See, but Uzi wasn't out by that point in time, so I don't think they count. Sam has already had two hits while being openly nonbinary, (Dancing With A Stranger, How Do You Sleep) but this is likely going to be not just their first #1 while being openly nonbinary, but their first #1 period. It's kind of crazy that the biggest new releases this week are all from queer artists. Sam Smith, Kim Petras, and Lil Nas X.

Also it's funny how we all were like can LNX challenge for the #1, and then well um... But like seriously tho, I did not have Sam Smith or Kim Petras potentially getting a year end list hit with only 6 weeks left in the year on my 2022 bingo card. This is wild.

I don't think Unholy is gonna debut at #1 unless it has a radio deal that hasn't been activated yet or the sales and streaming hold better than I expect. I do think it's locked for the Top 3, and the point gap between AIW and Bad Habit will mean that this will all be remarkably razor-thin.

If the Sam/Kim song debuts at #1, that’ll be a very odd feat for Kim. There are plenty of artists whose first single hit #1, but I’m trying to think of any artists who were active for years, including charting on other charts, without hitting the Hot 100 — and then suddenly debut at #1.

The closest I can think of is probably Janet Jackson, but that’s still not the same. She had 2 Hot 100 (non-top 40) hits before the Control era, but it wasn’t until her 3rd single from Control that she hit #1.

Scratching my head to think of other examples.

The closest I can think of is Olivia Rodrigo. All I Want only peaked at 90 and only had 2 weeks on the hot 100. Then Driver's License debuted at #1.

I think the most hilarious thing if Unholy reached #1 is the fact it’s the polar opposite of Sam’s music that they’re known for.

A bunch of safe family-friendly AC ballads mimicking Adele, yet their first #1 is a Kim Petras collab for clubs talking about raunchy behavior.

It’s like if J. Cole got his first #1 doing a Country song with Luke Combs.

In strict terms, I'm not sure anyone has debuted at #1 after charting on other charts but not the Hot 100. Did Chance the Rapper hit the Hot 100 before that song with DJ Khaled debuted at #1?

Childish Gambino had Hot 100 entries prior to "This is America" debuting at #1, but what was his highest peak to that point? I don't think he had any top 10 to that point did he?

Of course plenty of artists have charted for a long time before finally getting a #1. Aerosmith even finally got their first #1 with a song that debuted at #1. Nicki Minaj didn't wait as long as them, but finally got a #1 with a #1 debut.

based on a quick search, sam smith is the only popstar in the streaming era who led a top 2 on both the Hot 100 and the Billboard 200, but has 0 Hot 100 #1s. so it would be cool for them to change that ig

Literally 2 weeks ago the top 3 was Harry/Lizzo/Steve Lacey, and 1 week ago it was Harry/Steve/Harry -- so no it wouldn't be the first time.

And again, this discussion is kinda weird/rude because it just practically assumes the sexuality of thousands of other artists from prior by alluding this all a first time thing in 2022. It also potentially erases any previous LGBT artists getting success prior just because they weren't open with their sexuality, or perhaps they were open and you just aren't aware.

You do not know the personal/sex lives of thousands of artists who have had a top 3 hit from 1958-2022 (nor are you necessarily entitled to).
