Guess it's time to start a thread for the new week. This week is pretty siginficant as it's the first week of the R&R 2004 chart year.
Good to start a new chart year with a new #1---OutKast's "Hey Ya" has just reached the top spot and in addition, "The Way You Move" has entered the Top 40. With none of the songs in the Top 40 likely to reach #1 (at least in my opinion), OutKast is sure to stay at the top for a while.

I hope this is the week MB20, and Michelle Branch lose their bullets.

I really don't know what you have against artists with names that start with 'M.' ;)
I wonder who the next #1 will be. Maybe Baby Bash as much as I can't picture that happening! I also can't Stacie Orrico going there, but it also may be No Doubt followed by Clay Aiken.

Here's something semi-interesting about "Hey Ya."
If "Hey Ya" makes it to #1 on the BBHot 100, it'll be the second #1 there to name check Lucy Liu. The last Hot 100 song to mention Lucy Liu was Destiny's Child's "Independent Women Part 1." Ironically, "Hey Ya" also name checks THAT song's lead singer, Beyonce. And on top of that, Outkast's "Ms. Jackson" is what knocked DC3 out of #1 if I'm not mistaken.
At CHR/Pop, "Hey Ya" is also the second #1 to name check Lucy Liu.
And doesn't Lucy Liu seem kind of random? I mean she's hot and all, but random for the Outkast song.

Ugh, on this morning's update, MATM now fell BELOW Get Low! >:( >:( >:( Get Low needs to exit stage left FAST! I am so sick of that song, and it in no way deserved a top 10 spot on pop radio (or any format for that matter...)
Christina is down to ~+350! :o This is not good news for top 10 hopefuls...

Christina's spins have been actually picking up steam in the last couple days, so don't get your hopes up on her not going top 10 yet

I don't know what gave you that impression, but compared to other stuff on the chart, this is a very nice song to include in pop rotation IMO. Please don't become all defensive about this...

Chances for Michelle are getting slim (only +67!) >:( Thanks to Chingy, Clay Aiken, and Christina, she might peak at #21 when she's been to #20.
If one of these wasn't to make to the Top 5, which one would it be? Nickelback, No Doubt, or Simple Plan?
Baby Boy and Stacy's Mom on the downfall! :o
Looks like Outkast enters Top 30 when "Hey Ya" reaches #1.
There's a great chance Liz Phair could jump all the way to #11 or #12 this week. She is +390 and only about 450 spins away from the #11 song (Maroon5) that is -491. Now that's a thought!

Hopefully Michelle can pick up again, her gains overall have been pretty eratic. But I think this is sadly the end of this song.
Good luck for Liz Phair, the song is fit for pop! Just took a while for pop stations realize that!

What artists (if any) had their first song to chart be a Top 10 released as long after the start of their career as Liz Phair has if she makes the Top 10? The Red Hot Chili Peppers made their career debut on 4/10/1992, was that a longer time from the start of their career as Liz Phair? Jimmy Eat World didn't break through with their first album, but I don't know if they started ten years before "The Middle." Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin were around in Spanish before their first CHR-Pop hit, but I don't know about ten years before. When did Incubus form? When did the Goo Goo Dolls form?

Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin were around in Spanish before their first CHR-Pop hit, but I don't know about ten years before. When did Incubus form? When did the Goo Goo Dolls form? The all-time record has to be the Grateful Dead, who formed in 1965, had their first charting album in 1967, and had their only top 40 and top 10 hit in 1987 with "Touch Of Grey". That makes the time they've waited for a hit twice as long as Liz Phair has. As for the other acts you mentioned: Red Hot Chili Peppers (formed 1983, first album 1984) Jimmy Eat World (formed 1994, first album 1996) Enrique Iglesias (first album 1995) Ricky Martin (first album 1991, However he joined Menudo in 1984) Incubus (formed 1991, first album 1995) Goo Goo Dolls (formed 1985, first album 1987) So they've all had a bit of a wait, but none matches Liz Phair's 11 years, unless you count Ricky Martin's career going back to his Menudo days.

What about Shawn Colvin. I seem to remember her having several albums out before "A Few Small Repairs" hit it big.

Shawn Colvin sang backup on Suzanne Vega's "Luka" in 1987, and "Sunny Came Home" hit it big in 1997. So about 10 years.

Incubus (formed 1991, first album 1995) Um...4 weeks at #11 for "Drive" doesn't qualify as a Top 10 hit...what Top 10 did they have before that?

Outkast isn't #1! I'm kinda surprised! I'd love to hear AT40 when Casey announces 3 Doors Down's return to #1! LOL! As for Outkast, well, next week is inevitable! It's amazing that the song is most added while 'The Way You Move' is making huge leaps and bounds! Could they replace themselves at #1?

Let's just hope that "Hey Ya" has a short and uneventful stay at the top. It is such a horrible song. I can't wait for "The Way You Move" to take spins away from it.

I like "Hey Ya," but I agree with you, we're probably in the minority when we say that "The Way You Move," is the better Outkast song. I like the latter better, it's more groovy and catchier in my opinion.

That's a good observation. A couple years ago when AT40/AT20 was doing their trivia quizes, Casey mentioned that (Bob) Dylan was mentioned in the lyrics of 3 number 1 songs: "Right Here, Right Now," "Mr. Jones" and "Only Wanna Be With You." Now if "We Didn't Start the Fire" had hit #1, it would've been 4.

I like "The Way You Move" better now. To be honest, I was a bit biast when it first came out when I only paid attention to the boring chorus. The verse is really catchy though! "Hey Ya" is totally burned out on me and now the way he says things in the song make him sound like he's trying to be funny. Also, the "Shake it like Polaroid picture" line just seems like a forced attempt to be the idiosyncraic Outkast they are!

TWO of the top 5 gainers are Outkast songs. :o
