So it seems to me the market is very limited, and songs typically make their way up the Top 40 charts slowly. Right now, of the top 20 songs on the Mediabase Top 40 chart, ONLY FOUR WERE RELEASED IN 2007. This is already mid-May, right in the middle of the second quarter of 2007, and only four songs released this year are in the top 20. Four of the top 20 were released in 2005, two years ago.
Songs released last year are currently #1, #2, #3 and #4.
I think that's a bit misleading in that some songs weren't truly pushed until this year, though. And was "Give It To Me" really released last year? Even if it was, it would have been right at the end. There are plenty of songs pushed in 2007 in the top 20 - "Makes Me Wonder," "Home," "Summer Love," "Because Of You," "Umbrella," "Girlfriend," etc.
"'Vision Of Love', when I first heard that song, I knew it, my mind was made up, I had to be a singer." - Beyonce "When I discovered Mariah Carey and 'Vision of Love,' that was a breath of fresh air. And I adored her from that moment on and idolized her." - Christina Aguilera "I think ['Vision Of Love'] was a vision of the future world of American Idol." - Rich Juzwiak, Slant
all of the bullets are down - Kelly, Avril, Justin, Daughtry, Maroon 5, Pink, etc.
The number of spins per day is steady... but it's stopped GAINING spins, which doesn't make sense if the callout info is positive like we've heard it is.

*prays that the second single is more radio friendly* LOL!
I love Kelly, but I kinda thought this wasn't gonna go over well with the general public. I HOPED it would, because some of the people I know from work (they aren't my friends) talk about how fat she is now and she should have lost weight before she came back. I HATE shallow people, lol. Who cares what they think though... I know SUBG would have been a hit even if she was the weight she is now! I just hope her next single is more radio friendly so these dumb haters eat their words, lol.
But then again, she may not care if the album flops..... more power to her! One of my favorite Madonna albums is American Life, and we all know what a flop that was for Madonna standards, lol! Yet it gave the fans something to love over a CAREER, which I know Kelly will have. She isn't a flash in the pan (just like Madonna).
Furthermore, I have full faith this song will reach Top 5.... even if RCA has to payola every station in the country... lol.
Surely the video will help the song too... the video is either her best, or second best video in my opinion. I've heard lots of people say the same thing!

at this rate, NA would be bulletless in a few days ... well it's about to get very interesting ... TV promo is starting tomorrow although i doubt that will help much with radio.
RCA might want this to slow down though. they are concentrating on avril GF to hit #1, daughtry's home after that, then they can push kelly.
if not, they better be ready with a hot second single b4 the album drops!
Top 10: 1. OVER YOU -DAUGHTRY 2. hold it dont drop it -jLO 3. big girls dont cry - fergie 4. umbrella (rock remix) - rihanna 5. stronger -kanye west 6. i got it from my mama -william 7. the way i are -timbaland 8. beautiful girls -jojo 9. whatever u like -nicole 10. wake up call - maroon 5

I guess if this song doesn't go *too* much higher than it's living proof that even if a singer is the hottest thing in radio with a first single from a new album, that still doesn't guarantee a huge hit. I know before the song came out, I was saying there's no way Kelly could miss the Top 10 and that #1 was, for the most part, a pretty sure bet, considering she was pretty much the top artist at radio for the last 2 years. But there's no such things as sure bets when it comes to charts, even when it looks like it is. I guess this teaches us that even when an artist is making a huge comeback or coming off of five major Top 10 hits, it isn't the artist but is the song that truly determines whether it'll be a hit (and, to an extent, the label).
Kudos to 'Never Again' for hopefully teaching us a valuable lesson, or at least proving it. (assuming it doesn't go much higher)

beyonce had proved it with deja Vu. although in that case deja vu was my fave song last year. but if general people arent feeling the song, top 40 probably aint gonna play it and it will ruin the momentum for the album. pop didnt even touch ring the alarm. they didnt warm up to beyonce until she release a pop friendly irreplaceable.
pink proved it b4 .. lots of artist with huge album and come back with more rocker/serious/edgier stuff. they all have flopped big time.
NA daily spins have been on the 450-550 range this week, it stopped gaining.
if kelly had come back with a catchy radio friendly single, it would have been huge with still 1000+ bullets just outside the top 10. but good for kelly for fighting for her artistic growth, rather than just keep doing the same bubble gum pop ear candy #1 smash all the time.

^ deja vu was poor... ring the alarm was even worse.
It surprises me that this song is doing better on hot AC than pop! I figured this song would be too "rock" for HAC and they'd be shy to play it, but the song is still #3 on the jump chart with the second largest bullet in the top 20. Figure that one out.

this song is too rock? lol

Personally speaking, I think the song is great and it has been growing on me more and more (and I wouldn't even consider myself to be a "fan"), but I predicted that this would be the way things would turn out from the first listen. It's too polarizing for a lead single imo and I always believed that it would perform similarly to Deja Vu and Wind It Up (Both of which I love).
Anyways, sad to see that this song isn't getting more success, but kudos to Kelly for sticking by her guns and doing what she wants.

