So strange the way her albums can’t seem to have legs past the second single. Her team should figure out how to get her album cycles to last more than 4 months! I’d love for her to one day have an era that, I don’t know, passes the year mark of a promo cycle.

Dangerous Woman lasted just over a year - from April 2 2016 when Dangerous Woman debuted to April 15 2017 when Everyday fell off the Hot 100.

Strange that radio will send total flops by Dua, Miley, Selena, etc. top 10 with no hesitation. But they have an issue with this? Unlike those songs, at least this had decent streaming at one point, lol.

They could have done more with both albums, as well as every album since then! I guess I’m just hopeful.

As much as I like the remix, the original has always been one of those songs I skip after the first verse. No reason to listen to the whole thing.

Honestly, this is an absolutely terrible CHR performance by her standards and coupled with yes, and I think shows she’s definitely slipped this era. Before ES she had sent every main album single to the top 5 since My Everything with relative ease, except Into You which still hit #7. She had a 10 song top 3 streak too before YA as far as album singles go. POV somehow hit top 3 with absolutely zero effort from them for a single push.
She pushed and promoted the hell out of this on the other hand, probably more done for it than I’ve seen for a 3rd single in awhile. Definitely not good all things considered. That said, I maintain title track and bye were the other big hits on the album besides WCBF, and they ignored both so…

I’m not sure if she and her team realized that it was a risk releasing TBIM instead of a more pop track bye or ES, even if it was doing very well on streaming. Maybe they did, I dunno. But they shot their shot and it didn’t work out. However I thought that they were/are prepared to release bye or ES after this, to get back on track. If they don’t and now chicken out, then yeah I agree, what a waste of 2 or (counting Supernatural) even 3 great radio-ready tracks.

Cause she's not promoting shxt lol. I'm highkey swole she stopped it after announcing the remix, because this really could've went farther than where it's at.

However I can recall both DW and Everyday not going top 5 on CHR. DW peaked at #6-7 and Everyday outside the top 15

She released CDs, vinyls, performed live on TV, released a music video, dropped a remix, promoted it to four radio formats. The whole "she needs to promote" thing does not apply here whatsoever. She did what she needed to do and it just didn't connect on radio.

I’m baffled too. I thought this would be an easy top 3 for her. I still feel it was the clear choice for single 3 and don’t see the other options doing much better.

I always saw this song as a risk because, Bruno Mars and 7R/Positions aside, CHR nowadays usually keeps R&B leaning songs away from the Top 5. Plus, and it must be said, the “Boy is Mine” narrative just isn’t relatable to people and she came across as selfish. Either “bye” or ES would’ve been great as a summer single IMHO. But it’s probably too late now. FWIW the album is still great, it’s her best and I still think it’s a dark horse for the Grammy AOTY.

This isn't anything new from Ari style-wise so I don't really know how much I buy that excuse. Also I'm not sure the label's done if this still hasn't hit its ceiling.

This was the best single choice, let's not create some narrative where it wasn't because it's struggling. Sometimes perfectly good single choices underperform. And given her history with third singles, this is no surprise.
But there is no world where "bye" and "ES" were gonna be some third single smashes compared to this, lol. Like come on.

The song is a little messy and lacks a strong sing-a-long hook. The R&B skew doesn’t help either, as others have mentioned. Not an in sound atm. Both bye and ES have very poppy choruses that get stuck in your head easily. Perfect for radio, even if streaming wasn’t there. But early streaming was naturally strong for both wo them needing to have any kind of viral moment like this needed. And actually, I’d argue the pre-chorus on bye is the single catchiest hook on the album.

Nah. "bye" has one of the weakest choruses on the album. And it's even more off-trend than this is. Let's go with another throwback uptempo after "yes, and?" cratered? And "ES" is another R&B-lite track in the same vein as "tbim," perfectly pleasant, just not as memorable and sleepier.
Sonically, the biggest hit left after "wcbf" and this is probably "Supernatural." But outside of personal opinions, there isn't a single reason to believe "bye" or "ES" would be doing better than this. Streaming, virality, general interest? It wasn't there for the others like it was for this track. And given that she struggles with third singles, naturally they went with the one that had the most heat.

I mean, catchiness and hit potential can always be claimed as subjective until proven a hit, but I consider myself to have a very long-time tuned in ear for potential hits. To me, both ES and bye have always sounded far catchier and poppier in their hooks than this. That’s me. I think the big thing with both of them is they’re hooky throughout, whereas this one is mostly just the chorus, which I maintain is kinda messy/monotonous.
Less subjectively, I do think bye/es streaming performances despite zero promo or virality, were quite promising as well. This song had virality from before anyone even heard it with all the social media buzz about the brandy/monica song title. Supernatural I think is in the same boat as this. It’s kinda there hook wise, but also kinda lacking. Feels a bit lightweight for smash hit.

Being a third single, it may not have reached Top 10 on BB but IMHO “bye” would at least have reached Top 10 in CHR Airplay a lot faster than this.
