We drank all the wine And we burned all the candles to the ground We danced to every dance they played till silence seemed to be the only sound And I could've sworn not long ago The sun was only startin' to go down But when did all the stars Fade just like the moon? And how'd it get so late so soon? 16. “So Late So Soon” Track: #13 Songwriters: Scotty Emerick, Daniel Tashian, Sarah Buxton Total: 159 Average: 13.25 Std Dev: 5.59 {Songs Remaining} A Man Who Never Cries Back I Can Be That Something Livin' on Empty That's the Way Love Goes The Boot The Older I Get Things That Matter Way Down in My Whiskey Where Have You Gone Where Her Heart Has Always Been Where the Cottonwood Grows Wishful Drinkin' Write It in Red You'll Always Be My Baby

Sad! This was easily the best song here imo.
ETA: This was referring to my #1 loss.

With the exit of “So Late So Soon”, we've now lost the majority of the songs that come towards the back half of the album. While this started out down inside the bottom 3 thanks to yours truly, it managed to leap into the top 10 thanks to a lone top 3 ranking from Darkest Hour followed by another top 10 from Kanenrá:ke. As the rankdown continued, though, it slowly began slipping back before finding itself outside of the top 15 altogether. There really was very little middle ground to this song it seems as the group either seemed to like this song quite a bit or not at all as only Kris Kringle fell somewhere in the the middle of that lol. While it did manage to pick up three additional top 10s from taylor is terrified, .indulgecountry, and castleoblivion26, it also picked up just as many bottom 5s. This is one of the few songs from the album that I actually began to feel a bit more ambivalent about each time that I revisited it. I initially had this a bit higher on my list and with each subsequent edit it seemed to find itself lower each time.

Good evening, y'all! I'm going to go ahead and dive into the next five songs which will in turn get us to the top 10 songs from this double album lol. Leaving first is one of the most polarizing songs as it racked up a top 2 ranking as well as a last place.

Written as a joke in response to Justin Timberlake's song "SexyBack", the next song to exit is in fact "Back" which also clocked in as our fourth most polarizing song. While only a few from the group fell somewhere within the middle, the overall theme from the rankings is that you either like this song or you don't. This bounced around quite a bit early on from the top 10 all the way down to the very bottom of the list as it picked up a lone last place ranking from Darkest Hour. It bounced right back into the top 15, though, thanks to a top 2 ranking from Kanenrá:ke. That was short lived, however, as it yet again was sent to the back of the pack. It would eventually settle back into the top 15 where it would mostly remain for the duration of its run. While it did manage to pick up an additional top 5 from .indulgecountry and one more top 10 from Cody Wants Out..., it also picked up just as many bottom 5s including a pair of bottom 2s from someguy and taylor is terrified.

Both of the next two songs are tied in points (this being our second). The tiebreaker really could've gone either way, but I ended up giving it to the song with the lowest standard deviation if only because the other song happened to pick up a lone ranking for last place.

“I Can Be That Something” exits next and maybe much to the surprise of some was also an early contender for the bottom 3. It wasn't until the middle part of the rankdown where it picked up its first of five top 10 rankings and from there on out it remained solidly within the top 15. It did look as though this could possibly get as high as the top 12, but a lone last place ranking from bboat11 sent this back a couple of spots of which it wasn't able to recover from. That's despite a final top 5 ranking coming in from Kris Kringle who joined castleoblivion26 there as well. While this did manage to pick up one additional top 5 ranking from the next song of which its tied in points with, I ended up selecting the song with the lowest standard deviation of the two if only because this song picked up a last place ranking.

First recorded by Johnny Rodriguez in 1973, “That's the Way Love Goes” was most notably covered by the late Merle Haggard whose version y'all are likely familiar with as it become his 30th number one single in 1983 and won him a Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Alan had wanted to record a song of Merle's in tribute to him, so this album gave him the perfect opportunity to do just that. This is the first song to exit thus far that also maintained its top 15 status for the duration of its run as the majority of the participants ranked it as such. Only three participants overall placed this in their bottom 5 with three others ranking this inside their top 15 which included a top 5 from gardyfan.

