Ok this is off topic but has been confusing me for awhile -- why do people sometimes refer to Lady Gaga as GG? I fully thought this was a typo and people meant to write LG, but I've seen GG a bunch of times and am utterly confounded. My guess is because some write it for fun — GaGa. Lady GaGa. So GG for short. The Queen song where LG got her name, is also capitalized ‘Radio Ga Ga.’

I am still very much enjoying this track, but personally Christmas music is taking over my own song playlists, so not listening to it as much as I wpuld have if it was released any other time of the year.
At the end of the day she is riding quite high with the combined effect of DWAS and Disease being played on radio pretty well. The only misfire to me feels to be the music video because its a case of “what it could have been” which I dream of.

1. "Just Dance" 2. "Bad Romance" 3. "Disease" 4. "Applause" 5. "Born This Way" 6. "Stupid Love" 7. "Perfect Illusion"
Ask me again in a year and "Disease" could be #1 or #2. I can confidently say I enjoy it more than 4-7.

In Jan, after the Christmas song domination, I think Disease will re-peak on the Hot 100.

TIHTY didn't get an actual radio push so we can excuse that one. Yeah, her only officially pushed CHR singles to miss top 20 are GUY and 911. Which is still really impressive, even though they haven’t wanted to take her top ten very much for so long.

leads
#1 Just Dance 10/10 (forever a bop, pop perfection) Shallow 9/10 (amazing song, but I think I like ARUTW more) #2 Bad Romance 8/10 (it's a great song, classic, but still sick of it) #3 Applause 7.5/10 (I like this now much more than 10 years ago) #4 Born This Way 6.5/10 (it's really fine, great choice for the lead) #5 Disease 6.5/10 (I like it, but I know she can do much better with this sound) #6 Perfect Illusion 5.5/10 (this is boring sorry, can't believe this was the lead) #7 Stupid Love 5/10 (not my sound)
her 2nd singles are usually better than her leads imo.

Plastic Doll says hi Not this being the first song mentioned when the majority of Chromatica are easily better, at least to me, haha. Free Woman, 911, Sour Candy, Enigma, and Babylon come to mind as potential singles. However, if we’re really talking…Replay, specifically was the surefire hit in the waiting. I don’t know how Gaga and her team/label skipped over that one. I feel like it could’ve been a strong lead single even.

Replay was the hit that got away. I’m convinced if Chromatica didn’t come out in the middle of the pandemic and at the height of the BLM protests, it could’ve done better. The album just had bad luck with timing that caused it to be overshadowed by major world events.

I don't think it was the pandemic that sunk Chromatica's fortunes, at least in the states. As much as I appreciate Gaga's art-pop dance music, and that album, her brand of dance pop's success on the charts was really limited to that 5-year "new artist" phase of her career. This is evident to me given her track record in the last 10 years. With the exception of her collab with Ariana Grande in 2020, "Applause" in 2013 was her last big hit that wasn't a ballad. "Stupid Love" got her a top 5 peak out of fan anticipation but it tumbled in its 2nd week and never took off. We don't know how "Rain On Me" (which I LOVE) would have faired without Ariana's inclusion, but I think it's fair to say that Ari's presence (and fans) elevated that song's chart positions significantly (i.e. its #1 peak that week).
Now we have Disease failing to catch on, while her love song collaboration with Bruno is smashing.
I'm not saying it's impossible for her to get another dance pop hit, even if it's another Bloody Mary fueled by a viral TikTok dance that started in a tv show or something, but the odds are not in her favor. Pop radio is still showing her dance pop love, at least with first singles, but the songs just aren't clicking overall. And that's ok. It's a fairly standard arc for the female dance pop star in this country. Pop radio audiences change rapidly. She's still going to sell out arenas and make movies and hopefully more soundtracks. And hopefully never stops making dance music, either.
This need for pop chart success just isn't crucial at this phase in her career, but it continues to act as some kind of validation for fans - and this applies to all veteran artists.

Ehh, I think Chromatica was cut short a bit by Covid. It is what it is.
As for this, Gaga has always tried to push a new sound and rarely has caved to the current sound. That is old news. She's always been a trendsetter, and if the trend didn't catch on, I don't think she cares that much. Joanne and Artpop ended up being great albums that came out a couple years before those sounds were bigger on radio.
----
ANYWAYS, the charts are interesting right now. Radio is such a strange thing to follow these days.
You have artists like Charli XCX who has one of the biggest moments in pop stardom I can remember, but yet she doesn't even have a top 10 hit on Billboard or CHR/Pop yet from it, and has barely moved 1m album units. Then you have artists like Tate McRae who just had multiple 1b+ streamed songs, and her newest one "I'm Ok, I'm OK" barely has over 100m streams on Spotify. Then you have artists like Addison Rae, who is barely a name in the industry yet, with a sleeper hit "Diet Pepsi", with almost 200m streams now, and she likely won't get past 15 on CHR or Top 50 on Billboard. Last example, you have Meghan Trainor "Criminal" sitting at #13 on CHR/Pop radio and her song has ONLY 21m streams on Spotify. Like, what? I can go on and on with this (like "Apt" getting a bit of a shaft on radio, despite huge numbers everywhere else). None of it really makes sense.
Radio has been out of touch for a while, and CHR/Pop keeps remaining to be out of touch. I am glad this did what it could here.

I don’t think Chromatica was as obsurd or off-centre as people seem to claim. Yeah there were some songs that wouldn’t work as singles but “Stupid Love” was pretty basic as far as Gaga’s pop singles go. It didn’t light the charts on fire but it did well enough. We don’t know what could have been without covid but I definitely think the era could have been bigger than it was has she been able to execute it to its full potential, as the plan seemed to be. It will always be a case of what would have been for me, but at least we got a pretty solid album out of it.

RE: Charli, '360' did go top 10 on Pop and Apple is close too so IDK what you mean there. No top 10 on the Hot 100 is accurate, but radio has been onboard.

For Charli, 360 was actually bigger hit on radio that it was in streaming? Correct me if I'm wrong.
The BRAT era is big because she had several songs doing remotely well at the same time or in a very short period of time. However, in terms of Hot 100 impact, it was definitely on the mild side.

Her excerpt from Vogue describing the album is “unserious” and fun for a party or any situation don’t describe Disease at all to me lol. Sounds like a new version of The Fame honestly (which I would be here for). Would make this as the lead all the more bizarre though.

Wws my post passive agressive? I didn’t intend it to be. It was partially in response to you saying you don’t think Covid sunk Chromatica’s fortunes and that her brand of pop wouldn’t catch on regardless. The first point we don’t have to agree on, I was simply stating my alternate viewpoint. The second point was more around I don’t know if I’d have seen the music as wildly different as something like Dua Lipa’s, who had a massive year in 2020. Something like “Free Woman” could have smashed given a non-pandemic/promoted situation. But it’s also neither here nor there. I know there’s more than just how something sounds that goes into whether audiences are interested or not. But Gaga went into 2020 coming off of a huge win with ASIB so the hype was potentially there. It’s also possible that audiences in general outside of her fans just aren’t interested in her brand of crazy, with or without a pandemic. And that’s perhaps what you were saying anyway.
