Rude to see one of her all-time best vocal performances ever put on record get tossed so soon...but I understand.

I am at "O Holy Night" not being a bottom 5 contender even once, when Pulse usually sends Christmas songs directly to the bottom! This one definitely has a lot of power among her fans, of course, and is considered to be the highlight of her new Christmas music based on the fact that it won the My Gift album rankdown. Personally, while "O Holy Night" is my favorite Christmas song, I have come to realize recently that I prefer the versions that have a teensy bit of tempo to them. So versions like Sara Evans' and Martina McBride's resonate with me a lot more. That being said, Celine Dion is like the all-time queen for this song, and her version is slow like Carrie's! Although tbh Carrie is a much less consistent vocalist than Celine Dion, so her version isn't done any favors by comparing it to Celine's...

"Favorite Time Of Year" bows out next, beating "O Holy Night" by a mere three points!! This song was released independently from the My Gift album on Amazon Music last fall, but within a couple weeks of the My Gift album, so I feel like it can be considered part of that album, lmao. It finished at #3 in the Christmas rankdown, but the John Legend duet "Hallelujah" was at #2 and it was kinda like the "single" of this era, so that's why FTOY ended up being included here!
I feel like this should have been included in the regular album tracklist, because this is such a nice surge of energy that that album was missing in my opinion! Anyway, this one will definitely be part of my regular Christmas rotation in the future, so I was really glad to see it do so well in the album rankdown! Although I do feel like it overstayed here in relation to a lot of her biggest missed hits...
My Gift is now the first album to be completely eliminated!

Carrie's debut Some Hearts sees its first loss next, as we lose the ode to Carrie's hometown, "I Ain't In Checotah Anymore". With this loss, .indulgecountry also suffers the first top 2 loss of the rankdown. This song was definitely a noteworthy member of her debut album when it was released, as her rapid launch to superstardom thanks to American Idol was undoubtedly one of the most incredible small-town-girl-goes-big-city culture shock moments that anybody has ever experienced! She literally became one of the most famous musicians in the business seemingly overnight, and it has never let up since then. It seems that she adjusted to the fame really well though, so today it is easy to take for granted how shocking this all must have been to her at first. To me this one has aged a bit poorly in comparison to much of her debut album for some reason. I think part of it is that so many artists have hometown songs that they almost always feel a bit like novelty songs to me. Still, it is a fitting song to have in this rankdown because of how it honors her pre-fame life, and it is undoubtedly an important song to Carrie because of that! Although seeing "That's Where It Is" and "Whenever You Remember" miss this rankdown felt egregious to me, so I would have definitely ranked both of those higher than this one. Some Hearts is easily my favorite album from her though, so I could have easily included 8 songs from it, but that wouldn't have been fair to all the other albums Lmao

Just like last night, we finish off this set of 5 reveals with a loss from Play On! I am honestly impressed by how well "Songs Like This" did here. This sounds like a song that would be highly polarizing in the context of her whole career, but then pretty easy to rank low in comparison to her all-time best album tracks. It got its fair share of high ranks here though, which helped it to stay afloat right on the cusp of the top 25!
I still fail to see why this one would be propped up so much on one album while a similarly fun song like "The More Boys I Meet" would be tanked mercilessly on another album, but clearly there is something about this one that some people really connect with!

Yassss, my attempt to goad you out of your cave proved successful! But to clarify, of course Carrie is consistent in the sense that she comes out night after night and puts on a hell of a show and always sounds just like the album if not better! But she is not consistent at all from the standpoint of vocal technique. That's why her belting can vacillate between being the most beautiful sound in the world on some songs ("How Great Thou Art") and the harshest, brassiest sound in the world on other songs ("Last Name") seemingly without any rhyme or reason. Her vibrato also has very little natural resonance to it, and as a result it is sometimes faster than Sara Evans and Dolly Parton when they're in full goat mode, and sometimes slower than Ray Price circa 2014, sometimes even within an individual song. She's also not consistent at all throughout her range, as she always forces her low notes to sound more guttural than they should with her voice type (which is usually where the super slow, forced vibrato comes from as well), but then her midrange sounds clear like a bell (and usually has her goat vibrato), and then her higher range starts to sound more brassy (and the vibrato also has a tendency to slow down again). She just happens to be a great enough singer to where none of that holds her back to a noticeable degree! (Also lemme just add that one of the things Celine is also more consistent about is lip synching, so apparently even Celine isn't quite as consistent as Celine 😂😂😂)

While I ranked 4 out of these last 5 songs higher, I'm not personally ofended by any cut yet lol Mostly because this was super hard for me to do, so I love the songs on my top10 but also love the songs that I ranked way below.
I'm just hoping my top3 songs make it to the top15 at least! - and at least two of them on the top10 maybe?

