The quality swing between "Forever Together" (excellent) and "Heroes and Friends" (not good) is so wild for them to be going out back-to-back like this. Plus "Point of Light" having already departed awhile back despite being just as good as "Forever Together." Ugh. Y'all didn't deserve Randy. 🚮 "Heroes & Friends" did a fair amount better than "Forever Together" in the Randy Travis rankdown, so I'm actually quite surprised "Forever Together" did better this time around. Both deserved to be in the top half though. Also lol @ "Like We Never Had a Broken Heart" going out before ANY of the Garth songs. Wtf. Not one of Trisha's best or most memorable singles, but the fact it has her voice on it alone makes it better than anything her hack husband has ever done. This is getting ridiculous. At the very least "Rodeo" should've been loooooong gone. I'm not the Garth hater that you are, but agreed about "Rodeo". Easily my least favorite of his signature hits. It was the no-brainer bathroom and drink run song when I saw Garth in concert last year.

Yeah, like the other 3 songs of his I fully expected to still be in as they're signature hits, but I feel like "Rodeo" just has nothing redeemable about it, and his vocals on it are catastrophically grating more than they typically are.

"It Won't Be Me" was released in October 1990 as the third single from Tanya Tucker's album Tennessee Woman and reached #6 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The other hit from this album, "Oh What It Did To Me", exited down in the bottom 20 leaving "Down to My Last Teardrop" in contention. Although it didn't secure any top 5 rankings here, it did achieve a top 15 placement from .indulgecountry, followed by a top 20 spot from Cody Wants Out.... Only four others included it in their top half, as the majority of the group positioned it just outside of that range. Three others ranked it down inside their bottom 20, with sabre14 being the only participant to rank it within their bottom 10.

"I Am a Simple Man" was released in April 1991 as the first single from Ricky Van Shelton's album Backroads and was his 9th number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. This comes after the departure of "Life's Little Ups And Downs," which exited in the bottom 5. As a result, "Keep It Between the Lines" and "Rockin' Years" with Dolly Parton remain in contention. Although it initially entered the top 20, it swiftly slid back outside the top half and mostly stayed there throughout its run. An equal number of participants included it in their top half, while just as many positioned it in the bottom 30. The highest ranking came from nuggie99, who placed it in their top 12, followed by two top 20 rankings from LBTrocks and George Strait Junkie. Growing up as a young boy in the 90s, CMT played a significant role in my introduction to country music and had a profound influence on me. I have vivid memories of watching the music video to this song frequently, which led to my becoming a fan of Ricky's. That initial admiration from my younger days remains strong even today. Although he was one of the most prominent acts in the late 80s and the very early 90s, he ultimately chose to step away from the music industry. This decision is likely a significant factor contributing to his songs tending to underperform here on Pulse.

The trend of #1 hits exiting the competition persists with the departure of our next song, which happened to be one of the most polarizing tracks. Regrettably, a trio of participants lose a top 5 ranking, with one of them even having it as their runner-up. "Walk on Faith" is the debut single by singer/songwriter Mike Reid and was released in November 1990. It is from his 1991 debut studio album Turning for Home and became his only number one country hit in February 1991. Ranked as the third most polarizing song, "Walk on Faith" managed to gather sufficient early support, earning a brief spot in the top 30. Overall, its rankings were quite varied, with an almost even distribution between top 5 and bottom 10 placements. Notably, it secured a runner-up spot from CoJoFan, followed by a perplexing last place ranking from taylor is terrified. While the name Mike Reid might not ring a bell for many of you, I can assure you that you're quite familiar with his impressive body of work as a songwriter. He played a pivotal role in crafting many of the iconic hits from that era, including "Born to Be Blue" by The Judds, "My Strongest Weakness" and "To Be Loved By You" by Wynonna, "Some Kind of Trouble" by Tanya Tucker, "In This Life" by Collin Raye, "Everywhere" by Tim McGraw, and even Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me." In a sense, Mike Reid is to the late 80s and early 90s what Phil Vassar is to the late 90s and early 2000s, leaving an indelible mark on country music during his time.

