Two reasons I hypothesize this is the case: (1) The chart shift from back in 2017/2018 that was never compensated for via a 53-week year at any point from 2018 onward, and (2) Billboard does not have the staffing it needs to keep track of all of their charts' points on a weekly basis (not just the Hot 100, but also Albums, Artists, the Canadian Hot 100, possibly a Global 200 YE this year, etc.), so they have to run all the calculations over the following 3 weeks so that everything can come out in the first few days of December, adjacent to other music industry year-end rollouts such as Spotify Rewind.

And I absolutely agree with your statement - Billboard needs to make either 2022 or 2023 a 53-week year, or else they'll run into the conundrum of tracking periods starting and ending way too early, which was a problem a lot of the pre-SoundScan YEs had.

Every single weekly chart should be saved in a directory internally at Billboard, I would assume that is standard with a data reporting company. I really don’t think compiling Year End lists takes more than a few minutes (just combining data that’s already saved there). The computer just adds up every chart. And actually I wouldn’t be surprised if the Year-Ends were all building charts that are already updated each week throughout the year until the final chart.

Billboard’s tracking period at this point in 2021 seems bizarre. Sure they may want to get extra clicks from being one of the first publications to post a year end list, but regardless theirs is the only chart based year-end list so it’ll still serve its specific unique purpose, reserved headlines, and garner specific interaction based on that compared to a Pitchfork list or whatever regardless if its posted first week of December or later on.

I’m hoping it’s just one of those things they’re being stubborn with and will eventually change. Like the whole airplay tracking week being different or back when charts used to be dated a week ahead. They served purpose that don’t really matter in the current landscape. Billboard seems to bank majority of their website revenue from Billboard Pro and the BTS-bait articles which probably get more clicks than Year Ends anyways. I don’t think Year-End charts headlines get some huge special chunk of revenue. From what I’ve witnessed every year; even majority avid chart watchers who keep up with weekly charts don’t seem to care as much about year end charts. I don’t think they’re that big of a deal click/page view wise but I could be wrong.

I’m not sure about y’all, but when I used shorts, there is what essentially appears to be an ad system called a “featured short” or something, and it can pop up several times in one sitting, it happened with Shivers and Butter.

This brings up a good point for people who can't always separate the art from the artist, because certainly there are different levels of financial compensation one gives an artist by listening to or supporting their music. Streaming a song, or downloading it illegally, will of course give them very little to no money, however purchasing their songs or albums, buying their merch/concert tickets, etc., will of course give them much more money that would keep their career going and would more likely enable them to continue whatever problematic behavior listeners have a problem with.

I mean for me personally, it's never been about how much financial compensation an artist gets. If I'm not comfortable listening to someone, then that's that.

Yep, it's ridiculous that they have in the Wrapped app things like "You started the year with XXXX" and I'm like "yeah, ACHUALLY you missed the first two months since the previous wrapped"

I could listen to Ariana Grande for 2 months in a row and Wrapped could never tell I listened to her at all.

I get the frustration, but I also understand why Spotify does it this way. they want to give their users a look back at the actual calendar year, and they need time to analyze data and prepare to deliver that in late November/early December when everyone is in the mood to reminisce over the year they've had. like I'm sure Wrapped 2021 will include something about "drivers license" for a lot of people, for example. it just wouldn't make sense to remind people of what they listened to at the tail end of 2020, which includes Christmas music for so many, for a 2021 recap. if you're interested in tracking your own listening habits, I'd recommend signing up for last.fm and connecting your Spotify account (if you aren't using it already, as many regulars of this forum do).

on a separate note, I switched to Spotify in mid-September last year, and streamed Ariana on REPEAT the day her album came out (October 31). ended up with this:

You can allow a week to pass, but I am speaking currently about it. It has already lost the number one in a top ten that only has one song above 1,000,000 streams. That is not good, especially for a song that has banners and play listing galore. I am not basing anything on future wish casting

The year end discussion in a general sense always happens before the year actually ends. I’m not sure if people would be as receptive to hearing about their year in music listening on January 1. Though now that I type that, I think, Spotify/Apple Music could have totally made it a thing. But it would still feel a bit late given most music publications, tv, entertainment in general, and news does their year in review recap in December sometime.

It seems to be following the lead of LTDO (which was overshadowed by Drake during its first week), and that’s a good sign for its longevity. You never saw that with Skate, which had a strong debut then just fizzled.
