One of their better hits, but overstayed a bit.

"Down Home" was released in February 1991 as the fourth single from Alabama's thirteenth studio album, Pass It On Down, and notched them yet another number one country hit. This is the fourth and final song by Alabama in the rankdown to exit as "Forever's As Far As I'll Go", "Here We Are", and "Then Again" all bowed out in the bottom 20. This song managed to secure twelve top-half rankings, with only nuggie99 and castleoblivion26 ranking it in their bottom 30. It was initially an early contender in the top 15 but eventually settled just outside the top 20. Nevertheless, it maintained its position as a consistent favorite, especially considering Alabama's somewhat polarizing fanbase among the Tractors. Four participants had this track in their top 20, with 🌺CountryLineDancer being the sole individual ranking it within their top 10.

Stats for #23:
The next song to make its exit was, in fact, a strong contender for a spot in the top 15 during the middle of its run. However, it encountered some challenges in the final stretch, gradually losing momentum and ultimately falling out of the top 20 entirely. Two participants lose a top 10 ranking while another drops one of their bottom 10s.

Alabama doesn’t frequently impress me, but Down Home was a pleasant discovery. Their harmony is not the best thing, but they showcased strong melody with this song.

"Someday" was released in August 1991 as the second single from Alan Jackson's sophomore album, Don't Rock The Jukebox, and went on to become his third consecutive #1 country hit. This is the second of four songs by Alan Jackson in the rankdown to exit as "I'd Love You All Over Again" bowed out just inside the top half. That leaves both "Chasin' That Neon Rainbow" and "Don't Rock the Jukebox" in contention. Despite briefly slipping out of the top half due to an early and solitary bottom 10 ranking from someguy, this song swiftly claimed a spot in the top 15, maintaining that position for a substantial portion of its run. While it reached its highest rank just short of the top 10, it faced difficulties in the latter part of the rankdown, gradually losing ground with each subsequent list. In total, eleven participants positioned this song in their top half, with both gardyfan and nuggie99 even ranking it in their top 10.

Alabama doesn’t frequently impress me, but Down Home was a pleasant discovery. Their harmony is not the best thing, but they showcased strong melody with this song. This is one of their hits that still receives quite a bit of recurrent airplay even today (at least down here in the States). I often find myself hearing it at random times when I tune into terrestrial radio.

Finally, a George Strait song is gone. No reason for so many of them to be in the top 30.

Originally recorded by the Canadian folk and country music duo Ian & Sylvia in 1964 and subsequently by Judy Collins in 1968, Suzy Bogguss released "Someday Soon" in September 1991 as the first single from her third studio album, Aces. Although it didn't quite reach the top 10 (peaking just short at #12), it has since become a cherished fan favorite and stands proudly among the best in her discography. This song had quite the journey, starting at its lowest point and reaching its highest position right from the beginning of the rankdown. Thanks to kw9461's top 5 placement, it made a close approach to the top 15. However, it soon encountered a couple of its lowest rankings, including a solitary bottom 20 placement by nathanalbright. As a result, it spent most of the middle part of the competition hovering just outside the top 30. Nevertheless, it managed to regain some momentum in the latter half. During this resurgence, two more top 10 rankings from Cody Wants Out... and castleoblivion26 propelled it back into the realm of the top 20. Despite LBTrocks' last-minute top 50 ranking, that slight difference was all it took which left this trailing behind just enough to not make it in.

"New Way (To Light Up an Old Flame)" was released in June 1991 as the fourth and final single from Joe Diffie's debut album, A Thousand Winding Roads, and peaked at number 2 on the Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The song also made it into the top 5 of his artist rankdown which was hosted by castleoblivion26 shortly after his passing in 2020. This song commenced its journey as an early top 15 contender, raising hopes of a potential top 10 position. However, it gradually settled outside of the top 20 as it received its first of two bottom 20 rankings, courtesy of nathanalbright. Nevertheless, it managed to regain its footing in the top 20, thanks in part to a top 3 ranking from Cody Wants Out.... Regrettably, this resurgence was short-lived, as it received yet another bottom 20 ranking, this time from taylor is terrified. Even with a last-minute top 15 ranking from LBTrocks, it remained just out of reach of the top 20.

"You Know Me Better Than That" is a great song but have to think it leaves soon.
Strait doesn't even like it lol. He's stated he would have not recorded it had it been sent to him 5-10 years down the road.

"The Chill of an Early Fall" was released in September 1991 as the third single from George Strait's album of the same name and reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks. The song was also co-written by Gretchen Peters, a prolific songwriter whose work saw many of her compositions recorded by renowned artists in the 1990s, including Martina McBride and Patty Loveless. This song experienced both its highest and lowest positions within the first quarter of its run. It initially started off as a strong contender, nearly breaking into the top 5, thanks to George Strait Junkie's support. However, the subsequent three rankings placed it outside of the top half, pushing it to the back of the top 40. Another top 10 ranking from me helped it regain its position within the top 25, where it comfortably held during the middle part of the rankdown. However, a single bottom 30 ranking from Cody Wants Out... caused it to slip outside of the top 30 once again. But there was still hope, as a #1 ranking from Kanenrá:ke gave the song new life, followed by a top 10 ranking from taylor is terrified and a perfect top 20 ranking from LBTrocks. It was with that final ranking that pushed it just over the edge and brought it back into the top 20.

I've mentioned this previously, but there's a special place in my heart for both this song and album because it was the very first cassette tape I got to choose on my own. I remember a shopping trip with my mom to Walmart, and at that age, I was gaining some childhood independence and probably didn't want to be seen with my mother while she was shopping for "womanly things" (as kids sometimes feel lol). So, I ended up in the electronics department, where I spent a good part of an hour searching for the album she said I could get.
I looked and looked before finally settling on The Chill of an Early Fall. I think I might have remembered seeing him on the CMA Awards and being drawn to his music. My mom came over to make sure that was the one I wanted, and we headed back home. Together, we put up Christmas decorations and spent the entire night listening to this album on repeat.
