Just a reminder y'all, I counted and there's only 18 songs with at least 20 weeks on the chart so I don't think we need a shake up. And thatβs certainly lowering given Bad Habits is probably going recurrent next week and several others are probably going recurrent in the next 10 weeks or so because of either the BeyoncΓ© album bomb or the 52/25 rule (Super Gremlin, Shivers and Thatβs What I Want are in the first group, Cold Heart, Ghost, and Woman are in the other.) Woman will be gone after it inevitably gets its 52nd even without an album bomb. One other song I can see going recurrent if an album bomb is strong enough is Stay.

I guess the 2022 has been a slow year for certifications of recent songs and maybe some haven't bothered to pay RIAA for it yet: yeah I mean Harry's House literally debuted with 521,000 Billboard SPS units (which roughly translates to 506,000 RIAA units), and that's without including all the sales and streams "As It Was" racked up before the album came out. yet it's not on there at all. pretty sure it's been eligible for Platinum for over a month now. RIAA needs to be automated already. it's such a useless system waiting for people to apply and pay fees. kinda like how filing taxes is a pain in the ass here when the IRS already knows what you owe or are owed. there we go

I thought Meghan Trainor's Bad For Me would be on the Bubbling Under chart. Hopefully, it will enter the Hot 100 next week. It is one of the best songs I have heard from her in a long while. She is deserving of another entry with this song.

Stay seems to be dying out finally, it's all the way down to #16 this week even without an album bomb. It's really at this point where any large album bomb could swipe it off the chart.
Honestly the whole chart desperately needs to be cleaned, the Top 50 is filled with old ass hits from late last year/early this year like Shivers, Cold Heart, Woman, Super Gremlin, etc. I don't remember our veteran hits holding on this deep into summer last year, just Blinding Lights and Heat Waves (lol).

Metallicaβs βMaster of Puppetsβ Hits Hot 100βs Top 40, Rules Rock Charts Thanks to βStranger Thingsβ Sync Plus, the band's greater catalog gains thanks to renewed interest sparked by the song's spotlight in the Netflix series.
BY KEVIN RUTHERFORD
MMetallicaβs βMaster of Puppetsβ soars onto Billboard charts dated July 16, as do other tracks and albums from the metal legendsβ lengthy discography, thanks to the songβs sync in the fourth season of Netflixβs Stranger Things.
βMaster,β originally released on Metallicaβs 1986 studio album of the same name, makes its first appearance on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 at No. 40, marking the rockersβ first time on the chart since βThe Day That Never Comesβ wrapped its run in November 2008, after reaching No. 31 that September.
In the July 1-7 tracking week, βMasterβ earned 9.6 million official U.S. streams and sold 7,000 downloads, according to Luminate. Those sums reflect vaults of 603% and 3,722%, respectively, over the previous frame. The final two episodes of Stranger Thingsβ fourth season premiered July 1, with the song helping shape a pivotal sequence involving the showβs metalhead Eddie Munson (played by Joseph Quinn).
βMasterβ concurrently becomes Metallicaβs first No. 1 on the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart (which began in 2020), exceeding the No. 4 peak of the groupβs βAll Within My Hands,β with the San Francisco Symphony, in September 2020. βMasterβ also arrives at Nos. 4 and 6 on Hot Rock Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, respectively, also new peaks for the band on both surveys.
The stream count for βMasterβ sends Metallica onto the Streaming Songs chart, at No. 23, for the first time, dating to the tallyβs 2013 inception. It also starts at No. 1 on Hard Rock Streaming Songs (which began in 2020), eclipsing Metallicaβs previous No. 6 best last September with 1991βs βEnter Sandman,β and opens at No. 3 on Rock Streaming Songs.
The download sum for βMaster,β meanwhile, places the track at No. 7 on Digital Song Sales, becoming Metallicaβs first top 10 (surpassing its prior No. 18 best in 2008 with βDayβ). βMasterβ enters Hard Rock Digital Song Sales at No. 1, Metallicaβs fourth leader, following βSandman,β βOneβ and βHardwired,β and starts at No. 3 on Rock Digital Song Sales, tying the groupβs personal best first achieved with βSandman.β
In more βMasterβ news, following the songβs reservicing to radio by Blackened/Q Prime (the track did not reach a radio chart upon its original run in 1986), it bows at No. 33 on Mainstream Rock Airplay β especially notable given its eight-and-a-half-minute runtime. Itβs Metallicaβs 39th entry on the chart, a haul that includes 10 No. 1s and 24 top 10s. On the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, it starts at No. 48 with 631,000 audience impressions. βMasterβ becomes the first song from its parent album to make a Billboard radio chart, as Metallica first hit Mainstream Rock Airplay in 1989 with βOneβ from 1988βs Master follow-up β¦And Justice for All.
Speaking of Master, it returns to multiple Billboard album charts, led by its No. 3 re-entry on Top Hard Rock Albums, with 13,000 equivalent album units earned, a leap of 254%. The LP also lands at No. 14 on both Top Rock & Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums, and its No. 55 re-entry on the all-genre Billboard 200 spurs the setβs first appearance on the chart since February 2021. Master peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard 200 in May 1986 following its release that March.
As one might expect, the Metallica catalog as a whole sports residual gains thanks to the resurgence of βMaster,β much like that of Kate Bushβs music following her own Stranger Things sync for βRunning Up That Hill (A Deal With God)β earlier in the season. (βHillβ returns to its No. 4 Hot 100 high on the latest list.) According to Luminate, Metallicaβs overall official U.S. on-demand streams tallied 36.6 million listens July 1-7 β a 64% boost from 22.3 million the week before; taking βMasterβ out of the equation, the total still shows a hefty 30% gain for the bandβs catalog, from 20.9 million to 27.3 million.
The most-streamed Metallica song beyond βMaster of Puppetsβ in the July 1-7 tracking week was βEnter Sandman,β which boasted 4 million streams, up 19%. βFor Whom the Bell Tollsβ (2.5 million, up 39%), βOneβ (2.1 million, up 34%) and βNothing Else Mattersβ (2.1 million, up 14%) rounded out the groupβs top five for the week. βSandmanβ jumps 9-6 on Hard Rock Streaming Songs, while βBellβ debuts at No. 24.
Additionally, βSandmanβ reaches Hard Rock Digital Song Sales (No. 4; 1,200 downloads sold), along with βMattersβ (No. 7), βBellβ (No. 8), βOneβ (No. 19) and βThe Unforgivenβ (No. 25).
Finally, Master isnβt the only Metallica project on Top Hard Rock Albums, with the bandβs 1991 self-titled LP rising 7-6 (10,000 units, up 25%, good for Greatest Gainer honors) and 1984βs Ride the Lightning re-entering at No. 12 (6,000, up 53%). The former also flies 173-109 on the Billboard 200.
As for potential further Stranger Things chart achievements, a premiere date for the seriesβ fifth and final season has not yet been announced.

