary decision by Billboard, or something that the labels and/or artists would have pushed, which seems like it could both help and hurt them, as it would take away points for a higher position, but it would guarantee credit for Ariana and J. Hud if their version didn't outperform the original.

^Perhaps the label requested as much. Also, the original Neither AIWFCIY or OS is a current/recent release, which could push the decision in the direction of counting them separately.

I think it has to do with the time that has passed since the original versions. These aren't remixes of a 'current' song. If The Weeknd recorded a new version of "Earned It" it would be seen as a new single, whereas because "Blinding Lights" is still current a remix is still counted with it.

Just my two cents... I think maybe because Bieber's AIWFCIY (feat. Mariah) is not a remix but considered as a cover version? It's like "The Only Exception" by Glee will not be combined to "The Only Exception" by Paramore.

The Only Exception was the example I used because I remember Glee's version and Paramore's orig version charting simultaneously and separately on the same wk on Hot 100.

Yeah, if Kygo and Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It" remix had charted on the Hot 100 (did it make Bubbling Under?) I'm pretty sure it would have counted as a new entry for Tina and not as a re-entry of the original song.

Well that’s what happened with Higher Love. Although I guess that’s also a cover and a case where Whitney’s original version didn’t chart? Either way I agree that the Kygo version of What’s Love Got To Do With It would probably have been counted as a new entry (it got all the way to number 1 on the Bubbling Under btw).

Yeah the original Higher Love was by Steve Winwood. Whitney's version had never previously been released in the US so it was new either way.
