Michael Jackson would have owned the charts for months if allowed back on them when he passed. I don't think anyone currently alive will match the impact of his death. The albums sold for weeks and weeks with no end in sight. At one point I think Madonna was arguably on equal footing to Michael in terms of impact but her streak of s**tty albums has, imo, diwndled her legacy quite a bit. Also lol @ several people not getting the reference of my Karma/Tina post 💀💀💀 Michael was still relatively young when he died. That tends to be more surprising for people and lead to more exposure of their work, imo. We still have the most famous Beatle living among us. When he dies, there will certainly be a huge surge in their work and his. Tina lived to be in her ‘80s. She had already retired to Switzerland, enjoying her house by the water. God dammit I loved her!

Some interesting stats below from the Weekly Top 10 Digital Song Sales thread. In the weeks following Michael's death, beginning with the chart date July 11, 2009, (he died on June 25, a Thursday), you can see that none of his songs got higher than #2, the highest being Thriller with 167K, while I Gotta Feeling was comfortably over 200k sales the whole time. Though IGAF's airplay was just entering the top 10 and not at its highest yet (don't remember what Michael's airplay was, but none of his songs were close to the top 10), IGAF still had a comfortable lead, so none of Michael's songs would've been #1. Again, this might've been different if his death coincided with the beginning of the tracking week (the tracking week was Monday-Sunday then). It appears though that Man In The Mirror, Billie Jean, and Thriller probably would've been in the top 10 for 2 or 3 weeks. Interestingly, by the August 1-dated chart, all of his songs had fallen out of the Digital Songs top 10. Although I'm sure radio took up about half the formula on average at the time and it's hard to find accurate radio numbers from 09.

Sales weighed most heavily in the formula back then, as I believe 100k sales = 100 million AI (the average #1 radio song around that time received around 125 million weekly AI). I'm guessing some of his songs could've been in the #4-7 range.
