Tough pick #1. I really like HAIM, but this is not one of my favorites from the album (even with the Taylor remix). Collier was new to me, but I really like the jazzy chord progressions and chill vibes. 

Porter Robinson - “Look At The Sky” (Trilogy, #1) vs. Ward Davis - “Black Cats And Crows” (recordyear, #6)
Look at the sky is just a gorgeous song. Reminds me a lot of Postal Service back in the day, blending electronica with indie rock vibes. Loved the blusey riffs and piano with Ward Davis. Great southern rock vibe and the gruff vocals work really well here. Close call, but going with Look at the Sky.

Tell Me just didn't click with me. It was so short, I was waiting for something more. Mickey Guyton has a Miranda vibe. I liked the attitude and guitar work on this one.

Another two songs I'm loving right now. I'd be fine with either winning, but I'm going with the hometown Atlanta boys in Manchester Orchestra over No Rome. I just love the drive on this song. Great lyrics, dynamic song. No Rome is a solid bit of indie pop, but guitars for the win today.

Talker is a great discovery. I have a soft spot for 90s-era alt rock sounds, and this could go right along side Beabadoobee. Dua Lipa makes really good pop music, but rock will usually win out with me.

I gave Trey a listen, and it's a fine country track. But nothing was going to knock off my current #1 song of the year (so far). Great lyrics on the power of addiction in all its forms and the strength to keep going after failing. 

Lucy Dacus - “Thumbs” (peacebone, #1) vs. Taylor Swift f/ Bon Iver - “evermore” (Fire, #6)
The third member of boygenius looking to replicate the success of Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers lays out a beautifully devastating song. I never thought Taylor Swift would ever work so well working with the indie partners she has this past year, but her work with Bon Iver and the National has been inspired. Another tough choice of similar styles, but I'm going to give the edge to Taylor this time.

Christian brings the 90s-era R&B groove and some great seductive vocals (even if the song seems about anxiety). Kid Bloom has some nice harmonies and solid beat, but I found Toroka more interesting.

"Gasoline" is a jam. I don't think Taylor adds much to the song, but that also doesn't change my opinion that it's a jam. "Running Outta Love" has a nice bassline and definitely near the top of Djesse Vol.3 for me. I still prefer "Gasoline" but it's a pretty close call.

Porter Robinson has only been serving jams (I couldn't particularly get into "Mirror" but maybe my opinion will change when the album comes out and I listen to it in that context) this past year and this is no exception. "Black Cats and Crows" had a great ominous vibe to the music. Would've loved to vote for both.

The jazzy instrumentals in "Tell Me" is quite nice but the vocals aren't so great imo. "Salt" is quite nice, and it's different from what she's primarily put out with Bridges (think WAYGTH?, Black Like Me, Bridges).

I haven't had much exposure to Manchester Orchestra outside of "The Gold" and "The Grocery", so this is a bit different from what I was expecting (but who knows maybe that's their style?). "Bed Head" was good, I think it needs time to grow on me but it's a good start. "Spinning" is quite good too! It's a bop. Another matchup where I would've loved to vote for both.

"Gasoline" is an interesting novelty for being the most "rock" song Taylor has ever been on. She doesn't really add a lot, she just seems to add a few backing vocals because she really liked this song, but there's some nice harmonics that result, and the song is well-written regardless. HAIM probably isn't far from a true breakout hit, the question is when, not if. Though I'm sure if Taylor decided to join HAIM as their frontwoman the hits would happen much sooner than later.  "Running Outta Love" is a decent neo-soul track, I think I will be returning to it in the future, but the harmonies aren't quite as memorable as "Gasoline".

Porter's best song, a song that could very well be in my personal top 10 by year's end, versus yet another country tune. "Black Cats And Crows" is surprisingly decent to my ears actually, it gives off a gothic southern rock vibe and the "black cats and crows" imagery is effective, but "Look At The Sky" is still my preferred choice. That being said if "Black Cats and Crows" pulls off the upset I could see myself voting for it against different competition.

"Tell Me" was too short, it didn't leave any sort of impression outside of "is this an interlude track"? Mickey has the fuller song and the guitars are decent, but the sassy country gal vibe got a little overbearing.

I remembered first hearing Manchester Orchestra back when they released "I've Got Friends" in 2008, and while I still like that song, I wasn't sure if they were going to stick around. They actually did fade, and then came roaring back with "The Gold" in 2017, conveniently timed when I started listening to new music again. "The Gold" is a song that has deep meaning to me, and "Bed Head" takes similarly emotional, powerful lyrical content and marries it with a fuzzy alt-rock instrumental that wouldn't sound out of place on a Silversun Pickups album. Catherine Marks' production is fantastic on this, making sure that this still sounds like a Manchester Orchestra song despite the more intense instrumental, culminating in my favorite conclusion of the year. I love this song, it may be my top song of the year. "Spinning", with all due respect, had no chance of unseating my #1 pick.
