If a single song is so big that it overshadows an entire career, yes, it's a problem. It’s really not but okay.

Gaga rules Pop Airplay for the first time since the chart dated April 9, 2011, with “Born This Way.” She rewrites the mark for returning to No. 1 after the longest break: 13 years, seven months and two weeks. (In between, she logged six top 10s.) Mariah Carey previously held the distinction, with a wait of nine years, four months and three weeks between “One Sweet Day” with Boyz II Men in 1995-96, and “We Belong Together” in 2005.

Oh next week it is - another 3% drop would give ABS 213 points and with 1% increase DWAS will be at 215. COME THROUGH LADY MARS! Come through quick maths hubba hubba!

So happy for Gaga! Also funny to see that Mariah and Gaga took so long to return after two inescapable smashes, rather than a lesser known song. You just never know when your pop radio fortune will fade (and when it may return!).

You just never know when your pop radio fortune will fade (and when it may return!). Well Gaga had TEOG, You and I, and Applause for relatively big CHR hits not long after BTW, and Mariah had Always Be My Baby (#2) and Forever after OSD. So they both had some residual big hits on CHR after those last #1 for awhile. But it is really interesting to look at all the big pop artists over the decades, especially women, who start off huge on CHR, and then once they fall off, that’s kind of it outside of maybe a brief comeback stretch. It’s a pretty common pattern. CHR seems very prone to just being “done” with an artist when they’re done and rarely looking back. A lot of ageism for sure.

at Who dropping 28% in streams the day it crossed 1 billion streams on Spotify i will never consider that group's numbers seriously, the amount of fraudulence and "hits but unknown songs" they produced

If the assumption is that people who listen to CHR are a younger demographic, they’re going to want to listen to their generation’s artists. Obviously there are many exceptions or artists who appeal to multiple generations over time but for most 15-25 year olds, listening to a 40+ artist who’d been making music for 20 years and whose early music might have been something their parents listened to, there’s not as much connectivity there.

Morgan Wallen Notches Record Fifth Country Airplay No. 1 in a Single Year With ‘Lies Lies Lies’ Plus, Tim McGraw ties for the most top 10s in the chart's history.
By Jim Asker
11/15/2024Morgan Wallen earns his 15th No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as “Lies Lies Lies” ascends a spot to the top of the tally dated Nov. 23. During the Nov. 8-14 tracking week, it drew 30.3 million audience impressions, according to Luminate. The song was written by Jessie Jo Dillon, Josh Miller, Daniel Ross and Chris Tompkins, and produced by Joey Moi. It’s the lead single from an upcoming Wallen album. Notably, Wallen rounds up his fifth Country Airplay chart-topper of 2024 – marking the first time that an act has amassed five No. 1s in a single year dating to the list’s January 1990 launch. “Lies Lies Lies” follows “Cowgirls” (featuring Ernest), which led for a week in in July; Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help” (featuring Wallen; four weeks, June-July); “Man Made a Bar” (featuring Eric Church; one week, April); and Thomas Rhett’s “Mamaw’s House” (featuring Wallen; one week, March). Luke Combs (2021) and Garth Brooks (1991 and 1993) each collected four new Country Airplay No. 1s in single years, while Wallen ranked at the summit with four songs in 2023, including “You Proof,” which first led in 2022. (Brooks remains the only act to notch as many as four new No. 1s all as a lead artist in a single year, in both 1991 and 1993). McGraw Ties for Most Top 10sTim McGraw claims his own slice of Country Airplay history, scoring his record-tying 61st top 10 as “One Bad Habit” bounds 11-5 (24 million, up 40%). Marc Beeson, Aaron Eshuis and Tony Lane wrote the song, which McGraw produced with Byron Gallimore. McGraw matches Kenny Chesney and George Strait for the most Country Airplay top 10s. Alan Jackson is next with 51, followed by Keith Urban (44), Toby Keith (42) and Brooks & Dunn (41). Plus, with “One Bad Habit” climbing to No. 5, McGraw pads his lead for the most top five Country Airplay hits: 55. Strait is second with 53 and Chesney has 50. McGraw last reached the Country Airplay top tier with “Standing Room Only,” which hit No. 2 last November. He earned his first top 10 with the No. 8-peaking “Indian Outlaw” in April 1994. Follow-up “Don’t Take the Girl” became his first of 29 No. 1s when it dominated for its first of two frames the next month. He most recently led with two hits in 2016: his own “Humble and Kind” (one week, that June) and as featured on Florida Georgia Line’s “May We All” (two weeks, December).

Why doesn't Bruno and Gaga just released an acoustic lyrics video or 1 dance version. This way Trashy falls from #1.

Not everyone is analyzing charts like we do, and it's increasingly common for well established acts to stop really putting too much care into stuff like that.

