Apparently, according to Pulse, anything is a Halloween song. So that means I can say Sunroof and California Gurls, cause having a head, just a head, out of a sunroof is hella creepy, and California Gurls is a happy song, just like how trick or treating is happy. Or what about Candy Shop by 50 Cent, cause candy goes with trick or treating you know. "Halloween" songs are subjective in most cases, and are not straightforward like Xmas songs where you know you're listening to a Xmas song by hearing words: 'Christmas', 'tree', 'mistletoe', 'holly', 'present', 'merry'... Some songs just have Halloween vibes, dark atmosphere, scary lyrics or just "Monster", "Ghost", "Dark" in their titles to be associated with Halloween or October as a whole. That's why I don't think we should argue about Halloween songs, since people hear different things and have different definition of Halloween and scary. also, gummy bear showing middle finger can be scary tho

Even XMas songs have become fairly broad, though; "Baby It's Cold Outside," "Hallelujah," "My Favorite Things," etc aren't inherently holiday/Christmas songs but have become part of that canon. That's no different than XMas songs that are considered such because they mention "snow," "winter," "presents," etc. I think this Halloween discussion is because some of us are surprised that people are saying just because a song has a dark tone it's a Halloween song; that's not about "monster" or "ghost." Obviously someone making their own playlist can add whatever they want to it, but that's separate from whether something is generally seen as a Halloween song (and that's a relatively new discussion, certainly compared to XMas songs, so it's evolving).

Obviously someone making their own playlist can add whatever they want to it, but that's separate from whether something is generally seen as a Halloween song (and that's a relatively new discussion, certainly compared to XMas songs, so it's evolving). The difference though is that Christmas has very specific motifs and themes that can appeal to people even outside of a Western context. Like Tropical Countries still have an idea of what Christmas is like even though we don't have a Winter. There are still gift giving, there's still the food, there's still getting together with family, there's still this warmth and holiness to Christmas that we can all relate with even if we have our own unique traditions (cultural or social). Halloween isn't as specific. The only things really universal to Halloween is horror (which could also apply at various other season) and costumes. Trick or treating is not a thing outside of suburbs. So there are no real universal traditions outside of costume parties or horror marathons and even then, it's more a social tradition rather than one you have a commitment to do every year. (also note: I said horror but I didn't specify something being scary. Cause 1.) horror doesn't need to be scary to be effective, 2.) what is scary is subjective so what people deem scary will vary, and 3.) not everyone likes being scared or at least not regularly)

Halloween in terms of the U.S. (and at least some of Europe) is exactly what you said; trick-or-treating, costumes, and "scary" stuff (witches, spiders, ghosts, mummies, etc with some being more relevant in some countries than others). There are then some other things associated with Halloween and the general season, such as pumpkins and maybe apple cider or something.

By less specific, I might in terms of universal symbols. Idk what apple cider is and I've never seen a pumpkin in real life which is why I didn't mention any of those.
Though yes, fever songs are relevant because of that, you're right

Re: The Thriller to #1 - let's say it needs 225-250 for that week (depending on new releases). Obviously, streaming and whatever sales will be primary components with minimal radio.
Thriller has a structural disadvantage when it comes to streaming (and radio)- it's 6 minutes long - even the 2003 Edit is only 30 seconds shorter. Therefore it can only get half the streams per hour compared to the now-normal 3 minute (or less song) - worse if LNX releases another 2-minute track!
Using 24 hours: Thriller 240 max streams; 3 min song 480 max streams. That's significant over multiple days. No clue how the video streams matter now, but it's 14 minutes!

