Wow. I'm tapped out , yall got it😵💫😵💫😵💫 Let's not attribute this mentality to everyone who has critcisms of Katy in this thread. This clearly isn't indicative of everyone's thinking, is a one-off comment, and the poster is trolling. Please let's not feed into it. There's a few here, but yes, it's not everyone.

If it was "all hands on deck" in promoting this song, I don't understand why Capital didn't book a Today's Top Hits placement, at least.

I’m perplexed why the label didn’t intervene on both the subject matter - this isn’t 1973’s ‘I am woman, hear me *roar’ - but also the execution. Is Katy on the last album of her contract? If so, then the label doesn’t care: just be done with it and eventually release a GH package to wrap it up. This is a not an ‘A-List’ release, which is a bummer. I think a lot of us are so harsh because we’re fans and we been salivating for a major Katy comeback. Indeed, I was so perched until I saw the nonsense of "her Emancipation of Mimi" produced by Dr. Luke and the snippets... it's all been downhill from there.

I get it, there are fans in this thread who want to see the song succeed and/or taper down the rhetoric. I still think KP can find success. With that said, in all my years on Pulse (almost 15 or so), I really can't recall any songs that were so highly anticipated that were met - globally - with almost universal hate. It's not just this forum, or Twitter/X, or my circle of gay friends at the bar last night. This is a total, nearly perfect, across the board, every demographic and group --- hate (the exception is a few MAGA soccer moms who do not know about Dr Luke and/or do not care, and they love redundant female anthems and do not want things that are woke -- highly unlikely this is the market KP wants). You can of course disagree with the discord, but that doesn't mean its not true, and causing havoc to her era. Here is the first page of results when I google KP right now. Page 1. This is terrible and I know she has to be sitting at home today feeling awful about this (and I feel awful for her, because I can have empathy). I expect the drama around this song to subside in the next few days, but I think this will probably get pulled from radio fast and fall. Her team should just move onto the next song and claim this was a "promo single". However, this will be a case study for future pop girls years to come on "what not to do" for a comeback single / hit.

This clearly isn't indicative of everyone's thinking, is a one-off comment, and the poster is trolling. Please let's not feed into it. If we look past the background knowledge/expectations of the song, it's fine, surely nothing out of this world, but I think garbage is a bit of a stretch. Well, that's just it, we can't. Context is important in all reviews. If we changed/tweaked the context for any and every song, loads of songs would be received much better. Still, context aside, the song isn't far off from garbage. The lyrics are vapid and formulaic. The vocals are robotic and uninspired. The production is dated and sounds like an amalgamation of several older songs. I would say this song is objectively bad. I certainly wouldn't say it's good. It’s not trolling. It’s a valid point. She made a woman’s empowerment anthem with a sexual abuser and a stereotypical video and the song is out of touch for the current socio-political climate. Every single review I’ve seen has been unusually scathing and savage. Did she think her bad behavior and poor decisions weren’t going to catch up to her? Aside from the song being awful, so is she and she’s getting what she deserves (again)! I told not one lie.

Dr. L*ke aside, the quality of the song is not good which warrants a negative discussion. But even not taking the quality into account, people are still allowed to be upset and negative about a song written/produced by a rapist without it being dumbed down to “projecting.” It gets dumbed down to “projecting” when it didn’t matter what she released, y’all would’ve dragged it no matter what it was. Completely understand people being off put by her working with him, but some of the takes/reviews of this acting like it’s a flaming pile of sh*t is a bit dramatic tbh. It’s underwhelming, should’ve had more of a punch for a comeback, but if we are going specifically on the song itself, if this was on the back half of Teenage Dream as an album track, I highly doubt it would be receiving the hate it has.

Is it just me or do I hear Walk Away by Kelly Clarkson in the chorus? I can hear a similar cadence in "It's a woman's world" and "if you're looking for attention". I just don't feel like this is true at all for most of the people with criticisms. Most people don't have some vandetta against Katy or just because she worked with Luke were coming into this era poised and ready to hate whatever she put out. I do not genuinely think that's a reasonable assumption to make and feels dismissive of genuine, valid, opinions of the song itself. If she had released a much better song, even one of the songs previewed from 143, I highly believe the general reaction would have been better WITH people knowing about her working with Luke. I just think the fact that she worked with him PLUS the song itself being bad makes things worse. And of course maybe it would have been accepted better if it were tacked onto the back half of Teenage Dream because that was a completely different time and vapid pop music was in vogue back then. I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make with that, other than trying to invalidate people's opinions.

