I’m going to be going out of chronological order a bit for our next two albums as I wanted to switch things up. Good Time would’ve been in line as our next modern album, but given the overall length of it (17 songs) I’ve decided to hold off on that one for now and will be pairing it up with another album.

With that said, the next two albums to be featured were released ten years apart and will include Alan’s fifth studio album, Who I Am, which was released in June of 1994 as well as his twelfth studio album, What I Do, which was released in September, 2004.

Who I Am was Alan’s first album to consist of 13 tracks and includes the Number One singles “Summertime Blues”, “Gone Country”, “Livin’ on Love”, and “I Don’t Even Know Your Name”, and the top 10 hit “Song for the Life”. I’ve long thought of this as one of Alan’s strongest efforts that is solid from beginning to end.

Released ten years later, What I Do produced four singles including the top 5 hits “Too Much of a Good Thing and “Monday Morning Church” featuring Patty Loveless on background vocals. While this was the first album of his career not to produce any #1 hits, I consider this to be one of his more overlooked and underrated albums as its full of great songs.

I've set the deadline for Sunday, July 11th which should be enough time to knock out the first album for sure. As always, y’all will have a bit more time to complete the second album in this set so don’t feel as though you have to do both of them all at once.

Who I Am & What I Do even the titles play nicely off eachother!

What I Do is one of my favorites from him as I really enjoyed the album tracks here.

Who I Am is one of his most consistent in terms of quality and among his best albums though I don't visit it as often for some reason. Still very familiar with the entire thing though haha

Lmao tim you always manage to reveal an entire Alan album whenever there is a specific pocket of time when I am not on Pulse 😂 It cracks me up! I feel like this has happened every set, which is wild considering how much I am usually on Pulse!

"It's Just That Way" isn't a bad song, but what a joke that this was the lead single I didn't want to put it in last place, but the rest of this album just proved to be too strong! It pales in comparison to the rest of this album, just like it pales in comparison to all of Alan's big hits.

I liked "The Best Keeps Getting Better" a lot, but it felt the least "essential" out of all the album tracks here, so it was an easy bottom 3 for me.

I agree that "Every Now And Then" feels like it was robbed.....but then again I only put it at #9! It's just insane how quickly this album gains strength once you take an ax to the two singles!!

"True Love Is A Golden Ring" just has such a singsongy melody!!!! I cannot get this one out of my head!! Might be a bit too campy to stand out among the very best album tracks from this album, which is why most people had it in the middle of their lists rather than at the top or bottom, so I'm not super surprised to see it finish where it did.

Oh good, I'm pleased that "Hard Hat And A Hammer" didn't overstay here!!! This song is alright, but it just feels so basic compared to most of the album. It is an ode to the working class, which is a staple in country music, but it does so in literally the most pandering way possible. It's like the label was going for an easy hit here, but took a gamble on overlooking actual quality in favor of brainless buzz words like "God bless the working man", and the gamble definitely didn't seem to pay off quite like they hoped it would.

"I Could Get Used To This Lovin' Thing" pretty much exists to serve the exact same function as "True Love Is A Golden Ring" in my opinion. Both are simple, catchy, and memorable, almost in a sort of campy way. But I love them both, and can't get them out of my head!!!

"Till The End" undoubtedly got some traction out of Lee Ann Womack's name as well. Personally I find this one to be rather sleepy. Still really good! Like, given the choice between "Hard Hat" and this one, I'd choose this in a heartbeat! But between "Till The End" and "True Love Is A Golden Ring" or "I Could Get Used To This Lovin' Thing", I would choose the catchy uptempo. And y'all know I'm not the type of person to shit on a ballad and mindlessly love uptempos. I just genuinely feel that this one is not very memorable, which does not work in its favor on an album as loaded with catchy hooks as this one is!

I agree with those who feel that "That's Where I Belong" is the weak link of the top 5. I do think it's pretty catchy, but I personally think it was the weakest of the catchy uptempos. (At least of the album tracks. It was still miles better than "Hard Hat", lmao).

