Gonna be one of the closest weeks for number one in a while. Between Cardi B's new single, Olivia's TV debut and still rising airplay, and Abel's Superbowl Show and the Greatest Hits album, this will be one of the strongest Top 3's (possibly Top 4's) we've had in a long while

Yeah, as far as main rap boys go, the only ones who truly push the envelope visually are probably Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott. Drake has his fair share of memorable music videos too - "Hotline Bling" is already a classic, and "Nice For What" is one of my personal favorites. "The Box" and "ROCKSTAR" were pretty good as well.
But otherwise, jewelry/cars, flexing, and women as twerking decor are the go-to, unfortunately. So I understand the sentiment of the tweet.

I get the sentiment of this tweet, but huh? Are male rappers meant to do choreographed dance sequences in their videos, too? And don't male rappers thoroughly dominate over female rappers when it comes to streams, sales and hits? I dig the idea behind it, but the tweet was probably best left in the head of whoever posted it. You understood the sentiment of the tweet but then proceeded to say this?? Ok.....

MoneyBagg Yoβs βTime Todayβ at #6 on AM currently. Good for him as it ties his Said Sum (Remix) peak so it's doing well for a follow up single. The video for it is nice as well.
Weirdly enough, on the topic of rap visuals, just as the new women are devouring every single visual aspect of their music nowadays (choreography, direction, outfits, theme/idea execution), the newer generation of male rappers are kinda stepping it up too which is great to see. DaBaby, Travis (not really new but his videos always go off), 24kGoldn are some mainstream examples. Even in the past few weeks alone 2021 has some great male rap videos ('Throat Baby (Remix)', 'Kanye Crazy', 'Bad Boy'). It's nice to see some improvements from the women/jewellery fantasy.
But yeah the tweet is right the men kinda pale in comparison to the girls even in the new gen too. Stream #UP!

I actually enjoyed "Up" on my first listen. πππ€ But the song is too generic, it's like Saweetie and Doja Cat rejects (yeah, it sounds like Bestfriends). And I feel like Cardi is doing this TikTok-friendly type of songs now (no hate, though). I will still be listening to it alot.

Are male rappers meant to do choreographed dance sequences in their videos, too? why not? Do they get too tired from the elaborate walking and looking tough act they usually do?

So far there hasn't been any effect on Apple Music for Blinding Lights or Save Your Tears. I think the possible return to number one will depend entirely on the Super Bowl boost

Why would there be though? I don't expect people to care much about a GH set with zero new songs. It's mostly a ploy for BB200 dominance to take advantage of the older hits' boost once he does the show.

Honorable mention to Juice WRLD too in the music video department. "Lucid Dreams", "Robbery", and "Lean Wit Me" were all excellent videos with strong imagery and perfectly conveying the tone of their respective songs.

Iβd get the Weekndβs collection if it were on vinyl. On streaming itβs pointless because I have the albums and playlists made already and I try to avoid unnecessary duplicates.

I know they are focusing on "Save Your Tears" and helping "Blinding Lights" get more records but I'm sure there were a couple of After Hours leftovers that could have made this compilation a bit more exciting.
Can't wait for his performance nonetheless! It's gonna be fun.

I'm interested to see for which album/s his label chooses to count the song streams from this point forward.

I mean, Usher and Chris Brown do choreo in their own videos all the time. If they can pull it off while singing, certainly there's at least one male rapper who can do it too (and no, Chris Brown rapping on occasion in his songs doesn't count).

Everyone saying they expect male rappers to do dance routines in their music videos obviously hasn't listened to rap music in a really long time.

Choreography for male artists mostly just fell out of style a while ago...
Itβs not like you see The Weeknd, Bruno, Bieber etc even doing real choreo in their videos for the most part despite having some dance abilities on stage.
Also to be real, Hip-Hop has never been a genre where choreo was expected. Simply expecting them to do it because you see Pop singers doing it would come off a bit awkward and inauthentic for most of them. Do you see Rock artists doing choreo either during music videos or performances? Country artists?
I think choreo in general is mostly seen as for Pop appeal. I feel like it would actually turn off lots of listeners in other genres to see them attempting to pull off choreo. I doubt Lil Wayne fans are begging to see him do choreography.
It works for female rappers because they have always had to sell sex appeal to a large extent. Meanwhile the fact male rappers *donβt* do choreo is part of their packaging appeal for their music. People like the street/lowkey/laid back image with them.

It's not a case for me, I'm a sucker for storytelling & supporting visuals viz. Cole, Nf, MGK... Y'all are right maybe not choreography then, but just effort and creativity. Women in hip hop are lapping men several times over in that regard. Which was the point of the tweet. It wasn't talking about sales/hits which are often not a good indicator of effort.

I mean as someone with a bit of background in dancing, I always appreciate good choreography in music videos but even still, I wish male rappers would try a bit more?
Or just hire good directors like Dave Meyers

I don't think the creator of the tweet was referring to choreography in particular, but as suzcruz7 mentioned, effort and creativity to create a visually compelling music video. Because let's be honest, it would look very silly to see some of the big male rappers doing elaborate choreography for their songs. It just doesn't suit their persona. There are exceptions like Drake, but most of them, like iHype. said, have a lowkey/laid back image. It's like the pop music fans who bash on male singer-songwriters like Ed Sheeran for being boring onstage. Would you want him to go full boyband-style for his next performance of "Shape Of You"? I can't even imagine how much he would be clowned online. π Anyway, female rappers are killing it right now, and they never fail to deliver exciting music videos. We also have male rappers who deliver highly unique music videos - Kendrick and Travis coming to mind. Others, not so much. But it was never a matter of choreography - that's for sure.

I know no one here is sexist in any way or trying to be harmful, but the idea that male rappers can't do choreo (or really, much of an effort with the videos), is a little short-sighted. Just because no one is currently trying to do it doesn't mean it can't happen. Which is what the original tweet implied. Meg and Cardi have been dropping killer visuals recently. Doja is very creative with the visuals, up to the live performances. Nicki has been on autopilot recently but she has at least a handful of memorable videos too. City Girls operate on a much tighter budget but they make an effort too.
As for raw streams and sales, it's not part of the equation here. Drake can literally go #1 without even shooting a video.

^not that they can't do choreo, but more a matter than I can't picture some of them doing it.
But even then, "Hotline Bling", Suge", and "BOP" showed that it can definitely be done, and to great reception.

DaBaby is the only male rapper right now who I think tries to give his videos flavor and personality by showing his sense of humor. Basically everyone else in his lane does the bare minimum so they can say they've made a music video. There's no sense of unique identity most of the time, you could swap out any of the songs and it wouldn't make much of a difference.

That's not to say that some prominent male rappers/hip hop artists haven't made great videos. The Box, Mood, somebody already brought up Drake in general. People in this thread are right, dancing definitely isn't a requirement for an interesting video. But it can help.
Sidenote "Up" has already started to grow on me - I think it's really fun. That ending is indeed weirdly abrupt tho lol.