If it was on the back half of an album that was a hit a decade ago? Sure. Album filler from a decade ago does not equate lead single in 2024. Katy and her team know this. And while she would have caught heat for anything with Dr. Luke, quality will always win over a handful of dissenters (regardless how I feel on that topic, most listeners do not follow who produces a song). Look at the recent hits he has for Saweetie ("Best Friend", "Tap In", "Icy Chain"), Doja Cat (Half of her discography), Latto ("Big Energy"), Nicki Minaj ("Super Freaky Girl") -- the list goes on and on. You can have dissenters and still have hits.

I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make with that, other than trying to invalidate people's opinions. Entire point is song quality, I.e. the chorus, versus, make up of a song, melody. If it would've been received fine in a different time period, then the song itself is not garbage. If the song itself was garbage. It would've been garbage then too right? That's the point, which you insinuate that it would've been fine then as well, like I am referring to. So I'm just having a hard time seeing how something would've been fine then, and but garbage now, if we are solely going on the song itself. Please do not try to label me as trying to invalidate other's opinions when that is not the intent.

Entire point is song quality, I.e. the chorus, versus, make up of a song, melody. If it would've been received fine in a different time period, then the song itself is not garbage. A song's quality is still contingent on a myriad of factors, including things like context and relevance. It sounding dated isn't the only reason the song is objectively bad. Personally I don't think the song would have been good back in 2010 either, just wouldn't be criticized in the same ways most likely. Saying you personally feel people are being exaggerative of how bad the song is, is one thing, but you insinuating their opinions on the song's quality is disingenuous or even mainly influenced by outside circumstances is a bit of a stretch. I'm not saying your intent is to invalidate people's opinions, I'm telling you that's how it's coming across. :)

You know I'm perplexed that Katy, someone who is known for having great pop songs, and the pop bible with Teenage Dream, released a song without a bridge or a final chorus. I understand it's not 2010 anymore and shorter songs have become a trend but there's been plenty of 3+ minute pop songs with bridges and 3 chorus's becoming huge hits lately, look at Chappell Roan's charting hits right now.

Why do female artists get so much flack? Katy is doing her best. I like Womans World and Katy. I bet many songs on her album are great. Let's just enjoy new Katy music and have fun with it.

The lack of playlisting almost makes me think they're saving the big push for the next single (and maybe they are), but then why give this a radio deal? The management of her career continues to totally bewilder me. She's had plenty of great songs over the past decade, but it's been one awful decision after another since the Prism era. CTTR and NRO are the only instances where they've gotten it mostly right (as far as single choice AND rollout AND music video)--everything else has just been missed opportunities.

Thought I've seen it all but that is just so vicious. And you're saying all of that over... a pop song?

So I’ll say it again, I hope she has another breakdown. She’s the one breaking down over her unsuccessful pop songs. She’s mean and making a women’s empowerment anthem with a known rapist and abuser. She’s trash. Wasn’t she also mocking Britney’s legitimate breakdown? Yeah she’s due for her karma for sure. Britney gave her the proper response: Her mouth speaks from that which fills her heart ❤️ Luke 6:45

I remember when Pulse was a fun place to post and people weren't in their feelings/defensive over every opposing viewpoint. Sheesh. Anyway, I totally get the "tone deaf" accusations - I'm personally not a fan of her working with Dr. Luke either. But at the end of the day, the general public aren't as aware of that nor have they heard the album snippets. Taking the song/video at face value, as most people will, I don't think it's as bad as some are making it out to be. Are the general public even aware the song exists though? People keep talking about the “general public” in relation to who will care about her working with Luke. But that aspect of this era so far* has dominated nearly every discussion I’ve seen about it so far - either people commenting on how stupid it is that she worked with him, or people saying they don’t care or “but the general public won’t care” but they still talk about it so clearly it matters. *up until the release of this song, because now every discussion I’m seeing is about how tone deaf or poorly executed the song is - or people defending why it’s not tone deaf and is well done. Either way, the discussion has been entirely offense/defense and that isn’t a good place to be at all.

And it looks like a lot of pop stars who deserve a reckoning are getting their due. You're deranged. Anyone who has followed pop music for the past 20 years and has knitted together a frontal lobe can see Katy is easily one of the sweetest and most humble people in this industry, from the way she takes time to interact with fans face to face to the way she makes a conscious effort to reach out and offer any advice to new pop girls whose careers rapidly blow up in order to safeguard them, to consistently showing love to her peers' releases and commending their talents, to the way she interacts with her team/staff. We live in such a shitty world where the nicest people always get the most shit thrown at them by empty husks like yourself who are only brave enough to lash out like this if they know their target is of a more non-confrontational disposition.
