The album was dropping in about a month and Training Season was kind of just... floating on. Very modest radio increases and lukewarm streams. It was 100% certain by that point it was not going even going to be a Break My Heart-sized hit and they needed something bigger to launch the album off of. Plus, Taylor was about to release the week after and maybe they were trying to sneak one more single in before she dropped.

It wasn't a bad move necessarily. It's just that, in hindsight, they really didn't have anything better than Training Season on the album, especially for US radio.

'Training Season' was doing better on streaming than this has done during its run - which is to say, TS was still charting in the Spotify top 200 at all when the label decided to pull the plug and go all-in on this instead. They could've kept this a European-only single a la 'Physical' or 'Hallucinate' because TS was doing fine. It was still chugging along, not flying up radio but not treading water either, and as evidenced by its Spotify performance it wasn't nothing. That song should really have been allowed to keep going, and if the label really wanted to push this worldwide they didn't need to kill TS to do it. If streaming wasn't going to be on board regardless, then they may as well have just sent this to US radio later with TS having become a solid airplay follow-up to 'Houdini'.

would training season have done better then this ? perhaps slightly but honestly i don't think there was a particularly big hit on radical optimism, even houdini had more legs then its initial numbers suggested. whoever she worked with on future nostalgia was clearly stirring up magic because i genuinely think the first 8 songs of that album (i guess minus pretty please too) were catchier and probably better then the entirety of her other two albums and she would benefit from going back to work with that person

I think she can. Her team has to be strategic about it though. I don't think they should release another single from the original album though.

She still could but who knows. Anyone can with the right hit and goodwill. Radio supported this song way more than they should’ve, I’m sure they’ll support her next lead.

Well they kinda promoted it poorly. Houdini wasn’t near its peak and then they sandwiched its chart run with Illusion. It has been a messy era.

That peak for TS is painful because it’s my favorite song on the album. That song deserved a better rollout and a better video.
