Letβs face it: this forum is about as far from Last Nightβs target audience as possible. As in normal people who donβt spend hours online discussing musicπ I personally feel like itβs a behemoth, and at least more culturally prominent than As It Was. Another thing is there a good amount of non-American posters here and for them yeah the song is going to be nothing. I think that the non-american thing is the key in my case, cause i've never heard Last Night on the radio, in a club, or anyone referencing listening to it, while As It Was, Anti-Hero or Flowers were everywhere. It's not exclusive for LN tho, because in the past few years I could name several #1 on Billboard that were mere minor hits in Europe. That said, I kinda like the song and I believe worse ones have reached the top in the last few years. yeah Iβm used to random rap songs that go #1 in the US but flop in Europe (even things like Bodak Yellow) but the difference is that this time itβs a country song so itβs surprising because we (international posters) thought it was a niche genre in the US.

Letβs be honest, people are calling Last Night on this thread βboring and genericβ because itβs by a country artist they personally donβt like. Taylor singing a similar song would be a βlyrical genius.β The fact is Last Night is one of the biggest songs of the decade β whether or not you personally have listened to it. Sure the charts are βweak,β but heβs been consistently at 300 points for weeks, beating out the second place by over 50 points. Heβs been dominating streaming, digital, AND radio, without being propelled by stans. Facts are facts. These are two separate points. A song can be big (and "LN is big) but still be generic; those are two different concepts. The reason no one is saying it's evidence of lyrical genius is because it's not. Please point me to the original/clever lyrics in the song. IMO it's full of cliches (seeing tail lights in the dust, it not being their night/kiss, letting the alcohol do the talking). Reread my post because I never said the song was original / clever. I said, had this been a taylor song, people would be saying it was.

Morgan should release Man Made A Bar to pop radio next. :) But in reality he will probably send Neon Star next. It will probably be βThinking βBout Meβ which is the next most pop friendly song on the album and has been streaming extremely well for a non-single.

You also wrote, "people are calling Last Night on this thread βboring and genericβ because itβs by a country artist they personally donβt like." I then responded the way I did to note that, no, people (or at least me) are calling it generic because the lyrics are full of cliches. It has nothing to do with it being by a bigot or not by Swift, it's just lyrically generic period. It's interesting that instead of responding to my request that you point out which lyrics in the song are are clever, you simply say that you never said it was original and that your point was really about Swift. So, that implies you know the song isn't clever, which therefore means you know why people are calling it boring and generic.

What is boring and generic to you may not be boring and generic to someone else. Last Night is a good song to a lot of people and thatβs why so many people love it. This is why it has stayed at the top of Spotify for months. So people need to stop being surprised.

Lyrics being origina or generic is as subjective as music is. It really depends on what the listener has during their lifetime heard and what's important to them in lyrics as a listener.
Judging by the vast majority of songs that have gone number one throughout decades of the hot 100, id day the evidence is more than overwhelming, the general public eats up generic and cliche. In fact if you want to be successful, it's best to drop the "cleverness".
An argument can also be made their rally hasn't been written in like several decades. There's only so many ways to write something about sex, love and drugs. Inserting some new synonym doesn't make something original.
Being generic is exactly why LN works. That's whwt people eat up and want.

A gentle reminder that double-posting is against Pulse rules. If you have something to say and you just posted a couple hours or minutes ago, kindly edit the previous post. If you are unsure how to do that, reach out to staff and we will gladly help! If your last post was the previous day, it's OK to post again, but generally, it's a no.
Also, I see that people are still calling Morgan Wallen names unnecessarily. At some point, it's going to cross over into trolling, so keep it cute. You don't have to like the song and you are free to express that respectfully. Anything beyond that is extra.

