Yeah the only huge hits that had complete flop followups are ones where the artist never really made an impact themselves. For example, βSomebody That I Used to Knowβ and βRudeβ. Oliviaβs credibility extends beyond βThat Girl Who Sang Drivers Licenseβ.

In Gotye's defense, has he even released anything at all after STIUTK?

In Gotye's defense, has he even released anything at all after STIUTK? He had several singles after STIUTK, nothing got pushed commercially though. And aside from a live album from last year he hasn't had a studio album since 'Making Mirrors'. He's supposed to be working on a new album now though.

No way the follow-up completely tanks. Look at Lil Nas with "Panini". Even Robin Thicke got a minor chart hit with the follow-up to "Blurred Lines" although to be fair I forgot it's name and don't care enough to look it up. I donβt think Robin Thicke is a good comparison. Heβd been an active musician for over a decade at that point.

While we're on the subject of a follow up, may I suggest these two gems?

I think sometimes songs become so big that they cross the perceived boundaries of genres into formats they might not have otherwise. Plus, Iβm betting audiences that listen to rhythmic radio also listen to this song so it probably isnβt harming the playlists by having it on there.

There's been so many posts about this being on Rhythmic. Yes it's a Pop song but it's beyond huge right now. I don't care for the song at all but went back and sampled it and I can see why it may get a little love from Rhythmic..

This happened with "We Belong Together" and "Uptown Funk". I think they even charted on Latin radio.

How is this on the rhythmic chart?! There are a number of markets where either a Mainstream CHR doesn't exist or its ratings are weaker than average, so the Rhythmic becomes the default Pop station and playing more of the pure Pop makes sense for them.

hot damn. a monstrous hit if I ever seen one. is this the fastest debut single to reach top 10? Forget debut, this is one of the fastest rises to the top ten ever. It debuted in the top 50 on the January 17th chart. Tonight will mark only its third week in the top 50. f**king wow. Others with similar speed (in the PPW top 50 era): Lady Gaga - Born This Way (2 weeks) Taylor Swift - Shake It Off (2 weeks) Taylor Swift - Bad Blood (2 weeks) Taylor Swift - Look What You Made Me Do (2 weeks) Britney Spears - Hold It Against Me (3 weeks) Justin Timberlake - Can't Stop the Feeling (3 weeks) Katy Perry - California Gurls (3 weeks) Eminem - Just Lose It (3 weeks) [I'm still shocked by how quickly pop latched onto this.] Mariah Carey - Fantasy (3 weeks) Ed Sheeran - I Don't Care (3 weeks) None of those are debut singles. Those are all hyped releases from already well established A-list radio darlings. The closest debut single I could find was "I Kissed a Girl" in 5 weeks.

At a quick glance, that and "Vision of Love" seem to be the closest, both having reached the top ten in their fifth week in the Top 50. Edit: Alicia Keys' "Fallin" and BeyoncΓ©'s "Crazy in Love" also reached Top 10 in their fifth week. Edit: OneRepublic's "Apologize", also in its fifth week.

I'm just so happy I like this. It would be very annoying to not like it lol.
Come to think of it I've enjoyed all the huge inescapable songs the past couple years (Old Town Road, Circles, Blinding Lights). The last one I really disliked was Shape of You.
Also we really need that second Gotye hit. Manifesting. I mean if Mike Posner can do it...

So what I took away from this was god damn Taylor you have 3 songs that only took two weeks to hit the top 10 on pop radio and Olivia Rodrigo is following her footsteps here too on top of the songwriting.

How about the number of days that those songs took to enter the top 10? I know LWYMMD took like 6 days.

Olivia had no mercy for "Diamonds", damn.
But jokes aside this is clearly going to bulldoze it's way to #1. Justin needs to hurry up with those lackluster songs if he wants to spend a week there because I could see this getting there and staying for a while really soon.

god, I love this song. The lyrics are so relatable. At least to me. π The bridge is very Lorde though. And the idea of a Filipino get a #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 (Olivia's father side was of Filipino descent) was truly incredible and proud! π΅ππ π₯° I didnβt know she was part Filipino, I feel like artists from the Philippines or of Filipino descent donβt see much attention in North America. I donβt know why. I hope that changes because every Filipino person Iβve met has been kind, hardworking, and all around amazing.
