I guess the 2022 has been a slow year for certifications of recent songs and maybe some haven't bothered to pay RIAA for it yet: yeah I mean Harry's House literally debuted with 521,000 Billboard SPS units (which roughly translates to 506,000 RIAA units), and that's without including all the sales and streams "As It Was" racked up before the album came out. yet it's not on there at all. pretty sure it's been eligible for Platinum for over a month now. RIAA needs to be automated already. it's such a useless system waiting for people to apply and pay fees. kinda like how filing taxes is a pain in the ass here when the IRS already knows what you owe or are owed.

I don't know if it's telling of me or how miserable this year is that outside of RUTH (which is also the only hit this year I've actually found myself dancing to), the only other hits worth I've cared about have been an upbeat sounding song that's actually about how numbing it is to cope with depression and suicide, a indie country song about a relationship that may or may not even be worth fighting for, and another depressing piano ballad. I'm don't usually think like "the politics of the day directly influences what's popular" because the past 6 years have also been s**t but there've still been upbeat songs I've found fun and dance worthy, it's still ironic to think about. But then again when the "upbeat" hits this year include Bam Bam, Sunroof, Get Into It (Yuh), Late Night Talking, I Like You, Big Energy, any of the Encanto songs that were hits, maybe it is fine just listening to the sad songs than forcing myself to pretend to be happy and listen to any of those songs again. I would def say the charts were boring the first few months of 2021. But if you are still complaining even though we now have Drake, Beyonce, Lizzo , Jack Harlow and a dominant Harry being thrown into the mix, along with an unprecedented revival of βRunning up that Hillβ then Iβm afraid nothing is going to satisfy you. The charts have not been this vibrant in a long time. On top of that, this is the most efficient Iβve seen radio in a very long time. They are reacting quickly to everything hot and trending. All the streaming hits are huge radio hits and Vice versa, at a much more rapid pace. Even βRunning up that hillβ is now a huge radio hit. If anything, I am really happy with how all fronts are moving at this point. Yes βHeat Wavesβ is there and itβs annoying, but Iβm not surprised. The song is stream bait for weather moods, which for whatever reason have longevity (I call it the βSweater Weatherβ effect). I wasn't talking about chart movement. I was talking about the quality of the songs on the charts.

It'd be awesome if Kate or Lizzo were #1 or #2, I don't care. As long as Harold is #3, I'm sick of As It Was.

The big story this week, somehow bigger than 4th of July or Cardi B's comeback single, was Metallica's 1986 classic being rediscovered thanks to what else, the season finale to Stranger Things. Tis marks the two firsts in the streaming age: the first time that a metal song was the biggest debut and the first time a Metallica song was the biggest debut. At 8:35, it is also the longest song to have massive streaming since the 10 minute version of All Too Well.
The finale also boosted Running Up That Hill by 23%, hopefully being enough to nab the top spot.
Beyond that, You Proof gained 19%, I Ain't Worried continued up momentum with a 22% rise, Rock and a Hard Place rebounded 12%, but the biggest gain came for Betty (Get Money) which rocketed up a whopping 61%
4th of July Boosts: Party in the U.S.A. - 49% Chicken Fried - 53% Everybody Wants to Rule the World - 12% Pass the Dutchie - 7% Dreams - 14% Tennessee Whiskey - 12% Don't Stop Believin' - 13%

Oh, there's a lot of 2022 albums/singles that need to be certified.
The RIAA needs to offer a "buy one cert, get one free cert" sale. LOL

LOL There are a ton of older albums that need recertification too. The 'Grease' soundtrack was last certified at 8x platinum in 1984 but it has sold more than twice that. 'Purple Rain' was last certified at 13x platinum in 1996 but should be around 17x platinum now. Some artists/labels don't pay for the re-ups and their certifications are ridiculously outdated. Maybe the RIAA SHOULD give them a BOGO deal lol

It's just how they operate, it's a non-profit organization but I'd imagine they still wouldn't be able to make enough money if they automatically certified everything without labels having to pay. But yeah it's really mind-boggling how some labels are so slow or completely negligent in certifying albums. The cost cannot be so prohibitive that it would outweigh any positive press or bragging rights from receiving higher certifications. Unless it's some obscure, defunct label or something that really doesn't have the money, but those would be a very small number of cases I'd imagine, and most records that do well enough to reach certification levels in the first place are on the majors anyway.

This will be our top 3 for some time, right? Considering Ghost, Heat Waves, and Stay are still in the top ten I bet one or two of the current top three will still be in the top ten in 2023.