Plus, Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer" becomes her 41st top 10 β extending her record among women β and Gunna's "Fukumean" also reaches the top 10.
Thereβs new blood atop the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, as Olivia Rodrigoβs βVampireβ debuts at No. 1. Rodrigo slays with her third leader, following βDrivers Licenseβ and βGood 4 Uβ in 2021, both of which also launched at No. 1.
With βVampireβ serving as the lead single from Rodrigoβs sophomore album Guts, due Sept. 8, after βDrivers Licenseβ introduced her first LP, Sour, she is the first artist ever to debut the lead singles from two career-opening albums at No. 1 on the Hot 100.
Plus, two songs ascend for their first week each in the Hot 100βs top 10: Taylor Swiftβs βCruel Summer,β now being promoted as her new single after it was released on her 2019 album, Lover, jumps 13-7 to becomes her 41st top 10 β extending her record among women β and Gunnaβs βFukumeanβ pushes 12-8, marking his fourth top 10. The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated July 15, 2023) will update on Billboard.com Tuesday (July 11). For all chart news, you can follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Streams, airplay & sales: Rodrigoβs βVampire,β released on Geffen/Interscope Records, drew 35.5 million streams and 26.3 million radio airplay audience impressions (aided by an FCC-friendly radio edit) and sold 26,000 (17,000 sales combined on 7β vinyl, sold for $10, and CD, for $3.50; and 9,000 digital downloads) in its first week, ending July 6, according to Luminate, following its June 30 release. The song is the 1,150th No. 1 since the Hot 100 began in August 1958, and the 67th to soar in at the summit. The track likewise debuts at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart, No. 2 on Digital Song Sales (as itβs the overall top-selling song of the week, downloads and physical copies combined) and No. 22 on Radio Songs. (It starts at No. 17 on Pop Airplay and No. 22 on Adult Pop Airplay.) βWe always said that it was kind of our version of a rock opera,β Rodrigo told Billboard of βVampire,β which she wrote with her main collaborator Dan Nigro, who solely produced it. βI think as the album was coming together, we were coming up with a bunch of songs that we really liked, but this one always stuck out to me as something that I felt like was honoring my singer-songwriter roots, but felt like an evolution β in a good way that wasnβt too stark. So, I really liked it for that, and it was always one of my favorites.β Rodrigoβs 3rd No. 1: βVampireβ is Rodrigoβs third Hot 100 No. 1. βDrivers Licenseβ dominated for eight weeks, starting upon its debut in January 2021, and βGood 4 Uβ ruled for a week in its first frame in May 2021. βVampireβ is her fifth top 10, as her debut album Sour also generated βDeja Vuβ (No. 3 peak) and βTraitorβ (No. 9). All 11 songs from Sour reached the Hot 100βs top 30. Leader for lead singles: With βVampireβ the lead single from Rodrigoβs sophomore album Guts, expected Sept. 8, after βDrivers Licenseβ ushered in Sour, she is the first artist ever to debut the lead single from two career-opening albums at No. 1 on the Hot 100. βVβ is for victory: βVampireβ is just the seventh song that begins with the letter βvβ to top the Hot 100. Here the songs that have made such vaunted vaults: βVampire,β Olivia Rodrigo, 2023 βViva La Vida,β Coldplay, 2008 βVision of Love,β Mariah Carey, 1990 βVogue,β Madonna, 1990 βVenus,β Bananarama, 1986 βVenus,β The Shocking Blue, 1970 βVenus,β Frankie Avalon, 1959 (Strange, but itβs the tooth: Rodrigo has the first Hot 100 hit with the word βvampireβ in its title.) Y is for Y2K: Rodrigo was born Feb. 20, 2003. She is the only artist born in the 2000s with multiple Hot 100 No. 1s. The other acts born since 2000 to have led the Hot 100: Billie Eilish (βBad Guy,β 2019); Jawsh 865 (βSavage Love [Laxed β Siren Beat]β with Jason Derulo and BTS, 2020); 24kGoldn (βMoodβ featuring Iann Dior, 2020); and The Kid LAROI (βStayβ with Justin Bieber, 2021). βI think the most change Iβve felt was just as a girl, growing up and changing from being a teenager to a 20-year-old,β Rodrigo mused to Billboard of her evolution over the last two years. βAll of the maturing and figuring yourself out, thatβs just on a normal human-to-human level β I think that was the most surprising thing for me.β Morgan Wallenβs βLast Nightβ dips to No. 2 on the Hot 100 following 13 weeks at No. 1, the second-longest command this decade, after Harry Stylesβ βAs It Wasβ (15 weeks, 2022). βLast Nightβ spent the last 10 consecutive weeks at No. 1, the best streak since Roddy Ricchβs βThe Boxβ linked 11 weeks on top all in a row in January-March 2020. βLast Nightβ drew 74.5 million in radio reach and 29.8 million streams and sold 8,000 June 30-July 6. βLast Nightβ tops Billboardβs Hot Country Songs chart, which employs the same multimetric methodology as the Hot 100, for a 22nd week, the sixth-longest rule since the chart became an all-encompassing genre reflection in 1958; Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Lineβs βMeant to Beβ spent a record 50 frames at No. 1 in 2017-18. Plus, βLast Nightβ adds a sixth week atop Billboardβs Songs of the Summer chart, having ranked at No. 1 each week since the survey returned. Luke Combsβ cover of Tracy Chapmanβs βFast Carβ reverses course to No. 3 from its No. 2 Hot 100 high. Rema and Selena Gomezβs βCalm Downβ slips to No. 4 from its No. 3 Hot 100 best as it spends a third week atop Radio Songs (92 million, up 2%). The collab concurrently tops the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart for a 45th week, extending the longest reign since the ranking began over a year ago (in partnership with music festival and global brand Afro Nation). Miley Cyrusβ βFlowersβ retreats 4-5 on the Hot 100, after eight weeks at No. 1 beginning upon its debut in January, and Lil Durkβs βAll My Lifeβ featuring J. Cole descends 5-6, after it started at its No. 2 peak, as it tops the multimetric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts for a seventh week each. Taylor Swiftβs βCruel Summerβ bounds 13-7 on the Hot 100, with 30.3 million in all-format airplay audience (up 35%), 14.9 million streams (up 11%) and 3,000 sold (essentially even week-over-week). The song was released on Swiftβs 2019 album Lover and is now being promoted as her newest single. It has been gaining momentum in recent weeks, as Swift has been performing it on her current Eras Tour, her first in which sheβs been able to spotlight songs from Lover, which was released shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each concert on the tour is divided into 10 acts, encompassing nine of her LPs; the Lover era kicks off the show, with βCruel Summerβ performed in the opening set.
Nearly four years after Loverβs release, βCruel Summerβ becomes the setβs fourth Hot 100 top 10, joining lead single βMe!β featuring Brendon Urie (No. 2 peak); βYou Need to Calm Downβ (also No. 2); and the title track (No. 10), all in 2019. βCruel Summerβ is Swiftβs 41st career Hot 100 top 10, the second-most among all acts and the most among women. Most Hot 100 Top 10s: 68, Drake 41, Taylor Swift 38, Madonna 34, The Beatles 32, Rihanna 30, Michael Jackson 29, Elton John 28, Mariah Carey 28, Stevie Wonder 27, Janet Jackson 26, Justin Bieber 25, Lil Wayne 25, Elvis Presley (whose career start predated the Hot 100βs inception) Gunnaβs βFukumeanβ charges 12-8 on the Hot 100, driven most heavily by 20.2 million streams, up 12% and boosted by the July 5 premiere of its official video. The song is the rapperβs fourth Hot 100 top 10, following βPushin Pβ with Future and featuring Young Thug (No. 7, January 2022); βLemonadeβ with Internet Money and featuring Don Toliver and NAV (No. 6, November 2020); and βDrip Too Hardβ with Lil Baby (No. 4, October 2018). Swiftβs βKarma,β featuring Ice Spice, slips 8-9 on the Hot 100, after it soared to its No. 2 high in June following the release of its remix with Ice Spice. Rounding out the Hot 100βs top 10, Toosiiβs βFavorite Songβ falls 6-10, after it hit No. 5. Again, for all chart news, you can follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram and all charts (dated July 15), including the Hot 100 in its entirety, will refresh on Billboard.com Wednesday (July 11). Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published.

