Back in the 90s & early 00s BB did coordinate the BBMAs with the YE Charts. But then the awards aired in mid December & the cutoff was November's last Saturday. This is a super short chart year & BB might should bring this to 52 weeks by adding in 2022s last 3 weeks. I feel fairly sure, like 1990 & 91, future YE rankings will differ from what we see given those Decembers.

I'm sure it was a business decision. It's been widely speculated that the BBMAs will now replace the AMAs as the major music awards show for November, so this will just accommodate that timeframe moving forward. It's less than ideal of an already less than ideal situation, but I could see getting used to it after a while.

Are the year-end charts (apart from this one) actually cut short? I was always under the impression that they were a full 52-53 weeks and that every week counts towards a year-end chart. It's just that they don't line up with the calendar years.

I'm pretty surprised by this news though. I always thought, if they were ever to change it, they would change it to January-December, not go in the other direction!

The year-end charts from now on will probably more closely align with a school year rather than a calendar year.

The wording from the article seems to clearly indicate the year-end charts will align with the dates for the awards and will indeed be cut short (but who really knows what they'll do, I guess we won't fully find out until the year-end charts come out). It would be odd if they don't, because those last three weeks could possibly change the rankings (especially with the release of 1989 TV, etc.), so it would look weird if they give out the awards and then the year-end published rankings look different. And yes, with the way things are going, it's much more likely the cutoff will continue to move in the opposite direction rather than align with an actual calendar year!
