20. Disco Lady - Johnnie Taylor

The lead single from his album Eargasm, "Disco Lady" was Johnnie's debut single for the Columbia label. It turned out to be his biggest hit, topping the soul and Hot 100 charts and was the first single to be certified platinum by the RIAA, which at the time meant it had shipped over 2 million copies. The song also garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Billboard named it the top soul single for 1976.

"I'll Be Good To You" was the first charted single by brothers George and Louis Johnson, and the lead single from their debut album Look Out For #1. It's their biggest hit, topping the soul chart (their first of three) and reaching the Top 5 on the Hot 100. It would reach the top again thanks to a cover by Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and Chaka Khan. Their version finished at #24 in the 1990 rankdown.

14. Walk Away From Love - David Ruffin

As a member of The Temptations, David Ruffin sang lead on such classics as "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg". His biggest solo hit came with the release of "Walk Away From Love" in the fall of 1975. Produced by Van McCoy, the lead single from his album Who I Am topped the soul chart and reached the Top 10 on the Hot 100.

David passed away in 1991 following an accidental overdose of crack cocaine.

13. Wake Up Everybody - Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

From their album of the same name, "Wake Up Everybody" turned out to be the end of an era for Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. It was their final #1 on the soul chart, their final Top 40 hit on the Hot 100, and was one of their final singles with Teddy Pendergrass. Following Teddy's exit, the group left Philadelphia International and continued to chart into the '80s.

"Wake Up Everybody" has been covered numerous times since, including a 2010 version by John Legend and The Roots which featured Common and Melanie Fiona.

"The Rubberband Man" was the second single from their album Happiness Is Being With The Spinners. It was about the son of producer and co-writer Thom Bell, who was teased about his weight. The song was the sixth and final soul charttopper for The Spinners, and peaked inside the Top 5 on the Hot 100. It was also their last single to feature vocals from Philippé Wynne. He wanted to change the name of the group to Philippé Wynne & The Spinners, but when the other members refused, he left to pursue a solo career. He was replaced by John Edwards.