Note the new addition, saying digital sales at D2C sites are excluded. Thus, physical singles sold via artists' web stores are allowed?

Still not exactly sure why they excluded digital sales from artists' websites? I thought they already took care of the problem by excluding multiple copies per purchaser, so as long as it's a legit one sale per person, I don't see the problem. Was is that this is harder to verify through artist websites?

Got it- thanks, kimberly.
85la- since they did away with digital copies that were automatic when purchasing a physical single that wouldn't get shipped during a tracking week, not sure why digital sales alone would be excluded. Unless fan armies found a way around per-purchaser limits.

I imagine artists like Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and BTS exploiting the "alternate digital cover" and "digitally autographed single" tactics had something to do with that. it was way too easy for artists' teams to whip up "different" versions to put up on their web stores on a Thursday as a final push, for instance. it's not the norm at all for other digital download platforms. it remains to be seen if they find a way to shamelessly put an "autographed single cover" on iTunes.

^How 'bout it. :) In any event, most physical singles would be priced higher than a digital single. Though I don't recall Billboard setting a threshold (to count for the charts) for physical singles in recent years, like it did for albums and digital tracks.

This year the highest sales were bts and beyonce.
"78,000 sold (up 4,026%), fueled by a range of remixes released during the tracking week, joining its previously available original clean and explicit versions: its βWetterβ remix (clean and explicit) was put up for purchase on BeyoncΓ©βs official webstore Feb. 3, followed by its a cappella (clean and explicit) and instrumental versions (Feb. 5), with all mixes released wide on streaming services and digital retailers by Feb. 8."

Party in the USA returns to Hot 100 at #50. Another MC with an iconic holiday hit! Like AIWFCIY, PITU slowly started to regrow over the year. Itβs now starting to become the defining hit of the 4th. It could potentially the song MC will be most associated with long after her hit making days are over.
