I'm surprised there's no thread for this, or at least not one that our beloved search engine can recognize.
Confirming rumors that began a few weeks ago, Shirley Manson confirmed on Carson Daly last week that Butch Vig will be producing the next Green Day album.

Yeah, the wait has been very annoying. But WOW @ the producer of Nevermind, probably the most noteable album of the last 20 (at least) years working on this! I'm hoping this can live up to the hype built by American Idiot.

Billboard.com:
Green Day In The Studio With Butch Vig
October 14, 2008
by Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Confirming news that Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson let slip recently on "The Carson Daly Show," Green Day is in the studio with veteran producer Butch Vig working on the follow-up to 2004's "American Idiot."
In a video posted over the weekend on YouTube, the band is seen in the control room as the camera pans over to Vig, who smiles and extends his middle finger. Instrumental bits of two new songs are heard in the background.
Vig is best known for his work on Nirvana's "Nevermind" but has also logged time behind the boards with Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth, in addition to his musician role in Garbage. Of late, he has produced albums from Jimmy Eat World, Against Me! and Tad.
Green Day worked with producer Rob Cavallo on "American Idiot," a runaway smash that has sold 5.8 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The group reappeared this spring masquerading as the band Foxboro Hot Tubs, releasing an album and playing a handful of small club shows. The upcoming Green Day album, as-yet-untitled, is expected next year via Warner Bros.

Green Day speak about new 'powerpop' album
Courtesy Of Nme.com – Tue Dec 2, 10:00 am ET
Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong has hinted that their forthcoming new Butch Vig-produced album could take a "powerpop" direction.
The frontman did not reveal song titles or details of the songs they are currently working on in the studio, but name-checked the Creation, the Who, the Beatles, Cheap Trick, and the Jam as possible influences.
"I really like f--king with arrangements," Armstrong told Altpress.com. "I always try to look at the possibilities of how you write powerpop music.
"How do you take something--and it could be anything from the Creation and the Who to the Beatles to Cheap Trick to the Jam--and try to expand on the idea of what is supposed to be three-chord mayhem?
"How do you do it in a way where the arrangements are just unpredictable? So I'm pushing myself to be progressive in songwriting and being a songwriter."
The frontman went on to discuss working with Vig, who produced Nirvana's seminal grunge album Nevermind in 1991. "He doesn't take for granted what we have here [in the studio]," he said, "but he uses everything to the best of his knowledge and the best of his ability.
"I mean, he gets psyched on a f--king microphone! That's inspiring. That's amazing. He's not a cheerleader type of producer; he's just a very hard-working, straightforward guy.
"He's very Midwestern, too. For example, he'll turn around when you're working on something and just go, 'That's badass.' And you're like, 'What do you mean, 'badass?' Is that more bad, or is it, like, ass?'"
Green Day posted video footage of them working in the studio with Butch Vig in October.

Green Day
TBA (Warner Bros., spring)
The punk trio's 2004 album "American Idiot" was one of the biggest left-field smashes of the past decade, selling more than 5.8 million U.S. copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. But before getting down to business on the follow-up, the band members masqueraded as garage rockers Foxboro Hot Tubs and played small clubs to get the rust off. It quickly shifted into high-concept mode, dividing new songs into three tentatively titled acts: "Heroes and Cons," "Charlatans and Saints" and "Horseshoes and Handgrenades." According to Alternative Press, characters like Gloria and Christian appear throughout the narrative, while songs like the Clash-ish "Know Your Enemy," the ballad "Last Night on Earth" and the bristling "Before the Lobotomy" should not only satiate old fans but usher in new ones.

The album is called 21st Century Breakdown and it is due out in May. According to the Wall Street Journal, the album will be out over the spring. Song titles include "Heroes and Cons," "Charlatans and Saints" and "Horseshoes and Hand Grenades". Those are actually the names of the three 'acts' the album is split into. This all sounds massively pretentious. Can't wait!

fmqb.com/article.asp?id=1161386Green Day Get Epic On Breakdown February 12, 2009 More and more information keeps coming out about Green Day's long awaited new album, 21st Century Breakdown. Rolling Stone confirms that the band will head out on a major world tour, starting with playing indoor arenas this July. As expected, 21st Century Breakdown is conceptually broken down into three acts: "Heroes and Cons," "Charlatans and Saints" and "Horseshoes and Handgrenades," with 16 songs in total on the album. Bassist Mike Dirnt told Alternative Press that the songs "speak to each other the way the songs on [Bruce Springsteen’s] Born To Run speak to each other. I don’t know if you’d call it a ‘concept album,’ but there’s a thread that connects everything." Rolling Stone and MTV News have both heard six of the new tracks and previewed the new material. The title track "morphs into multiple movements like some of the more rock-opera-heavy numbers on American Idiot," according to Rolling Stone. MTV also confirmed that the snippet of music currently heard on GreenDay.com is from the title song. "Know Your Enemy" is described as a straight-ahead rock song. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sings in "an uncharacteristically sweet singing voice into voyages into his limber upper register" on "Before The Lobotomy" and "Restless Heart Syndrome." The political "March Of The Dogs" is described as the most punk rock of the six songs, while "21 Guns" is compared to the mid-tempo hit, "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams."