"Time Passes By" was released in March 1991 as the first single and title track from Kathy Mattea's sixth studio album, Time Passes By, and was a top 10 country hit. The song also happens to feature Trisha Yearwood on harmony vocals. Despite not securing any top 10 rankings here, it did manage to accumulate several top 30 placements. Notably, it received a ranking just outside the top 20 from taylor is terrified, followed closely by top 25 positions from both myself and Kanenrá:ke. However, it's interesting to note that this song actually started off as our initial contender for last place, thanks to George Strait Junkie, which made it challenging for it to shake off. Fortunately, it managed to break free from the bottom 30 and even made a significant leap into the top 60 during the final stretch. I'm not certain if I might have ranked this higher than I should've, but it has always been among my personal favorites by Kathy, and I still find myself revisiting it frequently even to this day.

"Come On Back" was released in September 1990 as the second single from Carlene Carter's first commercially successful album, I Fell in Love, and went on to become her second top 5 hit at country radio. Although this song didn't secure any top 5 rankings here, it did earn two rankings just shy of that, courtesy of both bigd79 and 🌺CountryLineDancer. .indulgecountry also placed it just outside his top 20. Interestingly, this song started as an initial bottom 20 contender but quickly climbed out of that position, even briefly making it into the top 40. However, it eventually settled outside the top half during the middle part of its run and remained in that range for the duration of its time in the rankdown.

I'll wrap things up for this evening and postpone the revelation of the top half until tomorrow. This will give everyone a chance to catch up, as I've been moving quite swiftly since we began last Sunday. As for Garth's songs, all four still remain in contention (much to the chagrin of .indulgecountry!). Will he manage to survive yet another round, or has his time finally come to pass? What other songs might just miss out on the top half? The excitement continues tomorrow! {Songs Remaining} Anymore Ball And Chain Blame It On Texas Brand New Man Brother Jukebox Brotherly Love Chasin' That Neon Rainbow Daddy's Come Around Don't Rock The Jukebox Don't Tell Me What To Do Down At The Twist And Shout Down Home Down To My Last Teardrop Fallin' Out Of Love Fancy Feed Jake Ghost In This House Here's a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares) Hurt Me Bad (In a Real Good Way) I Got You I'd Love You All Over Again I'm That Kind Of Girl I've Come To Expect It From You If I Know Me If The Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets) In A Different Light Keep It Between The Lines Liza Jane Lord Have Mercy On A Country Boy Love Can Build A Bridge Meet In The Middle Mirror Mirror Never Knew Lonely New Way (To Light Up An Old Flame) One Of Those Things Only Here For A Little While Pocket Full Of Gold Rockin' Years Rodeo Rumor Has It She's In Love With The Boy Small Town Saturday Night Someday Someday Soon Tempted The Chill of an Early Fall The Moon Over Georgia The Thunder Rolls The Walk Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House Unanswered Prayers We Both Walk You Know Me Better Than That You've Got To Stand For Something Your Love Is A Miracle

"Walk on Faith" is an outstanding song with stellar songwriting. Mike Reid isn't a well-known name here so I knew it would probably finish outside the top 40, but wild to me there are bottom 10 rankings for this one.

"Tempted" was released in August 1991 as the third single and title track from Marty Stuart's fifth studio album, Tempted, and was his first top 5 hit on the country charts. This song is among the few revealed so far that never found itself in the bottom 30, as at least eleven participants ranked it in or very near their top half. Notably, taylor is terrified delivered a surprising top 10 ranking, while nuggie99 slotted it just inside their top 20. Only four participants placed this song in their bottom 30, with bigd79 going as far as a bottom 10 and .indulgecountry ranking it in their bottom 5. This has always been one of my all-time favorite Marty Stuart songs, and I'm absolutely thrilled to see it have made a run for the top half. He was another artist I discovered in my early years through watching plenty of CMT on the tube, and I've remained a fan of his ever since.

“Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House” was released in January 1991 from Garth Brooks' sophomore album, No Fences, as the album's third single and was his fifth consecutive number one hit. This song had an encouraging beginning, briefly breaking into the top 15 and maintaining a position near the top 25 for the first half of its run. However, it faced a significant decline in the latter part, starting with the first of two bottom 10 rankings from 🌺CountryLineDancer. This was followed by two more bottom 20 rankings from castleoblivion26 and .indulgecountry. It seemed like it might secure a place in the top half, but a second bottom 10 ranking from taylor is terrified pushed it out of contention. I understand this might not be the first Garth Brooks song some of you were expecting to see eliminated, but I'm sure there are those who are relieved that the moment has finally arrived. I've heard this song so many times throughout my life that I'm honestly quite indifferent about it. However, I must admit that only recently have I been able to listen to the entire song without a strong desire to skip it due to the immense overplay it has received.