“A Man Who Never Cries” was actually inspired by fellow country artist Caylee Hammack as both her and Alan recorded "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good" in tribute to the late Don Williams. Caylee had sent a rough track of the song to her dad back in Georgia and she was caught off guard that the man she had never seen cry before began to tear up. She shared this story with Alan who in turn wrote this song about that experience. Despite starting off as our initial song in last place thanks to yours truly, it vaulted up into the top 12 where it would remain for the duration of its run. In fact, for the better half of its time it remained just within the top 10 as it picked up four if its ranking from there. That included a top 5 from Cody Wants Out... as well as a top 2 from Darkest Hour. Unfortunately, an additional last minute ranking in last place from Kris Kringle came along which pushed this back outside of the top 10. While I went back and forth as to which song to designate as my last place, this one was always well within the bottom 2 or 3 on my list and is just one that I don't feel compelled to revisit. It's rare that I find myself outside of the consensus from the majority, but this just isn't a song that connects with me.

Missing the top 10 my only a mere two points, “Where the Cottonwood Grows” exits nexts and along with it takes a second #1 ranking this time from someguy. It picked up just enough top 10 support overall to keep this hovering at or near the top 15 for much of its run. That also included one additional top 5 from bboat11 which in fact came in the form of a top 2. Only three participants placed this down inside their bottom 5.

“Where Her Heart Has Always Been” is the first song to bow out in the top 10 and along with it takes not one, but two #1 rankings from bboat11 and Kris Kringle. The song was of course written for Alan's late mother, known affectionally as Mama Ruth to all of her friends and family, who passed away in early 2017. This had a bit of a rough start, however, as it picked up its one and only bottom 5 ranking from George Strait Junkie early one which happened to also come in the form of a last place. Despite it picking up a couple of near top 10 rankings after that, it would remain regulated to the bottom 5 up until the middle part of the rankdown as it picked up it's first top 5 and a runners-up ranking from castleoblivion26. It again settled back some, though, when it got hit with back-to-back bottom 5s from someguy and .indulgecountry. While the rankdown was winding down, however, both bboat11 and Kris Kringle came along with a pair of #1 rankings which vaulted this back into the top 10 and at the same position it started off at. All in all, this managed to come in as the most polarizing song from the album!

Despite briefly sneaking back into the bottom 5 early on in its run, this more or less was a consistent top 15 contender otherwise. That early dip came thanks to a head-scratching last place ranking from Kanenrá:ke. In fact, both him and Kris Kringle were the only two participants not to rank this somewhere within their top 15 altogether. While a few of us placed this just shy of the top 10, it did pick up a handful of support from there which included a top 3 from taylor is terrified as well as a top 2 from .indulgecountry.

“Way Down in My Whiskey” is the first song from the album to exit that not only didn't have any bottom 5 rankings, but also maintained its status as a top 10 contender for its entire run. Only two participants in fact ranked this just shy of their top 15 while half of the group ranked this within their top 10. That included a pair of top 5s from both George Strait Junkie and Kris Kringle. This remains one of my favorites and go-to songs from the album. I went back and forth on including this in my top 5 and in the end it was left just outside of that.

“Write It in Red” is now the second song to exit which maintained its top 10 status throughout its entire run. It did, on the other hand, manage to pick up a long top 5 ranking from gardyfan while the rest of the group ranked this somewhere within their top 15. Actually, the majority of all the rankings were well within the top 10 with someguy placing this in his top 3 and taylor is terrified putting in their runners-up position. Of all the songs from the album, I admittedly was quite intrigued as to how this one would do as I became to view it as one of the standout tracks. It seemed like the more I listened to this one the more it ended up getting stuck in my head and I'd have to go back to give it another spin lol. Very glad to see that this song seemed quite well-liked across the board.

This rankdown is completely all over the place, and not in a good way. 🥴 Yeah, overall there really didn't seem to be much consensus as the rankings were a bit across the board for most of the songs. That certainly makes "Write It in Red" an outlier for sure.
