In other news, seems like Hayley Williams & Josh Farro are now credited as a songwriters on Olivia's "Good 4 u". They will be getting 50% of the royalties... that's a lot I must say considering this is a huge hit. Good 4 them, maybe? that's interesting. the songs do sound glaringly similar.

that blurred lines lawsuit really did ruin songwriting credits for years to come, huh

I mean was it really necessary for Hayley and Josh to get credited as songwriters on "Good 4 U", Like was this done in order to avoid a possible Lawsuit? yeah….the songs are kinda similar, but enough to warrant a credit imo. Oh well, this is how it goes w copyright in 2021

Better to credit than to be sued for millions. If Sam Smith and Robin Thicke can be sued for songwriting credits, nothing says Olivia would be immune for an obvious influence.

^ I honestly doubt it. Beggin & IWBYS smashed simultaneously pretty much everywhere. Pushing IWBYS far after its streaming peak (when it feels like old news) is a bad move. They're teasing Teatro d'ira vol 2 so the follow-up will probably be from that

If I were Olivia I would have probably taken the Good 4 U thing to court. They sound similar as in "inspired by" or like how a lot of Pop songs sound similar, but it was not a "deja vu"/"Cruel Summer" thing where it sounds like the exact same thing in parts.

Evan Craft, Danny Gokey & Redimi2 - Be Alright (debut)
One nice thing about the astroturfed song getting removed is that this song was able to debut, so Evan Craft and Redimi2 were able to get their first charting entries. I really don't like the song, but still, good for them.

Isn't it Danny's second? This and You Are So Beautiful

Isn't it Danny's second? This and You Are So Beautiful You are correct. For some reason, accessing Gokey's Bubbling Under page via Google duplicates You Are So Beautiful, so I mistakenly thought there were three entries.

Nah, that wouldn't be a good move. She will miss out on some publishing revenue by giving them writing credit, however going to court would also be costly and time-consuming, and would bring a lot of negative publicity at this crucial point in her career where she is trying to establish her stardom, and the risk of losing is too great. Having said that, this does raise some questions about her originality as a songwriter, as this is now the third song on just her first album that have been deemed very similar to other artist's songs.

While I agree with you that taking this to court would be a highly risky and expensive affair, respectfully disagree in the merits of her "originality as a songwriter" whatever that means. Rregardless of what you think of Olivia, her art is hers and she should not be in trouble just because her influences are obvious. This isnt a case of Led Zeppelin admitting to intentionally stealing riffs from artists, this is a woman who grew up on Paramore and Taylor Swift and is making music similar to them. Olivia is just one of thousands of examples in both contemporary and classic music. Even an artist as brazenly in your face like Greta Van Fleet, Robert Plant was never mad about them being a copycat. All music has a lineage line to past works and no artist should be ashamed.

The songwriting lawsuits/credits are out of control IMO. Song has always been based in influence/tradition/borrowing. I think unless it's blatant stealing, let it go.

Even when it is blatant stealing I think it is far better to openly acknowledge one's borrowing and give credit to the ones one borrowed/stole from, rather than to hide it and pretend as if one came across that sound first.

At this rate, we’ll all have a songwriting credit somewhere on the album. Katy Perry about to get one for "brutal" since she says "teenage dream" in the verse.

Artist 100 - most weeks at #1
Dating to the Artist 100's inception, only three acts have spent more time at No. 1 than BTS: Taylor Swift (48 weeks), Drake (32) The Weeknd (22)
BTS (20)

Maybe in the US but I genuinely think that Levitating may not even be one of the year's five biggest hits globally It’s still top 10 on Global Spotify and it’s almost September… Future Nostalgia (the album) was already the 2nd most streamed album of 2020 globally. It’s nonsense to say that it’s success is at all US specific. It's not US specific but it's possible Levitating won't even be top 3 on IFPI's list of the best selling worldwide hits of 2020. Drivers License (probably), Good 4 u (possibly) and Save Your Tears (possibly) can all be ahead of it. When you add a song like Stay which seems to be massive during the last months of 2021 (like Closer), it's not weird that Levitating doesn't feel like top 5 biggest WW hit of the year. I think it's top 5 though

I know Mediatraffic is flawed, but on the latest chart, "Levitating" is #9 while "drivers license" is #38. Both are at about 6 million points. Remember that US is included in any worldwide tracking chart and there "Levitating" is still #6 while DL is out of the chart.
"Save Your Tears" on the other hand is above "Levitating" and has more points, so it will moste likely end up ranking higher. "good 4 u" is above "Levitating" as well and outgaining it, but it has less points than the Dua song as of the latest chart. It will be close between those two.
"Bad Habits" and "STAY" are current threads but they need to mantain huge levels for what's left of the year to catch up to the tracks mentioned above.

I mean was it really necessary for Hayley and Josh to get credited as songwriters on "Good 4 U", Like was this done in order to avoid a possible Lawsuit? Olivia keeps doing this and either she (and/or her team) thinks it's just the right thing to do or it's being proactive against legal action, but I worry that it sets a bad precedent. Surely there are songs that sound kinda like "Misery Business" that inspired Paramore, and so on... can't we just acknowledge that there's a finite amount of ways for a pop song to sound, and save the co-credits and legal stuff for actual copying? (Or maybe "Good 4 U" really does sound exactly like "Misery Business" and I'm the only person who can't hear it? who knows.)