I am so happy to see "Big Green Eyes" do as well as it did here! It was agonizing trying to pick a #1 on this album, having everything be based on 3-4 listens because I wasn't familiar with it prior. There were sooooo many amazing melodies that I really enjoyed getting to know! After a few listens though, this was one that I kept coming back to. That chorus melody is pure ear candy, and I agree that it sounds like it would have been a smash hit! To me this has a sort of timeless sound to it, where it could have been an amazing song at any point in the last 30 years regardless of who sang it. It could have gone to Tracy Byrd, George Strait, Josh Turner, Tracy Lawrence, Randy Travis, Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, or any other number of male artists and been just as great! Of course Alan knocks it out of the park, so I'm glad it came from him :)

If I had done prediction questions, "After 17" was the one that would have been my guess to win this thing. I knew it was a bit of a fan favorite going into this. I can totally see why 🌺CountryLineDancer said the chorus melody was jarring, because I felt the same way at first. It's almost like it switches into a minor key that you are not expecting, and it definitely doesn't hit the ear smoothly if you're not expecting it. However, unlike him, this one grew on me significantly throughout the submission process! I feel that the minor key in the chorus gives it a really unique personality on this album that is full of catchy major uptempos (seriously, how often do you hear a minor uptempo?!), and it does start to sound better once you're used to it. I kinda wish it could have held onto the top 2, but then again at least it should get another chance to flex a bit in the album tracks rd!

I definitely expected "Freight Train" to be more polarizing than it was! I could see the repetition in the hook being annoying to some, and figured it would place somewhere more in the middle of the album as a result. Still, this is a jam, so I'm not disappointed to see it do so well! (Just realized this is an uptempo in a minor key as well!)

"Taillights Blue" was definitely one of the standouts here, so I am happy to see it win! I preferred some of the uptempos more, but this was definitely my favorite ballad/mid-tempo on the album!

The rankdown for Who I Am just happens to coincide with its anniversary as it was 27 years ago today that it was released!

Howdy y'all! I'm just now catching up with Pulse after entertaining family during the holiday weekend and in turn I missed doing a one week reminder for this. So, I'm going to go ahead and do that today giving everyone ONE MORE WEEK which gives y'all a few more days as the original due date would've been this Sunday. That means everyone now has until this time next week, Wednesday, July 14th, to work on Who I Am. While it does contain a few more songs than the usual 10, there were five singles released from it which I think most of the group are familiar with.

As for What I Do, I do ask for y'all to work on them simultaneously as we'll be moving onto that one in short order upon completion of Who I Am. That said, I'll still be giving everyone an additional week after that to work on it.

Exiting first is “If I Had You” which comes in as our third least polarizing song. This actually picked up its highest rankings from the first three lists as myself, ClevelandRox, and George Strait Junkie all put this in our top 10. That was enough to move this one spot shy of the top 5 which ended up being its highest peaking position of the rankdown. It was downhill after that though as it picked up its first of two last place rankings from Kanenrá:ke. From then on out it would remain in the bottom 3 before settling to the back as it picked up a second last place ranking from gardyfan.

I'm disappointed but not all too surprised that this was one of the first songs out. This is a simple song with a rather subdued production and I've always loved both Alan's vocal on it as well as the acoustic slide guitar.

“All American Country Boy” is our next song to exit in the bottom 3 and comes in as our fifth most polarizing song. It remained down in the bottom 3 for all but a split moment when it managed to sneak into the top 10 thanks to a near top 5 ranking from Kanenrá:ke . It quickly fell to the bottom of the list as it picked up its first of five last place rankings from someguy who was then joined by kw9461 , castleoblivion26 , bboat11 , and 🌺CountryLineDancer . This was able to sneak out of its last place position thanks to two additional top 10 rankings from Cody Wants Out... and Kris Kringle .

Despite my bottom 3 ranking, I do enjoy this song if I'm in the right kind of mood for it and admittedly think it's also a tad bit catchy. Even still, I think I'd probably move this one down a notch into my bottom 2.

And in case y'all are wondering what Cody Wants Out... is referring to, track #13 was omitted on the back cover of Who I Am and below Alan said "That's right folks, I am just a tad superstitious." I thought I'd have some fun with that and do the same for this
