I’m rooting for Unholy to go 1. To my knowledge, we’ve never had a non-binary or trans act go to 1 so it would be really cool and give this year some redemption. Uzi was #1 with Bad & Boujee See, but Uzi wasn't out by that point in time, so I don't think they count. Sam has already had two hits while being openly nonbinary, (Dancing With A Stranger, How Do You Sleep) but this is likely going to be not just their first #1 while being openly nonbinary, but their first #1 period. It's kind of crazy that the biggest new releases this week are all from queer artists. Sam Smith, Kim Petras, and Lil Nas X. Also it's funny how we all were like can LNX challenge for the #1, and then well um... But like seriously tho, I did not have Sam Smith or Kim Petras potentially getting a year end list hit with only 6 weeks left in the year on my 2022 bingo card. This is wild.

...y'know very personal thoughts on the song aside, the idea that a trans artist and a non-binary artist will debut in the Top 5 is a great thing. It's just...yeah. Whatever.

If the Sam/Kim song debuts at #1, that’ll be a very odd feat for Kim. There are plenty of artists whose first single hit #1, but I’m trying to think of any artists who were active for years, including charting on other charts, without hitting the Hot 100 — and then suddenly debut at #1. The closest I can think of is probably Janet Jackson, but that’s still not the same. She had 2 Hot 100 (non-top 40) hits before the Control era, but it wasn’t until her 3rd single from Control that she hit #1. Scratching my head to think of other examples. based on wikipedia, glass animals never charted on hot 100 before heat waves. dreamland is their 3rd album; their other two albums charted, first one 8 years ago. Good example — main difference being how long it took Heat Waves to get there but still a good example!

In strict terms, I'm not sure anyone has debuted at #1 after charting on other charts but not the Hot 100. Did Chance the Rapper hit the Hot 100 before that song with DJ Khaled debuted at #1? Childish Gambino had Hot 100 entries prior to "This is America" debuting at #1, but what was his highest peak to that point? I don't think he had any top 10 to that point did he? Of course plenty of artists have charted for a long time before finally getting a #1. Aerosmith even finally got their first #1 with a song that debuted at #1. Nicki Minaj didn't wait as long as them, but finally got a #1 with a #1 debut.