Yeah, that’s true. It’s just interesting though when you look at a lot of huge CHR artists of the past and so many have this massive string of hits, and then boom, it’s done. A lot don’t even have that long of a span in terms of years either. Maybe like 6-7, but in some cases like Gaga it’s as short as 2. There’s also a pattern with a lot of those though of having that comeback stretch too. In someone like Britney’s case, the comeback stretch on CHR was much more prolific than her original hey-day on the format. It’s just interesting how quick pop radio can be to decide you’re not “trendy” anymore. Certainly more so than the other formats or sales/streaming.

A lot of this can be said of success in the music industry in general though. Having CHR hits just goes along with other measurements of a pop star's career, which in general rise fairly quickly, are huge for a relatively brief period of time, often just a few years, and then fade fairly rapidly.

The only cases I can think of in years and years and years that legit said “payola” on radio are a couple Taylor ones. Most notably LWYMMD, which was the most blatant case of label payola I’ve ever seen. But otherwise, this payola mess is always such a reach. Aren't those first week radio deals that most big artists get essentially payola? I guess? But not really, since that’s very transparent and well known. I’m talking about the f**ckery when a song has clearly peaked and then magically it has the most miraculous bullet imaginable to get a new peak (usually aiming for #1), then immediately plummets afterwards.

According to TOTC's final prediction, the difference between ASB and DWAS is FOUR points. Next week is going to be exciting. I’ve already said it in the CHR thread, but I’m really irked at HAC not coming through for DWAS like they should be. It should absolutely be #1 there when it already is on CHR. That little bit of airplay boost could totally make the difference in #1 on the h100 rn.

Well life moves on and we find the strength to move forward. Change will happen regardless and we have to push on.
But that's enough about accepting the recent news, let's look at the Top 10 because it was a busy week. The biggest and the one most people expected is that we have a new #1 and the first ever for Gracie Abrams. That's So True tops the charts with n 18.39% gain. Even though it may hit a pause with Christmas coming in a month, this is still a huge win for Abrams who I think most didn't expect would have a hit this strong, especially one that's a monster on streaming, there'd be no stopping it if it wasn't for the holidays. Rebounding back to #2 is Die With A Smile which saw a brief 5.93% as it continues to be a hit with real strong legs. The real surprise for me is actually at #3 and breaking into the Top 3 is Gigi Perez's Sailor Song which was up 9.61%. It's been really interesting to see a TikTok hit as weird as this continue to have staying power and while it still isn't my thing, I'm not gonna complain about it too much. Rounding out the Top 5 are St. Chroma and Sticky which fell from the Top 2 to #4 and #5 as they noticeably dropped 27.61% and 22.62% respectively.
This week was the first true cooloff week for CHROMAKOPIA as Noid crashed by 41.16%, Thought I Was Dead dropped 31.37%, Rahh Tah Tah had a similar fall of 31.92%, Like Him has a decent hold of 24.74%, and Darling I falls out of the Top 10 with a 31.26% drop. Overall, the album dropped 50.22$ which considering its been out for more than 2 complete weeks is still an impressive hold. Literally all the debuts from last week didn't stay so the only other decline worth reporting is that Disease continues to crumble as it took a 20.36% decline this week, really no chance of it recovering without a TikTok viral boost.
The biggest news as I said were Christmas songs seeing big gains or re-entries as people prepare themmselves for the holidays. I would not be surprised if we see one or two of them in the Top 10 next week. We also saw two Zach Bryan songs debut on the charts and several of his previous hits gain. Regardless of some nasty allegations that came out recently, there is still a fanbase for his music. The only other big debuts were two Latin music mega collabs, one in reggaeton and the other in Regional Mexican Music.
Notable Gains: Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree - 36.63% Jingle Bell Rock - 32.55% Last Christmas - 25.01% on one tonight - 24.87% NEL - 20.92% Break from Toronto - 19.87% That's So True - 18.39% I Never Lie - 15.34% All I Want for Christmas is You - 14.81% That's What I Like - 14.55% No Pole - 14.33% White Ferrari - 12.01% Wondering Why - 11.58% No One Noticed - 11.42% we can't be friends (wait for your love) - 11.03% Risk - 10.95% From the Start - 10.82% Feel Good Inc. - 10.71% Iris - 10.45% My Love Mine - 10.41% Ivy - 10.37% Beautiful Crazy - 10.06% Last Night - 10.05% Sailor Song - 9.61% Heading South - 9.53%