Something fishy's going on. JT, M5, Avril, Diddy, Rihanna all plummeted almost the exact same amount as Kelly - so its just not Kelly here, it just looks really bad since Kelly was stabaling out. They all dropped by nearly 200 or more. Was this a delayed reaction to the audience drop?
Something foul is going on in radio right now, and I don't like it.
Well if I come back from vacation and see this bulletless all I can say is I'm really confused. Alot of what EyeMax says does make sense and was my #1 concern with such a great run Kelly has had that everyone was gonna assume instant success (even radio pushing it to the highest debut this year). I still give Kelly all the props in the world for not following the formula and releasing not what current trend think is 'hot' but what was REAL. Never Again is as real as you can get, as new and edgy as you can get, as risky for pop radio as you can get, kudos to you Kelly.
I still think somethings odd, the top 50 numbers ..somethings weird, it doesn't match current trend. I still think this will see a second life.
As for 'radio friendly' comments, well here's your most damn radio friendly song and even look at it (not to mention your new record breaking hot 100 reigner):
8 8 MAROON 5 Makes Me Wonder 5427 5232 195 30.292
So I don't buy the whole 'cuz its not radio friendly' gig as much as I used to.
For now see everyone in a week! Maybe when I'm in Texas I can send out good vibes being in the homestate of Clarkson heh.

I think Kelly should've considered her record labels opposition at least a little bit.

I havent really been on the net often lately so Im not up to date with the most recent stuff. If she did go with a single that RCA supports, good. I see having radio hits as a way to continue an artistic vision so I am all for working with the label.
I see having radio hits as a way to continue an artistic vision
tell that to Patty Griffin & Ray Lamontage (sp?).
The thing is A LOT of great artists NEVER get heard on radio.... I guess I just don't equate a great song with getting played on radio. With some of the utter crap I hear everyday on radio I'm less inclined to believe that it's based on quality and/or content. It's based on what's the hot trend right now.... NA is clearly different than ANYTHING on pop radio right now so it's going to have a harder time getting played...not when there is so much fluff to choose from.
Would I love to see NA go to #1? yes but not just so Kelly can have another #1 hit BUT rather as a way of putting egg on the faces of those at RCA who doubted Kelly and make those who said this song wouldn't get to #1 have to eat crow. However if it doesn't make it to #1 or even top 10 it won't diminish how much I enjoy listening to this song in my car with the windows rolled down scream singing it!

I agree. Radio doesn't go with quality. If it did the charts would look A LOT different! However, quality is like an opinion and it differs. Some think this song is amazing, some think its pure crap! But I do agree radio does go by what the trend is and who the producer is and what not. This should be on the callout scores coming out tomorrow right?? Or was it already on the callouts?? lol

Where did I say that I think only good songs are played on the radio? **confused** I said that i think having radio hits helps an artist maintain an artistic vision. I stand by that. If Kelly flops her ass off with this cd you can BET she will lose all power with her next cd. All control. Along with possibly losing some of the privileges she has (access to the best musicians, studios, producers) Especially with an artist like Kelly, having 1-2 radio friendly songs that her producers will support will do more for her artistic vision than stubbornly not compromising at all. Sometimes slight compromises help better than my way or no way.

i agree with love. while NA is definitely a great song, IMO, it is too much of a "switch" from the 'old kelly'. kelly is coming off an extremely successful album, and i think it would have been much much wiser of her to release a song that sounded a bit like one from breakaway, but obviously one with more nuances that show growth and change. then, once she hooked everyone in again, she should have released NA just to blow listeners away with how much she has grown...i think the effects (affects?) of the song would have been MUCH more positive of her, for she would be reeling in new fans while keeping her old ones.
i fear, and i pray im wrong, that kelly has grown a bit....pretentious in thinking that everything she touches will turn to gold. NA just might be the mistake, however slight, that shatters that illusion...i hope im wrong, cuz i think the song is too good for radio to pass up!

I agree with LPL and Carriefan too. I don't think Kelly will lose ALL of her power on the next CD if this one flops. I just think she won't have as much. I am sure they will let her write her own songs and help produce them and let her choose her own producers and stuff. But I think they will restrict her to certain producers possibly.

I really don't see how NA is that much different. Yes, it has a different sound but it completely sounds like Kelly and it's not completely hard rock or anything. Guess nobody sees it the same.
Honestly, Kelly doesn't care if whatever she touches turns to gold or not...she's said that a lot recently. She just wants to put out the music she's feeling at the time. I think that's fairly honorable, and not pretentious at all. ???
OK... Do you guys really think NA is THAT different from Breakway?? It has the same structure as Addicted, the rock sound is still there... I just think you guys are trying excuses for if she flops. The song is just no good enough IMO, and not catchy like her old singles. If she flops, she can always rebound, like Beyonce did. Shes's still a big star.
Beyonce got very lucky though. That usually doesn't happen.