Lol at aiw and mpb switching spotify spots again. I mean seriously I feel like even when they're in the 170's they'll still be doing that. Also I'm getting really impatient now for Sunroof just to get that top radio spot from aiw. It's been taking way too long.

the most Halloween thing about The Weeknd is that he had a whole costume for his alter ego with the red suit, lol. I don't see how most of the songs listed relate to Halloween at all. I don't think his songs thematically fit at all, even though some do have an ominous vibe. it's more toxicity, less spooky.
"Thriller" is the supreme Halloween song precisely because there aren't that many of them. and no, "Dirty Diana" isn't one either.
anyway, check out Kim Petras' Halloween album TURN OFF THE LIGHT if you're looking for seasonal pop music:

Thriller based on prior year trends - not going to #1 at Halloween. The next month album reissue might help it
On the release of Thriller 25 in 2018 -- Thriller the song made it to #1 recurrent
What is a Halloween song or isn't -- won't be determined here but based on last year the big ones that rose up due to Halloween were
Thriller Somebody's Watching Me (Rockwell) Monster MASH Ghostbusters (Ray Parker) This Is Halloween (Danny Elfman)

But, the visuals of the era do. See: The Weekend After Hours Nightmare at Universal Studios Horror Nights (which all things aside, I'm sure was extremely lucrative for him.)

"CUFF IT" SZN 🔥 I didn't realize "Cool Kids" was having a resurgence. I loved that song & that Echosmith album back when it came out. They kinda fully disappeared after that era though.

That's kind of funny. I was just jamming out to Cool Kids the other day. I had no idea there was a tik tok trend behind it until just now.

Since 2019, Thriller has been on a pretty good run and has seen a big increase in streams. Halloween's on a Monday this year which lines up nicely for the chart week. That being said, the streams would probably need to double over 2021's levels to carry Thriller to #1. That isn't going to happen. US Spotify streams for Thriller each year (in thousands):Orange = Halloween Chart week Bolded = Halloween Day

Thriller is a much better song than Somebody's Watching Me and also works better as a Halloween song

Thriller Michael Jackson X BTS. Drop that #1 in your *Trick* or Treat bag.
Dead Man's Party (Oingo Bongo) + Something in My House (Dead or Alive) will always lead my Halloween party playlist. SIMH is one of few songs to SIMH reference Halloween.

If „Cuff It“ were able to hit the top 10, it‘d be the first time since Sasha Fierce that she collected multiple top 10 hits from one album. 13/14 years between the two eras

Big ass gain for girl in red on a Sunday, wow.
“we fell in love in october” is pretty well know despite not charting anywhere. Last year’s October resurgence was noticeable, sure, but not this big. I wonder if it’ll keep chugging along or if it’ll fall back down.
I hope it can pull a dark red and debut on the Hot 100

The Halloweeniest song there is is John Carpenter’s Halloween Theme. I’ll also give you Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells (aka, Theme from The Exorcist).

Certain Weeknd tracks like Blinding Lights or Sacrifice are great party tracks and would work fine for Halloween, although they aren't really Halloween songs perse compared to something like Thriller.
My favorite Halloween staple is Don't Fear The Reaper, mostly for it's inclusion in the original 1978 Halloween film. As for tracks that aren't Halloween songs but I still listen to throughout the season: Cher's Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves is one of my favorite "Halloween but not Halloween tracks" because of it's circus sound and the X-File's featuring it.

Sweater Weather reached new positional peaks yesterday at both US (#13) and Global (#22) Spotify. Why are we having a resurgence for one of the most boring hits of 2014? If we're gonna bring back a hit from 2014 why can't it be Maps, Chandelier, or The Monster?

Yes, every time I think of fall I think of maps or swinging from lights.

It's not a resurgence, the song has been consistently popular for the past two years, especially in late summer and fall (plus, it's a bi anthem). It has 1,7B streams (the most streamed song released in 2012) and it's almost Diamond in the US.

Halloween songs on Spotify last year, on Halloween Day itself:
#1: Monster Mash #3: Thriller #5: Ghostbusters #7: This Is Halloween #12: Somebody's Watching Me #15: Spooky, Scary Skeletons #16: Blinding Lights #24: Disturbia #25: Superstition #27: Thriller (2003) #29: Highway To Hell #37: Toxic #38: bad guy #41: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) #45: Time Warp #50: She Wolf
Of course, this is highly affected by what Spotify puts on their playlists, but it's still an interesting look.