UK goes directly off the Official Charts Company (OCC is the UK equivalent of Billboard/Nielsen/MRC/Luminate, compiles their numbers and also compiles their chart) data and numbers for certifications, that's why they are automatic.
RIAA is outdated and goes off store shipments, numbers sent to labels from streaming services, etc. They do not go off of Billboard/Luminate numbers. They require audits for the numbers (costs a few hundred dollars per cert only) since they are not directly from one source, which is why certifications aren't automatic.

Since 'shipments' aren't much of a thing anymore, I wonder if we can get to a point where the RIAA uses old certs as a base and then has automatic updates using the Nielsen/MRC/etc data. I know for certifictaions, labels can either submit lifetime consumption or consumption since last certification when applying for a new cert. For some albums the RIAA has "on hand" data (this mostly depends on what was submitted back then and also the release date), but not for all. For things certified more recently, the consumption since last certification could potentially happen automatically.

About the UK, certs are automatic for post 1994 releases.
Anything before that, the label has to start the certification process.
RCA just certified 8 Gavin Degraw albums/singles. Good for him, but what about Britney Spears, P!nk, Justin Timberlake, Usher and Kelly Clarkson? Each have 10+ singles that need updating.

Labels make it the responsibility and financial burden of the artist's teams/management to request certifications. Obviously those artists can afford a few thousand dollars for updating certifications, but when it becomes their own team's responsibility and their team does not care they won't be updated. Beyonce's certifications were all updated through 2009-2010 when her father was her manager still (he was very industry driven and always made her promote, made sure she had radio hits, etc), then in 2011 she fired him around the 4 era, started doing things her own way, and none of her 2011 music has been updated since lol. Drake's certifications were all mass updated in 2018, then in 2019 he officially left Young Money once his contract expired and now releases his music under his own label and owns his masters. He hasn't certified a single song this entire decade. Britney is practically retired and her 'team' (does she even have one at this point?) is people she doesn't even talk to so her certifications are probably never getting updated.

^Same with Adele? She left XL and her album/singles have not been updated.
21 should be 16xP. 25 12xP. 19 4xP.
Rolling In The Deep is 8xP, but should be 13xP. Hello is 7xP, but should be 12xP. Someone Like You is 5xP, but should be 11xP.
That's 3 Diamond singles she could have.

i mean, certifications don't mean anything anyway now.
Platinum means...you have x # of streams and y # of sales, with x and y varying widely.
"Sold a million copies" is a concrete achievement so it made more sense before to bother to apply for certs.

It means you have moved the equivalent of one million units.

^^Yet the RIAA G&P program is more popular than ever. Some weeks 30+ singles/albums are certified.
Doja Cat Just certified 22 singles/albums.
Bruce Springsteen certified 17 albums/singles in May.
Eminem certified 64 albums/singles in March.

Is that a Cruel Summer revival Iβm seeing? Is that becoming a new July 4th staple? Because if so, hereβs your daily reminder that it should have been the lead single for Lover

It would definitely be cool if Master of Puppets debuted this week. It would be Metallica's first song in the Hot 100 in over 13 years and would stretch their charting there to over 32 years.

Speaking of Master of Puppets, itβs predicted to be #25:

There is nothing hip hop about Break My Soul, and that is not even true. Kendrick Lamarβs album performed way better on the Spotify charts than the Apple ones. It just depends on the artist. Hot s**t is surely a top ten, though Of course it depends on the artists and there's no one clear cut rule. But historically, Hip Hop artists tend to perform better on AM than Spotify. There will always been outliers and exceptions to the rule. I will actually note Cardi may be the exception to the rule because she does not just appeal to the hip-hop demographic but the pop audience, as well. The better comparisons would be Cardi's prior AM / Spotify numbers to see where she's higher.Hip hop is the most streamed genre on Spotify, and that is from the companyβs own statements, so what are you even arguing?

Insane to think of the prospect of Metallica being the ones to knock Bad Habits off the Hot 100 for good this week lol (yes, I know Cardi's new song is helping too)
Speaking of which, we should also see MAMIII go recurrent this week.

"Sold a million copies" is a concrete achievement so it made more sense before to bother to apply for certs. It seems like this is becoming more the case, otherwise artists and their teams wouldn't be so lax in certifications. Even though it's supposed to comprise "equivalent album units" or "equivalent song units," I agree that it's confusing and hard to conceptualize combining two different things, streaming and sales, into one number. It's odd because in the days of pure sales, things seemed to be the opposite, when labels would kill for higher certifications, often over-shipping albums upon release and even bribing or forging phony sales numbers.
