I was thinking about that with Lorde. Explosive choruses and infectious melodies for a first single (or even a single in general) as a requirement, I think is a relatively recent thing. Going back to the 90s for example, an artist could release a ballad or even something that wasn’t super catchy or immediate and it could do well. I think Solar Power has enough of a hook that, as the kickoff to a new era, it wouldn’t have felt like a weird choice then, but now it does. And I wonder if it’s on purpose that Billie and Lorde have released non-bangers as primary singles from their albums. They definitely add variety and mix it up a bit, even if it’s possibly to their own detriment.

Re: Everyone complaining about Butter being #1 again this week, keep in mind they released 2 more remixes at the start of this past tracking week, and even with those, I’m not expecting the gap between it and Good 4 U to be all that big. With no remixes coming out at the start of the new tracking week and the gap between the top 2 shrinking (not to mention Army prepping to save their mass-buying money for BTS’ album due next month), I think Butter’s weeks at the top are numbered.

Not to mention Ed Sheeran’s true comeback single will be out in 2 weeks with the top 2 only weakening, so there’s no way Butter will spend a super-long time at #1.

Keep in mind that this account has been the main one keeping track of order numbers and directs their viewers to several funding runs as they happen, so this is likely not a driveby audience, and in this case a third of what you’d need for said #1 push.

Absolutely - not sure it will be with those numbers though. Digital sales figures are very frontloaded, so I'd wait until the last few days to have a better idea of them.