But we can agree that she's gotten better at it right? Her highest notes for years now have sounded incredible and imo not at all brassy. When she did those high falsettos during the "Just a Dream/Dream On" mashup on the Cry Pretty tour, it was crystal clear. Her final note during the opening EOTY medley at the 2020 ACM Awards didn't sound all that brassy to me either. Then again, I haven't paid close attention to vocal technique since I stopped trying to sing when puberty hit me at around age 14

Then again, I haven't paid close attention to vocal technique since I stopped trying to sing when puberty hit me at around age 14 Yeah, I would say she is getting better with regards to belting technique at least. The Sound of Music training undoubtedly helped, plus just years of experience There are admittedly several songs on her more recent albums where I'm like "Wow she sounds better than I have ever heard her before!" But it's usually when she injects a little bit of lightness into her vocals, like with "Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus". She's never really had "light" uptempos like that before, except for maybe "Do You Think About Me"! Although "Blood" doesn't sacrifice the use of her high range the way that DYTAM does I do think she still has a tendency to overdo the power a bit with the mid-range belting (that's one of the biggest reasons I wasn't as big of a fan of "Drinking Alone" as everyone else. To me the entire song is basically a wall of sound with no nuance), but the high belts lately have been heavenly!!!

"Backsliding" is an accurate title for that trajectory graph, yikes! Lmao 😂 This song started out as a consistent top 10 performer for about the first 1/3 of the rankdown, before the low ranks caught up with it and caused it to fall pretty harshly until it started to regain its footing again well enough to hang out in the 24-25 range.
I'm a bit surprised by this, honestly. This song has long been discussed like it's a fan favorite from Cry Pretty that people have wanted to see released as a single! For me personally this one has only recently started to grow on me a bit. I hated it at first, because it is like a major sonic curve ball after you get used to the smoky arena-rock vibe of "Cry Pretty", "Ghosts On The Stereo", and "Low". I found the melody to be monotonous and boring over an unnecessarily poppy arrangement. That being said, it IS starting to grow on me a bit, and I could have maybe even bumped my rank up by a couple positions.

"How Great Thou Art" was a very consistent contender in the 20-25 range! This song sees the loss of multiple top 2s from ccarter1023 and dgarcia3377 and a top 5 from Typo. This has some of the most incredible belting of Carrie's entire career I of course got swept away in the hysteria surrounding the live version with Vince Gill from a few years ago just like everybody else, and I am SO happy that she kept the arrangement largely the same for this studio version (albeit with an added second verse and chorus). Anyway, if you're ranking based on vocals this absolutely deserves a spot in the top 20! Realistically though it is hard to compare it to her regular music, so this placement makes sense. At least it outlasted the other two songs from My Savior by like 10 positions! With this reveal My Savior is now the second album to be eliminated, shortly on the heels of My Gift.

"I Just Can't Live A Lie" got off to a rough start due to most of its lowest ranks coming near the beginning. Like, so rough that it was a bottom 3 for the first 1/5 or so of the submission process! Fortunately it got its fair share of high ranks as well, including a top 3 from castleoblivion26 and a wall of #4s from myself, fireflies, and Cody Wants Out.... Those ranks all kinda cancelled each other out, so the fact that most of its ranks came in the teens and twenties averaged out to this #23 placement. This song has such an amazing melody!!! I seriously cannot imagine anyone having this lower than #20, lol. Granted, it's not the most egregious song from her first album to pick up some tankers.....

HGTA is phenomenal. She's the best to ever do it. It was SO hard to place it on my list. </3 I don't trust any of you with IJCLAL outside your Top 20.

Her debut album was so good. She could have released 7 country singles and I imagine radio and fans would have made each one a hit.

Jeepers, in case you didn't notice in the post, there's our first #1 loss!!!! toomuchboy is the unfortunate first victim to lose his #1, just shy of the top 20 :( "What I Never Knew I Always Wanted" is also our first loss from the Storyteller album, which means all albums have now lost songs! The countdown is now on to see which regular album is the first to be eliminated So far they've all lost songs fairly equally, which is nice to see! WINKIAW is a beautiful song honoring Carrie's first son, Isaiah, and her thoughts about having her first child and becoming a mother for the first time. It is undoubtedly one of the most meaningful songs from Storyteller in that regard. Still, it makes sense to me that this would be the first song from the album to leave, as it doesn't quite ooze hit potential the way that songs like "Chaser", "Choctaw County Affair", and "Renegade Runaway" did.

Oh look, let's continue the trend of losing a Play On song every 5 reveals!!! This time it's "What Can I Say", the duet with the totally well-known, super popular, record-breaking group........Sons of Sylvia Seriously, how'd a meager star like Carrie Underwood manage to land such a huge collaboration?!!?! In all seriousness, I really like the way this one builds! It's really pretty at the beginning, but it builds to some mighty belting that I can't help but crank up. Still, it was never really a top 20 contender, so I'm okay seeing it leave now. I personally don't really feel like there's anything in this top 20 that doesn't belong there, lol.
