I wonder if the era would have fared better if she had been able to go the route that’s become more common now with minimal news and no pre-album singles. The hype was kind of there but the response to the singles weakened it. We saw it with other albums since. Billie Eilish is a good example because her last album probably had a similar reaction. It still did well but I wonder if that initial response to the pre-release singles is why they’re changing their approach this time. I think Witness is a good album but it’s not as conventional as we expected from Katy and doesn’t have the hits, but it was treated as if it did and that let people down. Sometimes less conventional albums need a non-conventional approach to promotion.

Sometimes less conventional albums need a non-conventional approach to promotion. I doubt it. Katy has always been more of a singles artist. Meaning, hits sold themselves and their parent album. The challenge of the streaming era is that too often the artist releases the album, fans stream it for a few weeks and then the era is over as no post album singles succeed. Surprise release would mean that Katy would only have one shot with a single (the first one, released along with the album) and even if that one became a hit, getting the second single to do anything would be extremely difficult. There is a reason why some artists (like Shakira) release so many singles before the album. They know the album most of the time signals the end of the era. Katy needs strong singles, that is all. Without them there is no point in releasing anything.

Yeah, Katy has always been the very epitome of a singles artist. Even Rihanna was able to shake that better than her. It would take something wildly critically acclaimed and “artsy” for her to suddenly be more of an album artist imo.

Was Beyonce considered a singles artist before 2013? I guess she always had acclaim and good sales, even with 4, but she dominated the conversation about herself with the 2013 album. Not to say Katy would have but I think Witness itself was a bit of a risk and it might have had better results if people went into it without any prior views. Though you’re probably right in that people don’t expect anything but direct pop from Katy, and probably didn’t want it either. The whole political pop angle or whatever it was probably didn’t help either since it wasn’t even true beyond whatever statement CTTR was trying to make.
Idk, I do feel like Witness deserved better than it got and I think it is criticized more than it deserves.

Mildly redacting what I said about nothing could’ve done any better than what CTTR did on Witness… was re-listening to the album and I think they should have put all eggs in the title track’s basket. That song is a super smooth listen with nice lyrical growth from her prior hits and a subtle hookiness that I think is a trademark of a lot of slow-burn big hits. Maybe a big second single push, great video etc to get a top 5 hot 100 and radio peak?
I will maintain my stance on the rest of the album though. Lmao at them actually trying stuff like Save as Draft and Hey Hey Hey as singles, come again?

From my first listen-thru of this album, I always thought pushing the title track second would've been the correct move. I especially thought the last scenes of CTTR seemed like they could have segued into a Part 2 video where Katy leaves Oblivia and looks at the world with fresh eyes as a video to this song.

Yeah, that sounds great. The little whistling outro in the song is particularly infectious and really drills the core melody into your brain

I thought of a fantasy mini-film/visual album for Witness that I don't think would've gone well at radio, but would've been a cohesive theme.
Chained To The Rhythm Witness Mind Maze/Deja-vu Dance With The Devil Power Bigger Than Me Pendulum

I am literally praying for Katy/Gaga to come and shake things up in the music industry. Might be a pipe dream, but god, we need some pop bangers and effort lol.

Pretty presumptuous statement at this stage in her career. She thinks it will be "Dark Horse"/"Roar"/"ET" level successful? I'm perched!

This album better be 25 songs or something because it is taking an awful long time. Feel like she's been talking about it for almost a year already lol.

Summer smash incoming? I feel like it will debut during or directly/shortly after the Idol finale.
Not to keen on how she said it'll be her biggest hit or whatever (sounds like a potential self set-up) but looking forward to it nonetheless.

I don't understand why people get *so* crazy over someone else's hair. I mean I get in a deep way it can be rooted to identity and the way we perceive someone, but people are just ridiculous. The bob looks phenomenal on Katy and she shouldn't be made to feel as if she can't switch up her look. We get bored folks! Anyways looking forward to hearing what she has for us!

I actually do get the feeling she can have a real comeback with this era with the right song. Like if she puts out an NRO tier bop, I could see it exploding. The main reason being that back in 2019/2020 with the NRO/Smile rollouts, it was a matter of her being in a bad place where, for lack of a better way of saying it, she was basically a “washed up” pop star in the public perception. But 5 years later, I think she is officially at the point where there’s genuine nostalgia for the TD/Prism eras. Enough time has passed for that. She can use that to her favor massively this era if she hits the marks on lead single and promo.

And to this day there are those who will tell you that’s why she lost her success during that time (I wish I was joking). So that’s probably many of said people having a meltdown over her cutting it again.

Honestly she built her career prior to that on her Lolita hottie image and suddenly she had awful hair. It clearly had an impact on her brand. And we keep talking about it so it did leave a mark...
I still think the music is what didn't connect that time but the hair thing didn't help.