I don't remember our veteran hits holding on this deep into summer last year, just Blinding Lights and Heat Waves (lol). This week, we have 18 songs past 20 weeks. 77 - Heat Waves 54 - Bad Habits 52 - Stay 49 - Woman 44 - Cold Heart 43 - Shivers 42 - That's What I Want 41 - Ghost 37 - Big Energy 35 - Super Gremlin 34 - Wasted on You 33 - Enemy 31 - Get Into It (Yuh) [26 - Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)] [6 in this run] 24 - Circles Around This Town 24 - Flower Shops 23 - Numb Little Bug 21 - Boyfriend Last year on this same week, it was... 83 - Blinding Lights 48 - Mood 47 - My Ex's Best Friend 40 - Levitating 37 - Forever After All 31 - Without You 30 - One Too Many 30 - Save Your Tears 26 - Best Friend 26 - Drivers License 25 - Heat Waves 22 - Glad You Exist 21 - Astronaut in the Ocean 21 - Calling My Phone 21 - Heartbreak Anniversary 15 songs. The big thing is how the 40+ weekers doubled between years, but still, 4 songs with that status in 2021 is nothing to sneeze at.

Last time that three songs had reached at least 52 weeks in the Hot 100, it was for the January 22, 2022 Hot 100 dated chart. Heat Waves reached 52 weeks that week, while Levitating 62 and Save Your Tears 54. All three songs continued to chart for 15 more weeks, after which Save Your Tears finally dropped out. At least this time around, Bad Habits is likely to drop out soon and the most weeks I can see any of the songs past 20 weeks charted (for now) is 52 weeks, starting with Woman.

Here are the songs since 2010 that were still charting at this point in the year and had also made the previous year's YE.
2022: Heat Waves (#8, 2021 YE #16), STAY (#16, 2021 YE #12), Bad Habits (#25, 2021 YE #15)
2021: Blinding Lights (#15, 2020 YE #1), Mood (#36, 2020 YE #47)
2020: Circles (#13, 2019 YE #62)
2019: Happier (#25, 2018 YE #80), Eastside (#36, 2018 YE #77), SICKO MODE (#44, 2018 YE #42)
2018: None (This was Drake Decimation Week - if you use the previous week's chart there was Rockstar, 2017 YE #56, at #33, and Havana, 2017 YE #96, at #39)
2017: Closer (#36, 2016 YE #10)
2016: None
2015: Shake It Off (#50, 2014 YE #13)
2014: Counting Stars (#29, 2013 YE #63)
2013: Ho Hey (#36, 2012 YE #68)
2012: Party Rock Anthem (#49, 2011 YE #2)
2011: If I Die Young (#31, 2010 YE #92)
2010: I Gotta Feeling (#49, 2009 YE #4)

Itβs not the number of songs with over 20 weeks thatβs a problem, itβs the lack of entries/movement into the Top 10/Top 25. Bad Habits staying at #25 in Weeks 53 and 54 proves that, as well as Big Energy moving back into the Top 10. Donβt forget that Go Crazy (a song people wanted to go so bad) had more charting points than BH during those weeks, but went recurrent without a 53rd week because the charts werenβt as horrid as they were today.

