Anyone know the labels reasoning? Greed? Stupidity? Artists and songwriters aren't being paid fair royalties. TikTok pays a fraction compared to other platforms. If it's greed, it's definitely TikTok. The bigger deal that hasn't been covered much is that it include Universal Music Publishing, which means a huge number of songs that are on non-UMG labels must also be muted/removed. I'm glad UMG is standing up to them. It's shocking when you compare social media + streaming royalties to what artists/songwriters got back in the physical media days. For every *viral* song that benefits from TikTok, there's thousands more that are being used almost for free. And yet, don't you think it's a bit draconian to remove all of their songs entirely from TikTok, preventing their artists and songwriters from getting any money whatsoever? Ironically, they're hurting the very parties they're trying to help.

Ironically, they're hurting the very parties they're trying to help. If they didn't pull the content when the contract expired, TikTok would have no reason to negotiate. These negotiations have been going on for months. This isn't really different than networks blacking out stations on cable networks or the WGA/SAG strikes. It's always a risk, but a short-term blackout v. a long-term better royalty rate is worth. I'd find it hard to believe that the majority of songwriters/artists don't support this action.

"Carnival" is a bop to me. Idc. Well I respect your opinion, I honestly think it’s the worst Kanye album track to be promoted as a single. Lyrically it's certainly not his best, as it's primarily sexual in nature, but that production and vibe slap! I love atmospheric songs like that. Reminded me of "Power" in that it is a big/epic sounding song. I personally love those, but I understand how to some it can be a bit jarring/loud. lol

cant believe Kanye's really close to getting his first lead credit #1 in 17 years, especially after all the neo-Nazi shit. Just more evidence cancel culture does not exist irl. People have to realize the cancel audience usually has to actually have some overlap with the artist's demo. Kanye, Morgan, etc's audience is mostly straight men. They don't care about cancel culture. The people who were outraged over them were majority people who rarely (or absolutely never) listen to their music to even begin with. Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift doing something like what they did would have a different effect simply because their fanbase is more concerned with ethics/politics and those artists have made their brand about being 'good/kind people'.

Lizzo is the only artist who has noticeably been “cancelled” - and still barely, her streams are down but she’s still presenting at the Grammy’s etc despite her vile sexual assault accusations The only reason hers is mildly successful is because her audience for her h&m empowerment music is upper class white women, the only sizable demographic to really care about this stuff.

I think cancel culture isn't really a thing anymore. 90% of people hate it. And I can't think of anybody who has been successfully cancelled in years. It worked for a while in the mid-10's when it was a new thing and people didn't know how to react to it. R. Kelly is a fairly recent example (I would say by 2019) of someone who has absolutely been canceled. More so because his audience probably skews much more female than West's, and would care much more about the things he did. Justin Timberlake is in the midst of a cancellation now for much of the same, though obviously less extreme, reasons.

Kelly is spending the rest of his life in prison for child rape and trafficking, that's way beyond cancellation. And Kanye's actions have resulted in billions in lost wealth, dropped from his label and every endorsement, being de-platformed from major music services, essentially blacklisted at radio, and may never be invited to another award show or even receive a nomination. No reputable brand will touch him anymore. That's a pretty solid cancellation, even if his new collab album is doing big streaming numbers.

I'm genuinely curious, is there anybody on here who's casually streaming Carnival? Like somebody who isn't a Kanye die hard and is just streaming Carnival while ignoring the rest of the album? Since at this point those are the people making it such a big hit and I don't get it at all, I genuinely want to understand why this song became such a juggernaut To be posting these consistently massive streaming numbers for weeks now, clearly it's general public not just Kanye stans. Radio and digital sales are keeping Beyonce above him. If he releases a music video, he's probably getting the #1.
