I'm not worried. Unlike Olivia, Lil Nas X will pull just about every stop to get to #1, even if that means using website sales or doing a speech on vaccine awareness and then promoting Industry Baby at the end of it. After all, this is the same person that blocked Taylor Swift twice (ME! and YNTCD) from going to #1. The BTS #1 run is over!

Fetty's debut year was big, but it doesn't come close to Olivia. Fetty was pretty much a one-hit wonder. The funny thing is there was an artist that year that compares to Olivia. His name is Abel Tesfaye:
The Weeknd's 2015
Earned It #3 Can't Feel My Face #1 The Hills #1
Olivia 2021
drivers license #1 deja vu #3 Good 4 u #1
I guess traitor will be Olivia's In the Night?

Off topic but how tf are most people saying Fetty lol? I can't even tell how much more dominant Olivia has been compared to Fetty, especially worldwide. The difference is enormous Olivia is bigger, of course, when you just factor in numbers and the size of her hits and how big her album is but Fetty Wap was 100% more impactful culturally. Trap Queen was his debut single and that peaked at #2. That song was inescapable. Kids were yelling out "1738!" throughout 2015 because of him. His second single peaked at #4 and his third single peaked at #7 — all in 2015. That's super rare for a rapper. I think the last rapper whose debut single peaked at #2 before Fetty was Drake with Best I Ever Had. Many people forget that in 2015 the biggest songs were pop songs and the biggest artists were pop artists so Fetty Wap was an outlier. Fetty Wap was so huge in 2015 that Taylor Swift brought him out on her 1989 tour to perform Trap Queen. I'm not surprised most people who are rap fans and were there for Fetty's dominance don't think Olivia is bigger. If you don't watch the charts and you don't listen to pop radio, it's very possible for you to not even know of Olivia. Her songs are pretty much nonexistent with the urban audience.

Olivia's only been a household name for only 7 months while Trap Queen is 6 year-old at this point. Let's not shortchange her and be quick to say she isn't or won't be culturally impactful. drivers license and good 4 u still had over 5 million streams in one day and that stat speaks bigger than any chart could ever tell.

I think it's time for us to acknowledge that the Hot 100 is now the Hot 1 BTS song + 99 others

Exactly. She's only been out for 7 months (I wouldn't call her a household name yet) so why is anyone surprised at those responses? Many people still know don't Olivia or her songs. Her 3 hits, while huge, are POP hits. They're huge on POP radio and to top it off, she's yet to perform at any major tours/festivals to give added exposure. If you don't listen to pop radio and you don't watch the Hot 100/Billboard 200 charts, it's very possible you don't know who Olivia is so yes, while she's seen more success than Fetty did on the charts, culturally, his impact was way more than hers. Olivia still has time and her success will very likely last longer than his did so she's better off either way.

But it doesn't make any sense to compare the cultural impact of a 6 year old song to songs less than a year old. So it's waaaaaay premature to say Fetty Wap had more cultural impact than Olivia. I would hold off on that assumption.

All those people who are voting for Fetty were probably kids/teens when Trap Queen was huge and are now adults/graduating and thus are able to consume music separate from the pop culture zeitgeist. I mean when I was younger: every single vine song or dance hit that went viral felt massive and inescapable so who's to say that teens and kids now aren't experiencing Olivia the same way we did back with viral moments back in 2014/2015?

They also have different audiences, wouldn’t they? Just because they both did well on the Hot 100 doesn’t mean they shared the same audience. If we were to Venn diagram the songs on the Hot 100, there would probably not be much overlap amongst all the songs on there. (Meanwhile, the BTS circle would probably be completely isolated and separate from everything else entirely :kii:)

suzcruz7 the question is about their debut eras, not their entire careers, no? The people responding with Fetty Wap aren't being dishonest. They're speaking based on what they experienced. Most of them probably don't know Olivia or her songs but they knew Fetty's. I've already spoken of the disconnect that can happen when you don't listen to pop radio and keep a close watch of the charts. dremolus - solarpunk and that's good for those kids. Years from now, when they're asked who had more cultural impact, they can mention Olivia's name. How is that so hard to understand? Are you really surprised many people still don't know who Olivia is? Because it's the truth. She's been huge with ONE demographic and that's the pop audience. If YOU didn't listen to pop radio and you didn't watch the charts, you likely wouldn't know who Olivia was as well but those adults knew who Fetty was, so why is their response surprising to anyone? Also, calling Olivia a household name is inaccurate. She's well on her way but she isn't there yet just off the people who don't know of her or her music yet.

I must admit that I escaped much of the influence of Fetty Wap when he was biggest, and if it wasn't for the YE charts I wouldn't have realized how big he was.

This is the disconnect I mentioned and meanwhile for me, back in 2015, I wasn't nearly as interested in charts as I am now. I didn't even know the positions his first 3 singles peaked at on the charts. I just knew they were inescapable on radio and at all the parties and shows I attended.

Calling either of these three artists but especially Anderson .Paak "small" is funny considering he's been one of the hottest acts in hip-hop and R&B for the best 5 years and just last year, was on the soundtrack and voiced a character in a Dreamworks movie. I get he's not exactly a widely popular mainstream act but it's kinda like saying Wes Anderson is a "small" director because he doesn't make blockbusters. Just goes to show that charts isn't the only barometer of popularity or success.

Compared to top R&B stars (Beyonce, Weeknd, Frank Ocean, etc) they are far behind on most of the public’s mainstream conscience. That doesn’t mean they haven’t achieved anything or aren’t popular. R&B is my favorite genre and I’ve known all of them for awhile, so yes, I am familiar with them and don’t need a resume breakdown. This is moreso you just looking for an argument honestly. All 3 of them going top 10 on radio nevertheless simultaneously is pretty big for them and for current R&B to an extent which was the overall point of my post.

Does everyone need to be compared? Fetty was huge with his audience and Olivia is huge with hers. There isn’t really that much overlap. Essentially, when it comes down to it, this is a discussion about which audiences is more important and which is less important and that’s getting some side eye from me.

Isn't the question about "who's DEBUT YEAR was more dominant?" If that's the question then it's not even a question. We don't even have to discuss about impact or different audience because it's irrelevant.

Off topic but how tf are most people saying Fetty lol? I can't even tell how much more dominant Olivia has been compared to Fetty, especially worldwide. The difference is enormous I mean... just compare the backgrounds, Fetty was at a MTV event and Olivia was in the White House Stupid & racist take, get well 🙃
