Ew so much bad taste coming at 2008… In addition to having a great selection of hits, that was such a huge year for the female eras (Fearless, I Am Sasha Fierce, The Fame, Funhouse, Good Girl Gone Bad, Circus, E=MC^2, Hard Candy, etc). 2017 had horrible hits in general (Shape of You, Despacito ruling over half the year alone) and was also a horrible year for women. To say 2008 was worse than a year like that is yikes. I have some thoughts on this. I would agree with you if A. most of those albums biggest hits weren't bigger in 2009 than 2008 (You Belong with Me, Most of The Fame, ect.) B. Many of the other albums you mentioned weren't (and this is just personally speaking) some of the lesser albums of their artists career. Like you cannot tell me that Mariah, Beyoncé, or Madonna were bigger or better in 2008 than during their peaks which were before or after 2008 with Beyoncé. C. I do agree with Britney as she was still VERY popular at the time, however this was after the whole shaving her head incident which at the time there was really nothing like it. In hindsight it's super sad, depressing and disgusting, but 13 years ago artist's mental health was not thought of in the slightest and in 2007/2008 Britney was basically a punchline. I'd argue nothing related to 2017 was "worse to women" than the entire Britney situation being treated like a joke. Thank God she's finally free, and we understand Mental Health better. D. I do agree, Shape of You is total butt and probably top 10 worst of the big songs of the decade but I don't get how 2017 was horrible to women overall. An argument could be made for 2018 with X and Kodak Black getting popular but those are really minor in the grand scheme of things. If anything, Praying becoming a huge hit for Kesha telling her tragic story is a good thing since it reminded everyone of how much of a massive waste of oxygen Dr. Luke is (plus the song is still incredibly powerful. So yeah Mariah, Beyonce, and Madonna dropped great albums that year. Not being their best albums or at the top of their discography /=/ they can’t be good albums. Also I wasn’t talking more about anything social related not sure how the discussion turned to that… specifically judging music 2008 was much better than 2017. Year End 2008: 1 "Low" Flo Rida featuring T-Pain 2 "Bleeding Love" Leona Lewis 3 "No One" Alicia Keys 4 "Lollipop" Lil Wayne featuring Static Major 5 "Apologize" Timbaland featuring OneRepublic 6 "No Air" Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown 7 "Love Song" Sara Bareilles 8 "Love in This Club" Usher featuring Young Jeezy 9 "With You" Chris Brown 10 "Forever" Chris Brown 11 "Sexy Can I" Ray J featuring Yung Berg 12 "Take a Bow" Rihanna 13 "Viva la Vida" Coldplay 14 "I Kissed a Girl" Katy Perry 15 "Whatever You Like" T.I. 16 "Disturbia" Rihanna 17 "Don't Stop the Music" Rihanna 18 "Pocketful of Sunshine" Natasha Bedingfield 19 "Kiss Kiss" Chris Brown featuring T-Pain 20 "Closer" Ne-Yo 21 "Bubbly" Colbie Caillat 22 "Touch My Body" Mariah Carey 23 "4 Minutes" Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland 24 "So What" Pink 25 "Paralyzer" Finger Eleven Year End 2017: 1 "Shape of You" Ed Sheeran 2 "Despacito (Remix)" Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber 3 "That's What I Like" Bruno Mars 4 "Humble" Kendrick Lamar 5 "Something Just Like This" The Chainsmokers and Coldplay 6 "Bad and Boujee" Migos featuring Lil Uzi Vert 7 "Closer" The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey 8 "Body Like a Back Road" Sam Hunt 9 "Believer" Imagine Dragons 10 "Congratulations" Post Malone featuring Quavo 11 "Say You Won't Let Go" James Arthur 12 "I'm the One" DJ Khaled featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne 13 "XO Tour Llif3" Lil Uzi Vert 14 "Mask Off" Future 15 "Unforgettable" French Montana featuring Swae Lee 16 "24K Magic" Bruno Mars 17 "Stay" Zedd and Alessia Cara 18 "Wild Thoughts" DJ Khaled featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller 19 "Black Beatles" Rae Sremmurd featuring Gucci Mane 20 "Starboy" The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk 21 "Location" Khalid 22 "Attention" Charlie Puth 23 "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" Shawn Mendes 24 "Bodak Yellow" Cardi B 25 "Redbone" Childish Gambino Also going by your logic I definitely don’t see any eras in 2017 where an artist was at their absolute artistic peak. Many of the big eras were by forgettable artists in general (The Chainsmokers, Shawn Mendes, Khalid, Migos, Imagine Dragons) or one of a good artists weakest eras… I’m going with 2008 easily! We are literally debating if a year dominated by Ed Sheeran, DJ Khaled, and Chainsmokers is better than another year…