Bit random, but is anyone else being force-fed "Sweetest Pie" by Spotify? I haven't heard that song in its entirety since it came out, but it's the first automatic play after EVERY song I play of my own volition. I only hear it for the time it takes me to look up another song, then once that's done, it's back to "Sweetest Pie" again. Is this normal?

I just switched to Spotify actually and noticed. Weirdly, when I was using Apple Music, the first autoplay song on most playlists was nearly always "IDGAF" by Dua.

Is this normal? this used to happen to me with "Baby" by Madison Beer and then "Baby I'm Jealous" by Bebe Rexha, lol. I ended up having to block Madison Beer to make it stop. I think Spotify plays songs it thinks you might like based on the song/playlist you last played, or songs you've already listened to before a few times. when I did this with my current playlist, the songs I got were: "Words" by Alesso & Zara Larsson -- already in the playlist "Vitamins" by ELIO -- used to be in the playlist, still in my liked songs "That's Where I Am" by Maggie Rogers -- already in the playlist "Persuasive" by Doechii -- already in the playlist "The Vibe" by Amorphous & Bree Runway -- in my liked songs

Average weeks spent in the top 20 by songs in the top 20:
2010 - 9.5 2011 - 9.1 2012 - 9.6 2013 - 9.4 2014 - 10.1 2015 - 10.5 2016 - 10.2 2017 - 10.3 2018 - 9.8 2019 - 12.7 2020 - 12.2 2021 - 12.6 2022 - 15.3 (so far)
Also, the first quarter of this year had the highest average ever, by far (18.2). The next highest are 2019 Q3 (13.4), 2021 Q4 (13.0), 2021 Q3 (13.0), and 2020 Q2 (13.0).

I think Spotify plays songs it thinks you might like based on the song/playlist you last played, or songs you've already listened to before a few times. I know that makes sense - I like Dua, I like Meghan, I listen to their respective music, so it's natural that Spotify should push their duet. But I don't care for that particular song and never listen to it fully or have it on any of my playlists. I've noticed on Instagram that if you don't tap on people's stories they get pushed further down your feed; I would imagine Spotify would have something like that to maximize engagement ("ok, they're not listening to this one, let's give them something else"). But no, they keep forcing the same song on me and I'm not interested in hearing it. It's not a big issue at all, and even kind of funny, but what the hell?

Hot Sh*t doesn't seem to be taking off fast enough for a #1 debut, and even a top 10 debut isn't guaranteed. Apple Music is always the best indicator for first day performance for Hip-Hop. It's 3 PM EST (15 hours post-release) and still not top 10. Other 2022 releases: Do We Have a Problem? - reached top 10 at 10 AM EST Break My Soul - reached top 10 at 12 PM EST Plan B - reached top 10 at 2 PM EST There is nothing hip hop about Break My Soul, and that is not even true. Kendrick Lamarβs album performed way better on the Spotify charts than the Apple ones. It just depends on the artist. Hot s**t is surely a top ten, though Wellβ¦

Hot Shit is almost reminding me of Sweetest Pie... huge collab that on paper is a smash but in practice underperforms pretty hard (but is still probably big enough to end up being a hit)

Sweetest Pie and ADT are literal examples of never to judge a song by its initial first week(s) of chart performance.

Both ended up being moderate hits and making the YE despite being underwhelming by the standards of the artists involved, but that is something that can only be revealed when one is well into a chart run.

Sweetest Pie and ADT are literal examples of never to judge a song by its initial first week(s) of chart performance. I would say Sweetest Pie's debut would go on to be very indicative of its overall performance. It had a moderately big debut, #15, moderate reception (at best) in terms of quality, and then going on to be just a moderate hit, spending a dozen weeks in the top 40 and will most likely leave the overall chart after 20 weeks.

Really, we need to gather a list of songs and compare the initial reactions to the eventual outcome. I do feel that, while there are exceptions, (ADT), the initial reactions to a songβs eventual performance tend to be mostly accurate to some degree. It would be interesting to have a definitive comparison list though.