Plus, Gracie Abrams achieves her first top 10 with "That's So True."
Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” adds an 18th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the chart’s 66-year history, the song is now one week away from potentially tying for the longest reign, held by Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus), which dominated for 19 weeks in 2019.
“A Bar Song (Tipsy)” became Shaboozey’s first Hot 100 leader in July.
The party anthem additionally extends the longest rule this year, 22 weeks, on the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart. It’s one of only seven hits to reach the milestone since the survey became the genre’s all-encompassing songs chart in 1958.
Meanwhile, Gracie Abrams makes her first appearance in the Hot 100’s top 10, as “That’s So True” blasts from No. 13 to No. 6. It also becomes the first No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart for the singer-songwriter, who’s currently the sole opening act on Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour.
The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated Nov. 23, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, Nov. 19). For all chart news, you can follow billboard and billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram. Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published. ‘Tipsy’ Airplay, Streams & Sales “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” on American Dogwood/EMPIRE (with country radio promotion by Magnolia Music), totaled 69.2 million radio airplay audience impressions (down 2% week-over-week), 19.9 million official streams (down 6%) and 6,000 sold (up 16%) in the United States Nov. 8-14. The track holds for a 16th week at No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart; rises 3-2 after 14 weeks atop Digital Song Sales; and keeps at No. 5 following nine weeks ruling Streaming Songs. Hits With the Most Weeks at No. 1 All-Time Below is a recap of the five longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1s, of 1,175 total leaders dating to the chart’s Aug. 4, 1958, start. (All five have led since the list adopted electronically-monitored Luminate data in November 1991, at which point longer commands than before subsequently became more common.) 19 weeks, “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, 2019 18 (to date), “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Shaboozey, 2024 16, “Last Night,” Morgan Wallen, 2023 16, “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber, 2017 16, “One Sweet Day,” Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1995-96 ‘True’ Story: Abrams Earns First Top 10
Gracie Abrams’ “That’s So True” soars 13-6 on the Hot 100 with 23.5 million streams (up 25%), 1.9 million in airplay audience (up 453%) and 3,000 sold (up 20%) Nov. 8-14.
The singer-songwriter scores her first Hot 100 top 10 with the song from the deluxe edition, released Oct. 18, of her album The Secret of Us. The track debuted at No. 44 on the Nov. 2-dated chart and then rose to Nos. 25 and 13. She has notched two prior top 40 hits: “Us.,” featuring Taylor Swift (No. 36 peak, July), and “I Love You, I’m Sorry” (No. 19, October).
Notably, as airplay builds for “That’s So True,” Abrams appears on Billboard airplay charts with two other songs, both on the original and deluxe editions of The Secret of Us: “Close to You” ranks at No. 23 on Pop Airplay (after hitting No. 21) and “I Love You, I’m Sorry” places at No. 40 on Adult Pop Airplay (after reaching No. 36).
“That’s So True” concurrently surges 7-1 to become Abrams’ first leader on Streaming Songs.
Abrams has opened on over three dozen dates of Swift’s The Eras Tour, serving as the sole opener for all shows since Oct. 18; she is also set to be the only supporting act for the remaining dates of the groundbreaking tour through Dec. 8. Abrams & Other Eras Tour Opening Acts With Hot 100 Top 10s
Meanwhile, Abrams is the latest artist to reap chart benefits from exposure of a coveted opening spot on Swift’s The Eras Tour. She becomes the third such act during the tour, which launched in March 2023, to have hit the Hot 100’s top 10, following Sabrina Carpenter and Benson Boone.
Here’s a recap of every opening act on The Eras Tour that has hit the Hot 100’s top 10 since the tour began; all have done so this year, and after not previously reaching the top 10:
Gracie Abrams, “That’s So True” (No. 6 to date, November) Sabrina Carpenter, “Espresso” (No. 3, June), “Please Please Please” (No. 1, one week, June), “Taste” (No. 2, September) Benson Boone, “Beautiful Things” (No. 2, March)
Swift has added 19 Hot 100 top 10s since The Eras Tour started, upping her career count to 59, the most among women in the list’s history.
Rest of the Top 10: ‘Die With a Smile’ & More
Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With a Smile” holds for a third week at its No. 2 Hot 100 high. As previously reported, it ascends to No. 1 on the Pop Airplay chart. It also jumps 8-5 on Radio Songs (51.3 million in audience, up 4%), where, notably, Gaga ranks in the top five for the first time since “The Edge of Glory” hit No. 4 in 2011.
Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather” keeps at No. 3 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2. It tops the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts for a 15th week each.
Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” is steady at No. 4 on the Hot 100, after hitting No. 3, while her “Taste” slips 7-8, after it debuted at its No. 2 high.
Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” which led the Hot 100 for a week in March, repeats at No. 5. The song ties The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber’s 2021 hit “Stay” for the second-most weeks (44) logged in the top 10 all-time; they trail only the run of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” (57 weeks, 2020-21).
Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen, descends 6-7 on the Hot 100, following six weeks at No. 1 beginning upon its debut in May.
Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Benson Boone’s No. 2-peaking “Beautiful Things” dips 8-9 and Wallen’s “Love Somebody” falls 9-10, three weeks after it debuted as his third No. 1.
