A second wind after the album comes out is very possible, and I'm hoping it happens, but I must say, the very fact that it could leave the top 10 just a few weeks after debuting at #1 (with that #1 debut not being extremely strong mind you) is just not a very encouraging sign. For someone who had one of the most impressive debuts of all time (of any gender), with her two biggest hits spending multiple weeks at #1 or in the top 2, it's pretty hard to argue that this isn't an underperformance up to this point. Notice how I'm saying up to this point though. It's very possible things could turn around after the second single and once the album is released, but that will be more difficult at this point, as lead singles do provide a very good indicator (though not a definite indicator) of how an era will go, and so far, unfortunately it's looking like she'll have a hard time measuring up to her debut's performance. I agree, it underperformed (it's still a hit, not a FLOP), but I don't think it's bad or serious as some think, maybe people should just stop comparing this song or future singles to DL and G4U, because you can't always have those kind of hits. I really like vampire, it's one of my favorite 2023 songs so far, but I can understand why it's not a huge hit - DL had a story behind it and interesting lyrics, G4U was one of the catchiest songs that year and really popular on TikTok. Vampire is kinda there, just like deja vu was imo, great songs, but nothing groundbreaking or interesting about them. For example, deja vu even dropped out of the top 20 in its 7th week, despite being the first single after drivers license, but when she dropped G4U and Sour, the song returned to the top 10 and spent 14 weeks there. My point, people jump to conclusions too quickly, and think something's guaranteed when you have hype around. Not comparing Olivia to them, but look at Drake and Taylor. They are the biggest artists of our generation - Taylor literally waited 7,5 years to have a song with 10+ weeks in the top 10 (not counting IDWLF) and Drake is still waiting for a song with multiple weeks at #1 since In My Feelings. Olivia will be fine, she just needs the right song.

Now holding the #1 spot for a second week in a row is fukumean which was stable throughout the week, only dropping 0.04% in streams. But the bigger story comes with the #2 song and really the whole week in general. As coinciding with its movie being a global smash hit and a cultural phenomenon, the Barbie album smashed harder than I think anyone expected. Despite only charting 6 songs from the album, 3 of them made the Top 10 and reached new peaks in the process. Barbie World and Dance the Night doubled their streams from last week, soaring up 99.95% and 117.31% respectively. And thanks to a prominent feature in the film that I won't spoil: What Was I Made For? rose from its debut last week to #6, climbing by 55.69%. And that's before we get into the top debut of the week: the lead single for UTOPIA, the star studded K-POP at #4. We did have big losers in the Top 10, with vampire sliding to #5 with a 10.64% loss and Seven dropping from it's debut to #8 although it only lost 24.56% But the Barbie album wasn't the only project to smash this week as NewJeans' second EP manage to get all 6 tracks to chart, boosting up their s/t track up by 48.67% and getting a modest gian Super Shy of 24.35%. And after a full week of tracking, the Post Malone remix for Dial Drunk rocketed up 97.31%. We also got Top debuts from Ice Spice, Chris Stapleton's comeback single White Horse, 3 tracks from Barbie including Speed Drive which is Charli's biggest crossover song in years and the hilarious I'm Just Ken. Oh and some gross pro-gun song also debuted at #14 but nevermind that shit, let's all just be in awe of Barbie and NewJeans. The only losers I'll highlight are I Can See You falling out of the Top 10 as it dropped by 25.78% in streams - an expected fall for the vault song, the original Dial Drunk collapsing by 29.17%, and Overdrive which did drop by 40.94% but should rebound a bit with Post's new album. Notable Gains:Dance the Night - 117% Barbie World - 100% Dial Drunk Remix - 97% What Was I Made For? - 56% New Jeans - 49% Super Shy - 24% From the Start - 20% Tennessee Orange - 17% Need a Favor - 15% Princess Diana - 14% Religiously - 13%

Radio Reacts to Jason Aldeanβs βTry That in a Small Townβ As It Climbs the Country Airplay Chart "Historically, country has waded into controversy, and it will again," says consultant Joel Raab.
BY JIM ASKERSSince CMT pulled the video for Jason Aldeanβs βTry That in a Small Townβ after three days in rotation, as reported by Billboard July 18, a firestorm of publicity about the clipβs intent and political messaging has followed. Sales and streaming surges catapulted the single to No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, dated July 29. The song, released in May, scored the biggest sales week for a country song in more than 10 years, up 27,625% to 228,000 sold July 14-20, according to Luminate. It also vaulted by 547% to 11.6 million U.S. streams. How is that translating to country radio? On the Aug. 5 dated Country Airplay chart, the song, on Macon/Broken Bow, sports a 21% gain to 7.9 million impressions July 21-27, as it holds at No. 25. Says consultant Joel Raab, who advises programmers in both blue and red states, βStations that I work with are largely sticking with the song. Listeners are asking for it, and there are very few objections to playing it. One station I work with did pull it for a short time because a policeman had been killed in their town. Another station was doing a country fair and one listener hadnβt even heard the song, but said heβd stop listening if his station didnβt play it. βMuch of the reaction is similar to what happened when Morgan Wallen was banned from radio [in 2021],β Raab continues. βFans are afraid Jason will be banned, too. Thatβs not going to happen, though I do applaud him for editing his video.β Raab further muses, βThis song reminds me of when Merle Haggard sang βThe Fightinβ Side of Me,β which appealed to the pro-Vietnam War, conservative-leaning part of the country, and contains the line, βIf you donβt love it, leave it.β It was a huge hit at the time. Historically, country has waded into controversy, and it will again, particularly if itβs profitable.β High FiveMeanwhile, Luke Combsβ βFast Carβ tops Country Airplay for a fifth total and consecutive week (33.8 million, down 3%). The remake of Tracy Chapmanβs 1988 Hot 100 top 10 extends its record for the longest Country Airplay reign among covers of pop hits. The update also becomes Combsβ fifth of 16 Country Airplay No. 1s to rule for five weeks or longer. He logged his longest command with βBeautiful Crazy,β which dominated for seven frames beginning in March 2019.
