As to the press, there was a definite backlash in the press at the beginning of this era. First for her weight/looks, then for the album fight with Clive. I stopped listening to the radio for a while because that's all people seemed to be able to talk about. But it seemed to have to done a 180 for now. More people seem to be on Kelly's side, now this may change if people don't like the album, but for now, with a few exceptions the press seems to be backing Kelly. For example, her appearance on Idol had a lot of positive reviews. There were a few negative ones (primarily about her weight, some about the song/vocals) but for every negative review there were like 50 positive ones.

I agree completely. "Try This" is better than "M!ssundaztood" once people actually take away the commercial success of the latter. Kelly needs to grow up and move on to. She is best accepting that its best to have less success with an album that will lead her to greater things, than an album that will leave her in the same place.

I've got to give due credit to Kelly Clarkson. As champion of the first season of "American Idol," she is the people's pop artist. Clarkson made good career choices and, aside from her endorsement of NASCAR, I can respect her as a musician.

Earlier this month in an interview with MTV News International, Clarkson admitted that web rumors that she and mogul Clive Davis are going rounds about her new album, "My December," may be rooted in truth. The mighty KC claims that her label, RCA, sent her a track that Lindsay Lohan put on her last album but failed to make successful and wanted Clarkson to re-record it.

Say what?

That's like taking a clothing line that failed to sell at The GAP and putting it in the front window of Banana Republic the following season with a trumped up price tag -- same tripe, different salesman. You can't trick people into buying a product that has the social impact of halitosis just because you've recycled it to a better ad campaign.
Because she is the portrait of southern hospitality, Clarkson's public reaction was offended but gracious. "Obviously they're a record label so they need to sell records. They want the formula writers and the formula producers that do everybody else's stuff. ... I just don't like working with someone that gives you a song and is like, 'Oh, I wrote this for you.' But you find out that they've given it to every other artist and they turned it down, you know?," she told MTV.

She also refused to insult Lindsay Lohan by reveling in the fact that RCA has more confidence in her ability to sell music.

"My December" will drop in late June and much like the Linkin Park track of the same name, it's supposedly a bit of a downer. But the album's sobriety is intentional. Besides, after releasing two multi-platinum albums of catchy bubblegum and sunshiny puppy love songs, a girl is entitled to a mood swing or two.

So I say, 'Good on ya,' Kelly. It's about time someone put a conscience back into this industry. Times are ugly when record company exec's look at artists as paychecks but it's revolting when artists view themselves that way.

Rhetorically speaking, how stupid do they think we are? I'd be willing to bet that there are more than a handful of Kelly Clarkson fans that spill over into the Lindsay Lohan market. And even if, in total, they have a median age of 12, they should be insulted at the idea of being written off as ignorant consumers who will throw their money at the brightest neon font in the record store.

Shame on Clive Davis. I'm so deleting him from my top 8.

Clive's Speech Ain't Music To Kelly's Ears

After Clive Davis' very public display of rejection toward pop superstar Kelly Clarkson (via a speech that canonized Saint Carrie Underwood) on last night's "American Idol" finale, sources tell TMZ that SONY/BMG execs were apologizing to members of Clarkson's camp for their label head's rude behavior.

The 75-year-old owlish music mogul was tasked with speaking to the huge TV audience about the health of the "A.I" franchise and appeared to go out of his way to avoid mentioning Kelly's new single "Never Again" (which reached the Top 10 for heaven's sake!) or her forthcoming CD, "My December." Yet he somehow managed to find time to plug both Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee's new singles! Clive did briefly allude to two-time Grammy winner Clarkson -- but only to praise the talents of outside songwriters working with "Idols." Ouch!

Sources backstage at the finale report that Sony/BMG execs attempted to apologize to Kelly's team -- but their backtracking on behalf of the man with the golden ears fell on deaf ears. A well-placed source told TMZ, "Clive's actions, both delaying the album, and now this, tell you everything you need to know about how he feels about Kelly." That's no way to treat a 15-million-album-selling lady!

As TMZ reported, the contentious feud erupted between honcho Davis and Kelly after she refused to make the "significant changes" to her new album (for which she wrote or co-wrote every song) -- that Clive demanded.

Artistic integrity - 1, The Man - 0!

A rep for Clive Davis told TMZ, "There is no truth to this story whatsoever. The focus of Clive's speech was on the recent Idol successes."

This song is pretty much done, even if it's not falling as fast as some others (with a -1000). It won't see a resurge.

it's just interesting to me that EVERY current song performed on Idol this year saw a boost in radio play immediately following said performance and NA didn't. it's interesting to analyze how a song can manage to do the exact opposite of what ALL indicators would point towards it doing.

That is why I hated the Hot 100 some years ago when it was almost purely based on Airplay, with small weight of sales. You could see the sort-of 'manipulation' that radio did to some artists by not playing them, despite they were popular or their singles sold hugely.
Bad to see this against Kelly. I mean. I seriously thought NA could be in the top20 or stay around for awhile, NEVER PLUMMET in a month time!! This is about to tie Candyman as the airplay flop of the first halfyear :'(

I would say that RCA is influencing the trajectory of NA. All their promoters have to do is tell the programmers they don't care what they do with the song. It doesn't have to be about lack of payola, it could just be lack of enthusiasm or support that sends the message that RCA doesn't back the song. Clive wants to prove he has more power than Kelly. But she can still have huge sales, and maybe they will be better about the second single.

I can see this going the route of Avril's singles from her second album. Don't Tell Me was kind of a starter single, which didn't do amazingly. After the album released, My Happy Ending was released as single number two and it exploded.

I was thinking that last night about this album being for Kelly what Avril's second album was. I think Kelly's second single might hit #2 or something like that and her album will do well even if the first single hasn't.

Regarding the radio thing, if the label says that radio can do what they want with the song, I don't think radio will stop playing it. If radio wants to play the song without label support, they'll play it. The song is dropping because radio doesn't want to play it. Some of you guys put too much faith in how much of an effect a label has on radio airplay. Remember, payola is illegal and probably doesn't happen as often as you'd like to believe.

Its not new news that RCA didn't support the song, infact the quite opposite. Now that factor wouldn't 100% have to do with its decline but its a pretty large factor if your label is supporting/pushing other artists like Avril, Daughtry ect and letting this one do whatever its gonna do on its own. Especially if you have the CEO of the label not even liking it.

I'm not making excuses, I'm just saying look at the facts: FACT - this song is growing internationally and doing well in other countries, FACT this song is doing great on digital sales FACT the song still has a minor bullet and close to top 10 on Hot AC. FACT - the ONLY thing where this has underpreformed is on Pop radio. FACT, Pop radio has had better call outs for the song than Hot AC, consistantly.

Doesn't that seem a little fishy to anyone? And if its just NA being a bad single choice don't you think the label would already push for another radio friendly single now?

I said something was fishy with the numbers a couple weeks back. Either we were gonna see a great comeback soon or a surprising crash. Well now we are seeing a surprising crash so now I knew where my suspesions lead.

Lets see where this song goes next week, if it has no longevity than its obvious the label wants another more radio friendly single out before her CD drops, and Kelly & her management would have to react. Like eyeMax and a few others were saying maybe they used NA as the heater track and waiting to release the 'smash' hit. When's the last time an anticipated female artist released their smash hit on the first single btw? I think Nelly and that's it for a few years back (and maybe that's why she's having problems with airplay now, she's old news already since releasing her smash a year ago).

Shame they had no faith in NA.

If that Velvet Rope memo, which is buried back somewhere in the album thread, was correct, Kelly will be promoting the album in Europe for 2 weeks sometime before June 26.
