Drake is obviously still the biggest artist after Taylor, but the fact that his last multiweek #1 was in 2018 is very telling. His 2020s material is really...something. weeks at #1: ______________ 2010-2015____________ What's My Name 1
______________ 2016-2018____________ God's Plan 11 One Dance 10 In My Feelings 10 Work 9 Nice For What 8______________ 2019-2024____________ Slime You Out 1 What's Next 1 First Person Shooter 1 Way 2 Sexy 1 Toosie Slide 1 Jimmy Cooks 1 Wait For U 1
he's yet to have a #1 with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 weeks at #1. and he only scored multiweek #1s in the span of two and half years, when basically every 3rd week at #1 was by Drake. Also, he had a one-week #1 in 2018, but he wasn't credited (Sicko Mode) lol.

Weeks at #1 for a song feels like such an honestly arbitrary stat though.
Ariana has also had all her #1’s since TUN era only spend 1 week at #1 (except for Die for You which is just her name being slapped on the credits of an already smash hit via remix so). I wouldn’t say she doesn’t still get solid hits or whatever. I think at most it just says she’s not at her career peak which isn’t really shocking.
Her Hot 100 reign is actually really similar to Drake’s, where for their first few albums they always had consistent smashes but could never get #1, then once they got their first lead artist #1s they smashed really hard, and now the past few years post-peak they get these 1-weekers . They still (mostly) become decent sized hits and also in a way it feels like it’s just making up count for the other smashes that never went #1.
But even names like SZA, Billie, etc *only* ever reached #1 on Hot 100 for a song with a week. Doesn’t mean they don’t get big hits, just multiple weeks at #1 is hard and depends on many factors. Hell, “Not Like Us” only has 2 weeks #1 after the noise it’s made. Meanwhile “Mood” got 8 weeks #1 and never felt like some huge unavoidable smash and doesn’t in retrospect either. Sometimes it’s just timing and so many other factors lol.

It’s funny because up until now, I was always under the assumption Kendrick was among the most successful rappers. Obviously not as big as Drake but for some reason I thought he did fairly well on the charts despite not being a big crossover act. I was surprised to see that TPAB didn’t have any Top 50 hits. Despite all that, I hadn’t ever seen his success downplayed until recently. Is he not actually a big-name rapper? The Drake-Kendrick feud of 2024 got reignited when Jcole said that Drake, Kendrick, Jcole were the big 3 of the rap. Kendrick even by his enemies was considered a huge artist. But he wasn't a big hit maker. His albums were huge, had great critical acclaim and he was a very well regarded live act. But he released pretty rarely, had very few collabs , and his albums weren't dependent on hits. He had a big passionate cult fanbase. Lastly, he was basically considered as the consensus number 1 rapper in the rap community. Good kid, m.a.ad city, damn, tpab have all had ridiculous longevity on the album charts. Good kid was #30 on the year end billboard chart despite being more than 10 years old. He is also a big vinyl seller in a way that no other rappers are. There's a reason why Drake wanted to pick a fight with him. Kendrick had the respect and love that Drake didn't really have despite his greater commercial success.

I hardly ever hear anyone talking about Kendrick until this beef. Just because Drake wasn't getting multi week #1s I was still hearing his name nonstop always. Yeah, when an album drops, myself included, may check it out of Kendricks, but I find it hard to find him that relevant as a whole in the recent years. He's had a few big hits but they were also shared with other big stars like SZA for example. and idc what anyone thinks- Mr Morale was not a good album at all to me. I never have gone back to re-visit it. I have nothing against Kendrick, and I'd pick Drake over him all day but it is just wild to me how many people here can't wait to write Drake off when he has not released anything besides some throwaway collabs since the beef. At the very least, let's see what his next project does and for that matter, what Kendrick's does as well. What does your singular experience have to do with what is true in general/nationally? Like I said, we will see what happens when both of their next albums drop :) What does this mean exactly?

Saying Kendrick wasn't a a common name in mainstream pop/rap until the beef is actually insane. Damn was the album with the second most streams in a single week when it was released, only behind More Life. Mr Morale and the Big Steppers was the 4th biggest debuting album (in streams) of 2022, with the only rap album ahead of his being Drake's. He's arguably the second most succesful rapper of the streaming era, behind Drake - I don't know if I'd go that far (I'd probably put Travis above him), but at absolute minimum he's top 5 biggest rappers before the beef. I will throw out that idk if Drake is still top two biggest artists in the industry - he's obviously still one of the biggest names there is, but I do wonder if Wallen's surpassed him recently. He surpassed him on Spotify streams, and while Drake rules Apple Wallen does well there too and dominates on Amazon. The five biggest rappers of the streaming era are (without ordering): Drake, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Travis Scott and Post Malone (pre. 2021). Juice WRLD and XXXTENTACION deserve honourable mentions as well.
Besides, hip-hop reached an inflection point in its popularity four years ago.
The Golden Age of Melodic Rap is probably over (late 2014 to late 2022) and its chief protagonist is at the lowest point of his entire career. There's absolutely no guarantee at all that Drake will ever reclaim the prescient hold he had on pop culture during this period.
