I think the album came out too late after Flowers which peaked very high but has declined fairly fast in streams too.

On albums chart, Miley is probably debuting at #3 behind Wallen and TWICE.

Maybe it will become a trend for older acts to have a huge hit with underwhelming album just like Sam Smith (Unholy) and Miley (Flowers). At this point, Katy Perry getting a #1 song is possible and I'm not complaining.

I'm confused why are people shocked with Miley's and Sam's performance. They've NEVER had an album smash in the streaming era.

One hit song doesn't create enough buzz.

I don't agree. I think people simply didn't connect with the album. Just going off social media/music forums, there was a lot of hype and anticipation for the album, especially when Morgan's album dropped and started smashing from day 1.

I always felt like the success of Flowers was a fluke. Miley released much better songs from 2014-2021 that never did nearly as much damage on the charts as Flowers but its success was never some indication that her album was also gonna smash.

Yeah, not happy with Miley's numbers. Her promo strategy for this album was abysmal and did nothing to play to her strengths as an artist.

Her reputation was completely rebuilt during PH because of her live performances, she should have been everywhere for this. Would she have done blockbuster numbers either way? Probably not. But I definitely think she could have shifted more units and built more hype by selling this music live.

Disappointed with Miley's numbers but I had too high expectations from "Flowers". The numbers are really good for Miley when you compare it to what she's done previously! The album may have a lot of longevity though hopefully! Most of her album is still climbing on Apple Music so that's a good thing:

Compared to Miley’s previous works post Bangerz, yeah it’s good but her best performing since then was Midnight Sky which didn’t exactly light up the charts either.

But compared to how BIG flowers was on debut? This is HORRID. ONE top ten on Spotify day 1? And at 8? And Flowers or a new song ain’t even competing for the top spot. Yeah this is ROUGH. If Flowers wasn’t SO huge and was just a strong top 3/5 single then these numbers would be fine, like if PinkPantheress released a new album after Boy is a liar, these numbers would EAT.

I guess there really wasn't much appetite for new Miley, and it was largely just hype for that one song with the unique relationship tie-in and the fact that it heavily sampled an already existing familiar hit song.

I mean it's possible and we've definitely seen artists have huge comebacks and open big immediately with their albums after a string of flops or a lengthy period of inactivity. The Emancipation of Mimi comes to mind (which is interesting because that album opened hugely even just as We Belong Together was starting to rise and hadn't yet entered the top 10), but they marketed that album as a "return of the voice" and return to form as a rehabbed star after her Glitter breakdown days (I guess they tried to do that with Charmbracelet too, but it was too soon and the material probably wasn't strong enough). With Miley I guess the public just isn't as hungry for her, and/or her material just isn't strong enough either.

I honestly think MC cares more about being viewed as a serious musician than gaining massive commercial success again.

I’m not too surprised. They hyped up Flowers immediately after the NYE performance which was genius. They didn’t do much to build up the hype for the album here.

This alone tells me they’re thinking about doing the longevity strategy, spreading out promo this entire album cycle. I can see few promo slots like SNL, GMA/Today Summer concerts, award shows, etc.

I can see Miley being promo-sensitive in a sense like Gaga was, every time she perform, she’ll probably shoot up the charts. Then again, I also see Miley not caring at all about success, and that Flowers unexpectedly smashing was a cherry on the top for her.
