Even though it gets brought up time and time again, I don’t think ageism applies to pop radio the way it does to most other mediums. Regardless of that, its hesitation to play Beyonce higher is still strange considering her wide appeal across so many demographics. I assume music fans in their 20s (who are primarily CHR’s demo) have also been streaming her last couple albums? I’d even go as far to assume that it’s possible she might not even be as polarizing as Taylor, yet she still struggles to go that extra step on pop radio.

I don't think ageism is what is causing this specifically to stagnate at all (though a case could be made generally speaking). Honestly the song in general lost a lot of steam, as has been spoken on previously, so it's not surprising to see radio follow suit. Still a nice placement for her at this stage in her career regardless. Honestly after hearing the artistry in the album, you can tell why they chose this as the lead. It's one of the "catchiest", most broad-appealing, radio-ready songs on the album (but also strangely one of the weakest artistically speaking).

Besides, 39 years and 9 months (Nicki's age when SFG came out) is effectively 40 years. It's not like PDs go, 'There's 17 days till X's 40th birthday, this can smash, but if it came out 17 days later, we would've given it a hard time'

Haha, well that’s not what I was saying. Just that it’s statistically a fact that after 40 CHR comes down pretty hard on songs they will take near the top. I doubt it’s all just coincidental.

fwiw the ageism with pop radio had gotten better (?) lately. i think partly because while in the past the younger new generation of pop stars quickly came to fill in the position of the ageing stars, these days the new stars' staying power isnt quite as strong and less numerous (we have like, what? Three? New breakout female pop stars in the past 5 years) while the older ones is still going strong and in some cases even pull in new younger audiences.
