Would "IKYW" appeal to the country audience? Oddly, it's probably too pop for country, while "ITYS" is probably too country for country radio. Of course, I think either would at least make the top 10 at country; I just don't see either hitting #1.

Jewel commented in her blog:
People's Choice Awards Recap Posted in From Jewel on January 7, 2009 Hi! So the awards were fun! I'm in the car headed back to the hotel, and then I'm gonna go eat with Jason "Turtle" Freese and his wife, Amy. Jason is who married Ty and I in the Bahamas. He was in my band during the 0304 tour and he is also producing my new lullaby album with me! I worked up quite an appetite at the awards. Visiting with all the fans and helping Diana with her CVS makeover was a blast! She was already beautiful to begin with, but she looked so amazing in that gorgeous dress.
Well, I'm off to dinner- Hope you guys enjoyed the show. Man, while I'm thinking of it, Carrie Underwood sang her ASS off!!! Great job by the songwriters Neil Thrasher, Wendell Mobley and Steve McEwan; and GREAT singing by Carrie- I was very impressed. Have a great night!

The performance of IKYW was flawless. My whole family enjoyed it & they were just casual fans before.
I haven't been paying much attention to Carrie as of late, so I just stumbled on this, but I'm SO HAPPY that ITYS is the new single. It's my second favorite off the album, while FOTF is my favorite. But I am curious as to why she performed IKYW rather than her new single?

countrycentral.wordpress.com/2009/01/08/single-review-i-told-you-so-by-carrie-underwood/Single Review: “I Told You So” by Carrie Underwood
Written and originally performed by the great Randy Travis, “I Told You So” hit #1 for the first time in that same year and became a land mark hit for Travis in his career. Twenty-one years later it looks like this powerful and mesmerizing ballad is going to do it again in the very capable hands of Carrie Underwood, who Travis conveniently invited to the Opry last year.
What can I say about this song? Wait…what can’t I say about this song. It keeps intact the perfection of Randy’s original version, adjusts flawlessly and almost un-noticeably to Carrie’s own voice, contains intense and powerful emotional significance and presentation without going overboard, and stands out over anything that has been offered to radio in the past few years. What Travis was able to do with this song Carrie was able to capitalize on and bring this powerful ballad to a whole new level.
There is just so much glory behind this song. Not only is Carrie able to prove once and for all that she undoubtably belongs in the country music world, at least to those still too stubborn to accept her, but she is also able to bring her take on such a delicate and heavily treasured country classic and pull it off with grace and style without destroying what was so great about it in the first place. In summary, perfect song, perfect voice, perfect cover, written by one of the best and reborn through one of today’s best.
Grade: A+

^ wow-- now THAT is the kind of review we need right now. If the song gets good reviews, it will generate some good buzz, and radio will play it.
Hang in there guys. I know some of you wanted other songs then this single (me too in the beginning), but I think ITYS is going to do much better then some of you might expect.
Country radio might actually be excited to play something "country" for once. lol

"'The girl was flat-out born to sing country songs and only an idiot wouldn’t agree. Hopefully the success of this single at radio (where it should have a great chance at getting to #1 just like all of her other singles) will have Underwood pushing for a few more traditional-leaning tracks on the next record, or at least songs with more fiddle solos and fills and less bombastic production and vocal stretching, something we all agree will make Underwood an even bigger star.'"
Love this quote from the Roughstock.com review!!!
The Country Central review is amazing as well!
I must see her People's Choice performance that everyone is raving about! Is it on youtube yet?

I loved how Robin Williams, Hugh Laurie from House, and even Chandra something from Grey's Anatomy were saying "wow" when they briefly showed the audience after her performance of IKYW. That was amazing.
I cannot wait for ITYS to hit radio. It is taking way too long! lol
Well. Carrie is off for a few weeks now per her blog, and will start writing for hte new album end of January. So I think we are safe to assume they will not be filming the video for awhile, if there is a video for ITYS.
Grammys are the first week of February, so Carrie may be busy with that as well, depending on whether she performs/presents etc. There is Clive Davis' party, etc.
So I wonder when we can look for a video for ITYS?

I just found this out, and I'm so disappointed. How can they ignore stuff like FOTF, CD, IKYW, YWFT, GOOTT, or TMBIM for a cover? Basically Twisted is the only song left on the album I would rather see this released over.

i'm surprised to see quite a number say other songs should have been released instead because ITYS is a cover, and the original is more than 20 years old. heck, Rascal Flatts 2 career defining singles are both covers.

But their not covers in the same sense that this song is. I guess BTBR was, but I don't think many people (myself included) remembered the original. WHTM wasn't really a cover, it was just a song that had been previously recorded. This song is a cover in the true sense of the word - a remake of a classic hit single.

I agree that few, if any, really know that those Rascal Flatts songs were previously recorded.
Many big stars have turned a cover of a huge/classic song into a hit of their own, introducing it to either a new generation or a new genre.
Examples: LeAnn Rimes - Unchained Melody Faith Hill - Piece of my Heart Mark Wills - Back At One Mark Chesnutt - I Don't Want To Miss A Thing Alan Jackson - Who's Cheatin' Who Alan Jackson - It Must Be Love
and the list goes on....
I believe Carrie and her label are making a wise choice, despite whether or not the song is a number one hit.

ok, i guess RF was not a good example. but, as has been pointed out, covers have had success on the charts before
i just hope that no one (especially the fans) will say the label made a mistake or whatever if this song doesnt get to reach the top. considering the album's on its 5th single, so who's to say another choice would have achieved that

Don't need a crystal ball to tell you that. Any of the others, you're probably right, who's to say they would get to #1 since they would have been a 5th single? That's not what upsets me though really. I just don't like that they still have so many top notch original songs to chose from, and they go for a cover. Even if this is a #1, people will always associate it with Travis first and foremost. It will likely go down as one of Carrie's least popular singles, because it will just be lost in the shuffle to all her huge original recordings, and their will always be people who say the original is better. It's not like this is going to be an I Will Always Love You scenario for example.

^But technically, FOTF is a cover also. Sorry, just had to throw that out there Honestly, I don't see why it's a big deal that ITYS is a cover. Alan Jackson, for example, has covered many songs during his career and turned them into hits that are still played on radio today. In addition to the two mentioned above; Summertime Blues, Pop A Top, Mercury Blues, and Tall Tall Trees were all covers, and those are some of AJ's most recognizable hits. I don't think being a cover is going to keep this from the top, nor do I think it will keep this from getting recurrent airplay (actually, i think it could be one of the strongest singles from CR in that department).

Most of those weren't classic country hits in their original form, so those still aren't good examples. Having said that, I don't think being a cover is what would hurt "ITYS." If it doesn't get to #1, it will be because it's too traditional. As much as artists and industry folks lament the decline of traditional country, radio rarely plays songs that are traditionally country. "I May Hate Myself In The Morning" won a CMA, but it didn't even make the top 10 at radio. Patty Loveless has barely had hits this decade because she's too traditional.

Not to quibble too much because I agree with your point, but Lee Ann Womack spent three weeks at #10 on the BB charts back in 2005. I do think that it should have done even better than that, though.
